This was not the first book I’ve read by Tom Bale, and it won’t be my last, however this was not my favorite work by him. I really had a hard time connecting with Jen as a character, which is likely because she made so many choices that I had a hard time believing. Why would you enter someone else’s house while they aren’t there, just to leave a note?! That seems crazy to me! Why not come back later, or go to your OWN home to get paper to leave the note? There were so many other options that I feel like a logical person would have chosen before resorting to entering someone else’s house without permission.
Along the same lines, I struggled to suspend my disbelief throughout much of the story. As more and more is uncovered about what’s really happening, I found myself thinking that it seemed too far fetched and unlikely, not only that the events would happen in the first place, but that each piece of the puzzle would line up exactly right in order to make it possible.
The last issue I had was the number of characters. There seemed to be a rotating door of characters, and I had a hard time keeping them all straight at times and remembering how they were each connected to Jen.
Overall, this one wasn’t a winner for me, but it won’t turn me off to Tom Bale’s future works. Thank you to Netgalley, Tom Bale, and Bookouture for a copy of the book. It was my pleasure to provide an honest review.
I loved that this book was a copy cookie cutter version as most thrillers are right now. This book was so creepy and chilling and I cant say enough good things about it. This book was a book that made me loose sleep and trust me I like my sleep. Highly recommend.
This review is written with thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my copy of Each Little Lie.
Jen Cornish is a single mum, locked in a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband over her seven year old son, Charlie. When she is arrested for a crime she didn't commit, she realises someone is setting her up for a very big fall, and they are not afraid to involve her son. Who can Jen trust as she tries to clear her name before her world comes crashing down around her?
I have read and reviewed Bale's previous two novels, See How They Run and All Fall Down and been impressed with the way that he built tension: the danger was immediate and the reader was teetering on the edge of their seat for most of the novel. In Each Little Lie, the tension and danger creeps up on the reader, but is no less palpable. From the moment Jen is arrested, I wanted to know who was framing her and how they had managed to create such a convincing argument, and these questions kept me reading until the very end.
Each Little Lie has a very intelligent plot, which is built on, as the title suggests, a series of intricate lies. I did not find any of the characters particularly likeable, except for Jen and her friend, Anna, and as such, it was difficult for me to know who Jen should trust. As Jen is running over these questions in her mind, the reader is also doing the same. This made it easier for me to relate to Jen, and therefore makes her plight very compelling.
Although the ending of Each Little Lie is very tense, and I was keen to know how the plot would be resolved, I found the epilogue slightly anticlimactic, giving the novel a rather abrupt ending. Whilst this doesn't spoil the novel for me, it does mean that the ending had less impact than I would have liked.
Each little lie isn't the first book I've read by Tom Bale and won't be the last, I don't think this is as good as his last but is definitely a good read.
The main character is Jen at first I didn't warm to her but by halfway I was fighting with her. The book is not fast paced but isn't slow either, apart from the part at the beginning when Jen finds the keys I think the rest is a believable tale.
The outline of the story is Jen was married to Freddie but is getting divorced and has her son Charlie to consider, Jen is arrested by the police for something she says she didn't do and from here her life gets very strange. I could go into it a lot more but I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone as there are a lot of twists and turns along the way.
I would like to thank netgalley and bookouture for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
What a book. This will not be my last book I will read of his. This story shows how someone life can spiral in a different direct by doing a small good deed.
In each little lie; by Tom Bale. We meet single mum Jen who is mum to an 7 year old boy called Charlie. Jen is going through a horrible divorce from her husband called Freddie.
Whilst walking to work Jen notices that her neighbour has drop something outside his front door. Doing the right thing Jen picks them up and is unable to get the attention of the owner of the keys as the car drives off he is in. Not wanting to leave the keys with a neighbour, as Jen needs to get to work so she looks in her bag for a piece of paper and a pen. She did not have one. Quick thinking Jen decided to enter the house to find one.
Jen leaves a note explaining to her neighbour she has his keys and contact me on this number and sticks the note to her neighbour’s front door.
This is where the roller coaster ride changes Jen’s life.
This is an amazing psychological thriller and a very powerful read. This book will grip you from the first page and will leave you guessing till the end few chapters. I genuinely loved this book, I couldn't get enough of it…….
Thank you to Bookouture. NetGalley and Tom Bale for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review

I have always been impressed with Tom vale and how well he tells stories. It is amazing to see a person able to convey many meanings and still keep a certain mystery about the book.
