I was really looking forward to this book. The book is based on Petula and her family. I wish I could say I enjoyed this book which was kind of long, but I felt that it left a little to be desired. Petula is very arrogant and just not a likable character. It was very hard for me to sympathize with this character. There is one character that I felt for and that was Mingus. The format of the book is written with tidbits from the past which brings us to the present and will make things a bit clearer. But, this still did not save this book for me. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review.
Really, really did not enjoy at all. Very long book, especially long because Petula, the main heroine, was extremely unpleasant. I didn't like her at all and found very little good in her. As I read the book I just couldn't get past it. It's difficult to read a book when the main character is so odious and domineering. I had no emotional attachment to any of the characters, with the possible exception of Mingus.
This is the strangest book I could not finish. The writing is witty and often make me laugh with clever tautologies and aphorisms. However, I often felt like I had lost my place because I was reading something I had already read, but I had not accidentally hit the back page button, the person was just ranting and repeating himself or herself. I am a firm believer in SHOW, DON'T TELL, but not when what you're showing is someone will perorate endlessly on the same grievance. We can get that after the first paragraph...but pages of ranting...no thanks.
So yes, the writer is funny, witty, but the book is frustrating and bored me. I wanted it to move along and it just would not. Sorry.
