Loved this book. Boy did I not expect that. There was something about the mother i didn't like mind you.
I received an advanced copy of this via Netgalley.
Read it in 3 days which for a mum of 5 is pretty good going! Drew me in straight away and the storyline is very very good. Ambers character is written well as is Judi's, and he ending was very unexpected. Highly recommend!
Having loved Kim Slater' s two previous novels I was really looking forward to reading Liar. Unfortunately I was really disappointed with it. Although there are a couple of unexpected twists I couldn't like any of the characters and found the storyline frustrating.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book as an arc. This was a real rollercoaster read with plenty of twists and turns. I felt so sorry for Judi when her widowed son Ben hooked up with a new girlfriend two years after the death of his wife. After the death of his wife, Ben has been dependent on Judi to help him raise his two sons Noah and Josh, and now new girlfriend Amber is on the scene, Judi doesn't seem to be needed anymore. Judi begins to think Amber is actually a danger to her grandsons, so she begins to investigate her past and finds out there are some skeletons buried.
This is a brilliant psychological thriller. There are quite a few OMG moments that you definitely won't see coming!
A quick read, with a twist at the end. Most of the book was buildup, with not a whole lot of incidents happening, but it gives you different ideas as to what the ending will be like. I will say, that what I thought, and what did happen, were totally different.
An enjoyable book!
Psychological thriller that exceeds expectations. Your brain doesn't know who to root for, the back and forth kept me in suspense even as the story played out to the bitter end. While I was able to discern some truth during the story, there was always something small that shook my beliefs and made me question those truths. Very much a page turner with the POV being between the two women in the story. Never had a problem figuring out was 'talking'. Great read and would recommend if you are a fan of mind game books.
Thanks to Netgalley for a review copy provided free for my honest review.
This is my first book by this author and it will not be my last.
Once I started I couldn’t put it down, it is a gripping psychological thriller.
Ben is a single dad and doing his best to raise his children alone that is until he meets Amber. and things happen pretty quick between them everyone thinks they are perfect together apart from Ben’s mother Judi who doesn’t like Amber from the first time meeting her there is just something that don’t sit right with her. Ben and his father really can’t understand why Judi doesn’t like Amber.
It is mostly told in Judi POV but we do get the odd Chapter from other characters as well.
Loved the characters in this book the book is well written and is full of twists and turns I really didn’t see coming. Things are never what they seem.
I really can’t wait to read more from this author.
"Liar" by K L Slater is a fantastic psychological thriller. I absolutely loved it. I literally could not put it down and spent a very pleasurable weekend reading it in the sunny garden. The chapters are short, yet incredibly informative. The author writes in a very clear and smooth voice. There are two main characters who have alternating chapters, you're not quite certain who to side with until the final pages....
A fantastic read which I am recommending to all my book loving friends, I look forward to reading her previous two books and the many more she writes.
Many Thanks to the author - K L Slater and Kim Nash at Bookoutre via Net Galley for granting me a copy of this superb book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Since the death of his wife two years ago Ben has been doing his best to raise his two young sons.Life isn't easy but with the help of his devoted mother Judi, they manage.
Then Ben meets Amber, everyone thinks that Amber is perfect for Ben but Judi isn't so sure - there is something about Amber that doesn't add up.
The further Judi delves into Ambers personal life, the closer she gets to shocking secrets that could change everything.
This thought provoking thriller is mainly told from Judi`s point of view but occasionally there where also chapters that where voiced by Amber. Both women where obviously deeply flawed mentally and it was fun to witness their confrontations and the cat and mouse game they played as they tried to outwit each other.Using the menopause as a plot device was a ingenious way of casting doubt on Judi`s version of events and making the reader think that it was all in her head. All the characters in this entertaining story where realistic and believable but not very likeable apart from Ben`s young boys Noah and Josh and another character called Fiona Binder.I would have liked to have read some chapters that where voiced from Ben`s perspective,it would have been interesting to know his thoughts on the two women who's thumb prints where firmly stamped on his head.
Although I wasnt drawn into the story like I was whilst I was reading Blink I did enjoy this book. There was a couple of unexpected twists and some of the issues raised would probably result in some very interesting discussions if this book was read by a book group.