I enjoyed All Fall Down and this book was no disappointment. It had me gripped and completely baffled in places. Jen is arrested with compelling evidence her although in all that matters is innocent. She was either plucky or plain stupid; I could quite decide. I admired her attempt to discover the truth but she made me cower a few things she did. Jen lives as single mother with her son Charlie. Freddie is her estranged selfish, playboy husband. He seem a bit of a weak sop to me but having being reared by Gerard, the wealthy, bullying, arrogant father that comes as little surprise. He believes he can make anyone submit to his will. A good insight into his type. The plot was tight and unsettling and full of disconnected red herrings. It is really one of the most scary things to happen - accused of a crime you didn't commit as well as a child going missing and she stayed sane. Interesting characters - A good solid nerve-wracking ending. Thank you for letting me read it.
I had high expectations of Each Little Lie having already read and loved the authors previous books. Infact I put aside the book I was halfway through to get stuck in the minute it appeared on my Kindle.
Each Little Lie gets off to a cracking start! We meet Jen, who sets out to do a good deed, but it turns into an absolute nightmare which threatens to tear her world apart as she is arrested and accused of a crime that soon escalates into even more of a hideous situation.
I can’t really say too much more about the plot without giving it away and I really don’t want to spoil it for anyone. But what I can mention is the cast of characters. Oh boy, they are good!!! Jen is a fabulously vulnerable character who whilst I thought I had a grasp of who she was and what she was capable off, I found myself questioning whether she was being falsely accused, or if infact she was guilty of the accusations levelled at her. But the stars of the show for me are a couple of really mean and creepy characters that emerge within the storyline. They really made my skin crawl and my blood boil. One of my favourite things about Tom’s work is his talent at developing characters who get under your skin. This book once again puts us in the midst of some of the vilest!
I have to be brutally honest and say that unlike his previous work I didn’t find Each Little Lie quite as enticing and as gripping as others. There was nothing wrong with the book, but I managed to suss out what had happened quite early on and I guess that just wained my interest a bit. However, I have spoken to others, and read reviews from readers who have absolutely loved the book, so please don’t let me put you off!
Life for jen quickly unravels when she tries to do a good deed for someone. Suddenly she is plunged into uncertainty could she possibly have done the things she has been accused of. Why would someone set out to deliberately ruin her. A very engaging story with some twists and turns along the way and with some strong characters
I was really looking forward to reading Tom Bale's "Each Little Lie". Thank you so much to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for not making me wait until the official publication date!
In this book, once again, we are introduced to a character that might as well be any of us. It rings especially true for me since I'm a mum of a little boy, just like the main character - Jen. It still gives me goosebumps just to think of how easy it may be to get involved in a truly dramatic situation with no apparent way out. I honestly admire Jen and Tom Bale's other characters for their strength and perseverance.
This particular novel kept me at the edge of my seat and kept me guessing until the very end. What an amazing, heart-stopping experience that was!
Maybe I should stop reading books that are described as having a "heart-stopping twist," because I'm not sure which revelation the cover copy is describing. There are twists here, some of them unexpected, but none was that dramatic. Jen Cornish is a single mom who does "an impulsive good deed" to help a neighbor...and that's where she lost me. What she saw as a helpful act, I saw as something else. Watching her fall down a rabbit hole of consequences was intriguing, but not nearly as suspenseful as the cover copy promises.
I really enjoyed See How They Run and loved All Fall Down and I was a bit disappointed that this book didn't have the same fast-paced, catch your breath intensity of those two. This book felt very slow and it did not help that I really could have cared less about any of the characters. I had a tough time getting through this one.
I have been extremely slack with my reading for the last few months and have a massive TBR pile, I am finding it hard to get out of bed let alone read a book. Whilst browsing Twitter not so long ago I came across a post that Tom Bale was publishing a new book so straight away this jumped to the top of my TBR Pile.
Tom Bale is one of my favourite writers, his books are consistently good and I really do enjoy them, in fact See How They Run is amongst one of my favourite books I have read. The writing instils in you the feelings the characters are going through on the page. I am constantly going through an emotional roller coaster of Panic, Fear and Relief.
Each Little Lie is no different. Yet again Tom Bale takes a "normal" everyday person and puts them into a brilliant adrenaline packed adventure.
As with all my reviews I wont go into details (thats what the blurb is for) of the story through fear of spoilers and laziness but this is a story full of characters of dubious nature that think they can do whatever they like regardless of the law to people who they deem beneath them, and get away with it. Bit like the Conservatives. The protagonist of the story is Jen Cornish who is a normal everyday person, a single person who lives for her son. She does one kind thing for a neighbour and her whole world changes
Great book, highly recommended.
I believe that Each Little Lie is my first book by author Tom Bale, but it won’t be my last. The book begins with Jen Cornish hurrying to work. As she is on her way, she notices a man rushing out to his car. He drops something and she hurries over to get it. It’s his keys. She runs to the end of the street, but he is already gone. Wanting to leave him a note, she finds that she has paper, but nothing to write with. Since she is already late to work, her options are limited, and she quietly lets herself into his house to borrow a pen.
