This was a really fun book and definitely one I will be getting to keep.
The images are nice and bright and the story is very easy to follow.
Another great title to add to the collection. Starting as avid fans of the Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and Stick Man my children have expanded their collection to many of Julia's books and they were very pleased to get the chance to see this new story so early.
I have three young children, aged 6, 4 and 2 and they all loved hearing the stories and admiring the artwork and my 6 year old was most excited to read it cover to cover herself.
Heartily recommended to both existing fans of her books and anyone with young children. They will love it.
What a lovely, lovely book. I was a bit nervous as we read the first two pages that we had heard it all before, but I should have trusted the genius of Julia Donaldson more! Such a beautiful tribute to Willow and Holly, and such a fun and colourful book to read with children - all four of mine loved it, ranging from 18mths to 8. The gentle humour, amazing illustrations and familiar rhyming (and characters) make this another triumph.
What can I say - it's Julia Donaldson. Nuff said. You know you'll get a sweet funny story with a easy to read rhyming structure that neither you to your toddler or older child to you will stumble over. There hasn't been a bad book from Ms Donaldson yet, this will be another book to be read again and again.....and again.
I received a digital ARC from Netgalley for review.
What a super book. I loved the rhyming throughout. Another classic with beautiful illustrations. A triumph!
The 'Ladybird' books from Julia Donaldson are new to me. When I come across a new book I tend to ask myself if my grandchildren or my friends' grandchildren would like the book and would I buy it or be more likely to look for it in the library.
I think with this one, although I quite liked it, I would probably look for it in the local library and borrow it. I might feel differently once it is out in paperback.
It's a lovely bright, colourful book telling the story of how the little ladybird helps Monkey Joe, who lives in the zoo with the other animals, and the queen's corgis to outwit the two 'baddies', Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh, who were planning to coerce Monkey Joe into helping them steal the queen's crown. The story is cleverly told in rhyming couplets. There is some repetition with a nice rhythm, almost like a chorus, which younger children tend to like and a happy outcome for the animals. If the cover is going to be as shown on Amazon UK, I like it. It's very eye-catching.
I did struggle a bit initially with downloading it to my tablet but eventually succeeded. The next day I tried to open it to read it to my friend's grandchildren – a boy almost 5 (at nursery), and a girl 7. Again, I couldn't open it and had to mess about, download again and open with a alternative app (my problem, not yours!) Eventually we got it although some of the excitement at reading a new book had waned a little.
The 7 year old likes to read the books by herself, sometimes to her younger brother. Even when the book is aimed at a younger age range, she's usually very good at giving an opinion. She is a good reader. She quite liked this one but I don't think she was wowed. I think the book is more suited to younger children. Her little brother liked looking for the ladybird on every page. We all liked the first two pages especially. There is so much colour and detail and lots to talk about. I think the story is more suited to pre-school children, say 3-5, maybe even younger.
I also tried reading it to my 14 month old granddaughter. Obviously she doesn't quite understand the story but she sat and listened. The colour, rhythm and rhyme is good. My problem was she wanted to touch the pictures and as I was reading on an android tablet things would happen to the screen that aren't supposed to happen!
I would certainly consider buying the series of 'Ladybird' books in paperback.
Brilliant story, great illustrations! The usual high standard of Julia Donaldson. My kids loved this story, the lady bird is favourite as are the corgies. Children love these books for the humour and detail put into them! A big hit in my house!
My 2-year-old daughter and I both love Julia Donaldson books with their familiar rhymes and refrains and this one is no exception. It is very similar to the original What the Ladybird Heard with Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh plotting a burglary. However, like the sequel to Zog, this is actually better than the original as it is a little more complex and there is more at stake for the characters. The only slight negative is that the glittery effect from the books is lacking in the ebook format.
Julia Donaldson never lets a reader down. This preview copy has been read and reread many times already. First person to have it read to was a 20 month old. He loved it - lovely illustrations, simple but detailed, bright and colourful. A 5 year old was next. She enjoyed it too as the pictures and cheerful rhymes appeal to her at the early stages of reading. Her 7 year old brother joined in and then he and their 9 year old brother took turns reading it to the toddler. A real family book. Not one that I would buy for the older children as it would be deemed to be a bit basic for them, but they took a great deal of pleasure from reading it and examining the pictures, pointing out details to the younger ones. A bonus of having younger siblings. Sure to be another great success.
What The Ladybird Heard On Holiday
Julia Donaldson has done it again,
Another fine work from her magic pen.
The Ladybird returns for another rhyming adventure
And Lydia Monks is the superb illustrator.
This time, from the farm, the ladybird has gone
We find her on her holiday in the City of London.
Instead of the farm she meets animals at the zoo,
But other characters also return; in fact, there are two.
They are up to their dastardly tricks again.
Yes, it's Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len.
I loved this book, my daughter did, too
We'll read it again, more times than a few.
It holds it's own against the first two books
Rhymes and story, even the crooks,
It will keep you entertained and amused,
It''s a greatly little book that will be lovingly used.
Enough of my appalling rhyming, it' can't stand against the genius of Julia Donaldson. Suffice to say, this book is exactly as you would expect from the author. My daughter looks forward to purchasing a copy.
I kept this for my six year old granddaughter and she loved it. We kept reading it till she knew it by heart. Julia Donaldson is the best current writer for under sixes and this is another achievement. The use of verse ensures it can be remembered, the story is friendly with the goodies winning and the illustration is excellent. A must for children.
Having read the previous titles I was excited for this book. As lovely as the story was it seemed to lack the same flow of the original what the ladybird heard.
However my children loved the story as much as the others
Unfortunately I wasn't able to download this book. However, as a huge fan of both authors I am sure it will be fantastic - hence the 5 stars.
Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len are back!
As a teacher, I always look forward to read Julia Donaldson's books as they are so engaging. What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday didn't let me down. After reading it myself I knew I had to get the opinions of my Year 2 class. They absolutely loved it. They particularly liked the Ladybird's cunning plan and came up with lots of ways they would have helped her. By the end of the book they were so excited and want a copy of their own!
My 5 year old loved it. She’s at the very early reading stage but still loves her picture books. The illustrations are great. Living in London my daughter was able to recognise so many of the buildings in the book, as I’m sure everyone would. I’m a huge fan of Julia Donaldson and it’s easy to see why she’s such a hit with kids, the rhyme and repetition works so well throughout the story. I’m sure this will be another runaway success for the author and illustrator.
I am a fan of Julia Donaldson and the ladybird series is great. I read it with my 2 year old godson (bit younger than intended audience) and he loved it. The rhyming text allows anyone to be a good storyteller and the illustrations are stunning. You can spot the ladybird on each page and the other animals are colourful and eye catching. Would highly recommend to any parent or anyone buying for young children. It's a great story and there are extre things to talk about on all the pages.
As someone who works in school Julia Donaldson books are a great buy. Fantastic illustrations and stories that keep young readers engrossed. Her books are extremely popular with adults and children alike. Following on from her other Ladybird books this is sure to be another best seller. Lovely book to read to younger children too.
Fabulous fun, my girls loved it as they do all Julia Donaldson books!
Another excellent What The Ladybird Heard book that kept the kids enthralled throughout. William, aged 6, said that he especially liked the bit where the animals were pretending to sleep, and Lois aged 4, said her favourite bit was the whole book!
This is yet another great book from Julie Donaldson. The kids loved all the wonderful and colourful illustrations throughout this book, and true to Donaldson's style the rhyme was there as well a great tale to be told.
We haven't read the previous What the Ladybird Heard book, but I know we will for sure as my daughter just loved the little ladybird and loved looking for her on every page.
Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to review.