Brilliant! The author has done it again! From the thrilling beginning to the shock ending, this is a pacy, twisted, absolutely unpredictable but immensely believable, tense and scary roller-coaster of a read. Loved, loved, loved! I would highly recommend this to everyone.
I got really frustrated with the characters of Amber and Judi, they both needed some help with their issues! Having said that, this was a good psychological thriller. It never really gripped me but it was well written and fast paced with plenty twists to keep you interested. Thank you Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads.
Judi is a loving mum to Ben, grandmother to his sons Noah and Josh. She takes pride in supporting her family throught what has been an unbearably difficult time, since Ben's wife died two years previously, doing all she can to help the young family cope with this tragedy.
Then along comes Amber: Pretty, outspoken and totally perfect in Ben's eyes.
But as things progress we learn things are not all they seem. Is Judi just jealous of Amber and of being replaced as the new woman in her family's life or is there more to Amber than meets the eye?
Told almost entirely through Judi and Amber's points of view, the story unravels at a steady pace leaving the reader intrigued and eager to get to the bottom of this psychological thriller. I was totally gripped by Liar reading it in one day and have nothing but praise for the author K.L. Slater. I would thoroughly recommend this book to fans of the genre and guarantee you will not be disappointed.
In this twisted tale, a mother and a girlfriend fight over the same man. We know from the first chapter, one of the women has been viciously attacked by someone, we just don’t know who is the victim and who is the perpetrator. Ben has been raising his children alone since the death of his wife, along with the very generous support of his mother. then he meets Amber and begins to believe she could be the one to help heal his heart and his family. But Amber and Ben’s mother Judi, hate each other at first sight and it becomes a battle (to the death) to see which one of them will claim Ben for their own. Judi’s over protective mothering was super creepy, and Amber’s insidious threats scary. Readers will hear from both women as the perspective changes with each chapter. It’s a toss-up as to which woman is more deranged and the ending will come as a big surprise
Wow this starts at a breakneck pace and doesn't let up, the story focuses around Judi a middle aged woman going through the menopause and stuck in a long and loveless marriage, the only thing that keeps her focused and happy is helping her widower son Ben and her grandchildren, but then Ben meets Amber a young woman, to good to be true and who quickly starts being more important in everyone's eyes apart from Judi who thinks shes up to something, but everyone she tells thinks shes over reacting, but is she? This book will strike a note with any woman meeting her boyfriends parents for the first time and what if one or both of you are hiding your true selves. A brilliant psychological read.
This is the authors third book I have read now and I have to say I am getting to be quite the fan. I know as soon as I pick up one of her books that I am guaranteed a good read and Liar was certainly no different.
The story starts off with a shocking start and then goes back to where it all started off and the events that lead back up to the present day. It flicks between Amber who is Ben’s new partner and Judi, Ben’s mum.
As a parent I do think it’s hard thinking that anyone is good enough for your children. Judi was lucky that she loved Ben’s first wife who sadly lost her life to cancer and is very much shocked and scared when Ben informs his parents that he has met someone else.
Without a doubt I could relate to Judi. She has been a big part of Ben’s as well as her grand children’s lives for the last two years. When Amber comes into their lives, it’s obvious that she wants Judi cut out of their lives.
Amber I took an instant dislike to straight away. It is obvious she is up to something but I didn’t know why. She seems hell bent on making things as difficult for Judi as possible and delights at driving a wedge between mother and son.
Liar is one very twisted story where I was certain I knew the outcome. The author weaves a story with twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and made me question everything. No way did I ever envision the ending to this book which I loved it when an author takes me by surprise. I would have personally loved some sort of epilogue as it ended slightly abruptly for me and left me wondering a few things but other than that I totally loved it.
Thank goodness this one is short, because it's very, very hard to put down. As the official description of "psychological thriller" suggests, it messed with my head - mostly as I tried to figure out what was really going on in the minds of the two primary characters, both of whom clearly are in need of some serious psychiatric help.