With that good samaritan act, Jen finds her life turned upside down. She is arrested and finds the evidence stacking up against her. It seems as if someone is framing her, but who? Could it be her soon to be ex husband, Freddie? Would he do something like this to try and get custody of their son, Charlie?
This is a very solid mystery, with plenty of twists and turns and surprises. My only problem was with the characters. They all seemed a little “too.” Too kind, too weak, too ruthless, too immature. It’s like each character had one trait and they had that trait to the max. So much that at times it felt unbelievable. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying the mystery.
I received an ARC of the book.
Each Little Lie by Tom Bale.
Each Little Lie by Tom Bale is a twisty story of lies and deception. Jen is just an ordinary single mom, when suddenly extraordinary things begin happening to her.
One day, Jen sees a man drop his keys in the grass just before his ride picks him up. Jen grabs the keys and flags the car down, but no avail... it was gone. And now she is left with the conundrum of what to do with the keys and how to safely get them back to the owner.
The innocent, though not the brightest, decision she makes leads her life toward a path she never thought she'd walk.
Each Little Lie was my first book by Tom Bale. What a great read. There is one hell of a screwed up family in this book! So if you like messed up families, here's another to add to your TBR pile.
Jen, oh Jen.
It is so surreal to me that one day you can be enjoying your life, and the next it falls apart. I suppose that is the basis of many psychological thrillers, however, it was very overt in Each Little Lie. Jen thought she was doing a good deed and bam... all heck breaks loose.
At first, I wasn't fond of Jen. I thought the way she chose to deal with the lost keys wasn't the brightest idea. I didn't realize in the beginning how bad things were going to get. So when the first consequence came, I rolled my eyes and thought, "Told you so."
But then things spiraled down a black hole of badness and I found myself rooting for her. Whew.
Jen had the weight of so much on her shoulders. With stress to the guilds, Jen's fear, anxiety, and sadness ran the whole gamut of what anyone would feel. But she persevered and did everything she needed to do. I was very proud of her character.
Each Little Lie gets 4 brightly glowing stars from me.
Thank you bookouture, netgalley, and Tom Bale for an advanced copy of your book. My review is honest and unbiased.
Oh, this was fun!
Don't get me wrong...the main character - eesh! You know those movies where the main girl just doesn't have a brain in her head and makes the worst possible decisions every last time? Meet Jen! However, she's also decent, kind, moral and loves her son to pieces. So despite her extreme lack of anything approaching intelligence, I found myself liking her.
And this book is intense. Like, edge of your seat intense! There are some scenes where you just know something is about to go terribly wrong and you simply can't look away.
Seriously, this is your perfect beach or train read. Just don't be surprised if you don't want to stop reading when you have to do other things (like work).
This is a boring book. I found myself falling asleep on numerous occasions while reading this. Not my type of book as I want something with a little more action to keep me entertained.
Not as up there as my previous reads of Tom's but still a great book from an author who , in my opinion , is somewhat underrated! Fantastic storyline and plot with great characters , my only criticism is that , for me , it was just a little long winded . 3.5 stars with my thanks to netgalley and bookature for my arc
This is the third book by Tom Bale that I've read so far and whilst not as fast paced as the others it was still a very good read.
Each Little Lie is another dark, gripping and mysterious tale, extremely well written with twists and turns all the way through.
The characterisations were compelling and I really did like Jen despite her flaws. Tom Bale is very adept at building up tension within his books, he's also a master at creating a great story from some fairly implausible circumstances.
I really enjoyed the book and will look forward to another read from this author.
Thank you!
I absolutely love the premise for this book, the idea that one small act can have life alternating consequences is both fascinating and terrifying! Jen is an average woman trying to do her best by her son Charlie and when she tries to do something kind for a stranger one day, she sets of a devastating chain of events. I warmed to her straightaway, she was very relatable even if sometimes the choices she made made me want to scream at her. But that’s the thing, you never truly know how you will react to certain situations unless you’re in the situation yourself, so I couldn’t judge her. That all sounds vague, but when you’re reading a Bale book it really is best if you don’t know too much about the plot.
Bale has an effortless writing style that always hooks me instantly, he really draws the reader in and doesn’t let go until the end. Each Little Lie wasn’t quite as fast paced as his previous books but it was still a thrilling read. The ending was action packed and gave me that adrenaline rush that I’ve come to expect from his books and there was the sense of something sinister lurking under the surface throughout. This is a book full of manipulation, deceit, betrayals and also had that fantastic underlying sense of paranoia, especially as Jen started to unravel at the seams, much as her entire life did. Fans of the author will not be disappointed, this was an engrossing read full of twists and turns.
