"Checkmate for China" eBook was published in 2017 (original paper edition published in 1969) and was written by Geoffrey Osborne. Mr. Osborne published six novels.
I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence. The story is set in the midst of the Cold War. The primary characters are James Dingle and Glyn Jones, both British secret agents.
Commercial passenger aircraft have disappeared with no trace. On board have been leading space scientists from both the UK and Russia. Dingle and Jones are given the mission to determine who is behind the abductions and find the missing scientists. Jones, along with Russian agents, pose as space scientists, but they too disappear. Dingle follows a lead to China, but feels like he is immediately being watched.
I thought that this was an interesting 4.5 hour read for this 208 page Spy Thriller. It is a little aged, but still not a bad story. I liked the characters. They closely follow the 'James Bond' mold. I am not a fan of the cover art. I don't think is has anything to do with the story. I give this novel a 3.8 (rounded up to a 4) out of 5.
