I was excited to get my hands on this new book by Claire Douglas called Last Seen Alive. From page one, I was engrossed in this tense thriller. Libby Hall and her husband, Jamie agreed to a house swap with a couple they had never met. It seemed like a perfect break for the couple after a tense few months and whilst in the beginning it seemed like the right decision, after a very short time, the house of their dreams became a house of horror and fear. I didn´t know who was to be trusted and I felt concerned for the safety of the heroine - Libby Hall.
After a few tense chapters, the action shifted to Jamie and Libby´s own apartment where they appeared to be harassed by an unknown person. In a stunning Hitchcock-like twist, the action turns on itself in the second half of the novel and we begin to learn more of the back-story of Libby Hall. I found it incredibly difficult to put down this book, reading it at breakfast, and almost missing work so that I could read more into the novel.
However, sadly towards the end of the book, the action slows down. I felt like the book had a lot of potential but the many twists and turns led to a somewhat lack-lustre ending.
A strange, twisty turny page mover, a great read about stolen identity and the consequences.
Oh my goodness what a Brilliant, un-putdownable read Last Seen Alive was, such a creepy, something bad is going to happen type of read that has you utterly gripped!!
This book held my attention from the start but increased in tension from chapter to chapter, then takes twists and turns the reader doesn't seem coming. I thought I knew where this book was going - how wrong can you be. Just when you think you e got it all Sussex comes the denouements. Great read. Highly recommended.
I don't think I've ever felt as exhausted yet happy after a novel in a long while. This is a thriller for sure and a weird, twisty one that will really stay with you. A house swap which goes wrong? That's very clever right there as I've not read a thriller with this premise and in the Air BnB world, it really hit home.
There is so little I can say without giving anything away and believe me, you will want to discover it for yourself. I read it in two sittings - I had to - I read up to the part where they flash back to Thailand and...well I had to read the rest in one go. There is so much to this novel, the layers of lies and deceit are delicious and the characters with so many hidden secrets...Last Seen Alive will shock and surprise. If you're standing or sitting on a rug when you read this beware...it will fly out from underneath you.
The gothic, isolated house in Cornwall was chillingly brilliant and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. The beach in Thailand - the waves of dread and foreboding crashed loudly in my ears... a clever writer indeed. A pulsating plot indeed!
(short review on GR now and the rest later)
I loved Sisters and Local Girl Missing so I was delighted to read Claire Douglas' latest book, Last Seen Alive. This is the story of Libby and Beth and the secrets Libby keeps from her husband, Jamie.
When newly married Libby and Jamie are offered a house swap in Devon things don''t appear to be what they seem. Libby suffers from panic attacks as a result of guilt from her past life of which Jamie knows nothing. When they return to their flat in London a dead body is discovered in their garden and Libby feels sure that she is being watched. As a result enormous pressure is put on Libby and Jamie's marriage and she feels that her carefully put together life is falling apart.
The story is told from both Libby and Beth's points of view and I was confused at first when it changed from Libby's to Beth's but the writing is so assured that things became clearer very quickly. I am sure that fans of Claire Douglas' previous novels will not be disappointed and Last Seen Alive will be equally successful. Many thanks to NetGalley and PenguinUK/RandomHouse for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I really enjoyed this book. It had plenty of twists that kept me gripped all the way through. The only downside for me was that I felt the ending was rushed but it wouldn't put me off recommending this book. If thrillers are your thing then this book is for you!
Fantastic book with lots of twists and turns. I really enjoyed this book as it kept me intrigued throughout trying to work out what was happening. An unexpected ending which tied up the whole story. Definitely a book to read.
After receiving a leaflet through their door and needing some time to themselves after a traumatic event Libby and Jamie Hall jump at the chance to swap their tiny city flat for a beautiful house by the sea.But as soon as they arrive at the Hideaway Libby starts to get jittery and becomes convinced that someone is watching them. After their dog Ziggy digs up an unnerving object they decide to return home to Bath.
But they are sadly mistaken in thinking that they could pick up their lives so easily.Because it seems this isn't just a casual house swap. This is something far more sinister.
This gripping, intense thriller is split into three parts. The first part covers events that happen at the beautiful Hideaway on the cliffs of Cornwall. The second part covers when Libby met Karen Fisher while they were both backpacking across Thailand. The third part covers what happened after Libby and Jamie returned home after the house swap
Most of the story is voiced from Libby`s point of view but later in the book the chapters start to alternate between Libby and another woman called Beth. All of the characters in this twisted tale are complex and well developed but I didn't find any of them very likeable apart from Ziggy the dog and Libby and Jamie's neighbour Evelyn.
It's a fast paced, roller coaster that has all the elements that you want a thriller to contain, danger, plenty of twists, lies, secrets and manipulation.Although the chapters are quite long there is just enough description to set the scene and no parts of the story come across as padding. It's a gripping page turner that had me hooked from the shocking prologue right to the unexpected epilogue.I enjoyed this book just as much as I did The Sisters and Local Girl Missing.Claire Douglas writes well written, engrossing thrillers and unfortunately now I have to endure the long wait for her next book.