One of those characters, Judi, is mother to Ben and grandmother to his two young sons. Another of Judi's sons, David, was killed years ago, but she maintains his bedroom almost as a shrine in the home she shares with her husband. Especially since her relationship with her husband has deteriorated over time, helping Ben with his sons provides her with much-needed joy and comfort - and she'll do absolutely anything to keep them all close. A couple of years earlier, Ben's wife (and mother of the grandsons) died, leaving Ben to raise them on his own. A dedicated teacher, Ben is lonely; but focusing on his work and his sons (and endless help from his mother), he's coping as best he can.
But suddenly, Ben meets Amber - and everything changes. As their whirlwind romance begins, Ben is happy once again; his mother Judi, not so much. As Amber worms her way into Ben's life - taking over "responsibilities" Judi believes are now and always will be hers and threatening her treasured family dynamic - the tension builds. Amber, Judi is certain, is up to no good; and she sets out to find out exactly why that is (and in the process discredit Amber in Ben's rose-colored eyes). That becomes harder as Judi encounters resistance from Ben and her husband, both of whom think she's being overly critical. Judi herself even has a few doubts about her feelings, given that she's also dealing with the physical symptoms of menopause (as an aside, that was a little puzzling to me since Judi is 59 - way beyond the average age of 51. Certainly, it can begin much later, but it's far less common). At any rate, Judi goes to great lengths to keep that change a secret from the men in her life - I suppose because she thinks they'll take her even less seriously (as if that were possible).
Constantly facing opposition from them but convinced Amber is up to no good, Judi begins to dig deeper - and what she learns only bolsters her belief and distrust of Ben's about-to-be second wife. As all that unfolds, readers are treated to snippets of what Amber really is thinking as chapters shift from her perspective to Judi's. The whole thing comes to an exciting climax as dark secrets from the past of both women are revealed.
My conclusion? Pretty creepy - and thus destined to be a hit. Many thanks to the publisher (via NetGalley) for the opportunity to read an advance review copy.
A superb read for on holiday (which I am) when you can sit round the pool & just read and read without much distraction. It had me hooked from the start & had me guessing the outcome even though the ending is told in the first chapter.
Maybe if I had to be picky I would say just too many tragedies in all the characters' lives but just go with it & it really doesn't matter.
Despite my misgivings about the psychological thriller genre lately, I jumped on the chance to read an advanced copy of Liar because I had enjoyed KL Slater's previous book and just assumed, quite rightly, that I would like this one too.
Judy's life revolves around her son, Ben, and her grandsons. But all this changes when Ben meets Amber. Judy instantly dislikes her son's new girlfriend and the feeling seems to be mutual. But why?
Judy is incredibly domineering. Used to being the only woman in her son's life, she finds it tough to relinquish some of the responsibilities she's been dealing with since Ben's wife passed away. Amber, however, has quite the controlling vibe as well so it's no wonder they clash. All I could think was how lucky I am with my mothers-in-law. (Plural, yes. I have two. Send wine.)
This story starts with the end. No, really. I actually checked my kindle because I thought it had accidentally put me at the end when I hadn't even started reading yet. Unfortunately for me, I figured out the end at the beginning right away. (Not the end at the end. Get it?) And while there's tension and some surprises and twists as you would expect, most of it seemed a bit too predictable to me. However, the author can spin one heck of a tale and even after having figured a lot of it out, it still held my attention throughout and there may have been a moment when I uttered a surprised "oh!".
Another enjoyable read by KL Slater and I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.
Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my advanced copy, which I chose to review.
I have been looking forward to another of K.L. Slater's psychological thrillers ever since I finished Blink, and this one has definitely turned out to be another masterpiece. Fast-paced, well written and enjoyable prose, unreliable characters, many many plot twists, an explosive ending... Liar has simply the full psychological thriller package! I've read stories about the mother-in-law-daugher-in-law and stepmother relationship before, but I think this one might just be the best one yet. Especially the first one is portrayed brilliantly in this newest story and both Amber and Judi's character are both realistic, well developed and highly unreliable. This 'unreliable narrator' technique doesn't always work in stories, but was very well executed in Liar and resulted in some very shocking plot twists. There is no way the explosive ending will not completely shock and surprise you! Secrets, plot twists, unreliable characters, suspense... This story will have you in its claws from the very first page and won't let you go until the very end! If you like the genre, add this to your wishlist. You'll be in for a treat.
