I’ve read a couple of the Lumberjanes graphic novels before. They’re so cute! So I had to get the middle grade novel when I heard it was coming out.

In this new story, the scouts find unicorns, not too surprising to fans of the series. What is surprising is that unicorns smell really, really bad (who knew!). They also find a mysterious foggy mountain. Let the adventures begin!

Since I haven’t read all of the graphic novels, I liked the way that there was a lot of background given on the characters and the creatures they have met in the woods before, such as Bearwoman. There are also great illustrations too, which are also helpful since I tend to get the characters mixed up sometimes.

Mariko Tamaki was a great choice to write this book. She’s so talented and she captured the Lumberjanes atmosphere and tone wonderfully in this story. I hope she continues to write the series.

This is the perfect middle grade novel for fans of the series and new readers!

FRIENDSHIP TO THE MAX!

Unfortunately I was unable to finish 'Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power." The Lumberjanes graphic novels fly off the shelf at my library and I was really intrigued to hear about this book. Maybe my expectations were too high but I found it to be dull and confusing. The story read more like the 2nd or 3rd book in a series, not the first. Some children will be able to go alone with the story but others will find it confusing.

I've been a huge fan of the graphic novel series Lumberjanes so when I heard that there was an upcoming prose novel, I knew I'd have to read it. I'm not disappointed at all with this novel and I think it's utterly perfect.

This prose novel focuses on our favourite Lumberjanes, April, Mal, Molly, Jo and Ripley, are off on another adventure! This time, they're both looking to find unicorns and climb an undiscovered mountain. If you're looking for a prose novel to continue your love of the series, you definitely won't be disappointed with this.

I also think the novel does have appeal to new readers, as it'll definitely introduce you to the world of Lumberjanes if you've been looking to read the graphic novels. Overall, I highly recommend this novel and I can't wait to read the sequel.

So I went into this book a little apprehensive. I hadn’t enjoyed the last lumberjane volume that much that I read and was worried I was tired of this series. BUT THIS BOOK BROUGHT IT ALL BACK TOGETHER AGAIN. It was SOO GOOD. It was honestly better than any regular comic volume I’ve read in this series. It made you love the characters even more which is so lovely. It’s just so much fun, the whole time. It’s honestly hard for me to get excited and wrapped up in action sometimes, but this really had me drawn in.

Basically this book is a novel story of the lumberjanes!

It has all the fun, great things about the lumberjanes and then some. It was more fleshed out, which it obviously should be cause it’s not a graphic novel. The storyline was cute and fun and I LOVED EVERY SECOND. I really had thought about giving up on this series, but I’m definitely continuing! THAT CLIFFHANGER?! Ugh I need more stat. If you’ve read lumberjanes and enjoyed it, I can’t recommend this enough!

The girls are back for more adventures. And of course, with the striking illustrations, this graphic novel is sure to be a standing order for public libraries. They are always a hut with our patrons!

I am a hardcore fan of hardcore ladytypes. Lumberjanes to the max! But this book was hard to read. The story idea is good. The characters are true to their origins. But it's so poorly edited. It's not clear who the audience is. The tone is very condescending to kids. You don't have to define every big word in its own sentence. Look to Lemony Snickett for how to incorporate great vocabulary words without being condescending. I think the audience should be a little older than it is targeted or should at least not offend the older audience. I work with middle schoolers who LOVE the Lumberjanes but they are not going to like this book.

As a fan of the comics I was delighted to see that a novel version of some of my favorite, fun characters was happening. I love that you get more of the Lumberjanes. While I do think that someone whose never read the comics before might be a little stumped when starting the novel I feel they'll get a hang of it fairly quickly. The story is fairly fast paced and constantly moving, I love the references to stuff in the comics while still expanding outside of it. The ending indicates another story to come and I can't wait. This is one of my favorite series and I love recommending it to young readers getting into comics and I'm super excited for the chance to also suggest the novel to go along with it.

A fun story. It was nice to get a more in depth look at the interior lives of all the Lumberjanes characters.

Lumberjanes make the transition to novel form easily. In this story t Girls run into a herd of Unicorns that aren't 100 percent what you would expect them to be. They also see a mysterious mountain that April becomes obsessed to climb.

This story has lots of fun moments and teachable lessons. A really fun read.

I love the Lumberjanes, their friendships, their propensity for exploring, and the tongue-in-cheek stories. This chapter book continues all of those properties created in the graphic novels. And I might have liked this book even just a teeny bit more because we got more story in this book. We've got the adventure (climbing the highest mountain; one that didn't seem to have been there before), the supernatural (the Cloud People), and the humor (the unicorns smell bad, really, really bad.)
Definitely worth reading.

I'm so thrilled that Lumberjanes is going to start offering more stories for Hardcore Lady Types! I especially appreciate that readers can jump right in without having read the comics, although already knowing the campers made my enjoyment even greater. I can't wait to get this title in and start recommending it!

I am a huge fan of the Lumberjanes graphic novels, and it is nice to see the series branch out into different formats. The main elements of the series (adventure, friendship, acceptance kindness, respect loyalty and thirst for knowledge) are present, but I felt myself wishing that I were reading the graphic novels instead.

This book is cute, and tries to be fair and devote equal time to all of the stellar Lumberjanes stars, but it lacked a bit of the smart, offbeat flavour that I have come to expect from the series. The book seems to be written towards a younger audience, so that may be why the zaniness is dialed back.

Fun adventure, without packing the punch of the graphic novels.

This was my introduction to the Lumberjanes universe. Immediately following finishing this book, I read the first volume of the Lumberjanes comic by Noelle Stevenson. 3 stars may seem like I was meh about it, but honestly, I felt as though there was too much going on for it to be the best in a written novel format. Once I read the first volume of the comic, I knew that the book definitely would have been better in that comic form. The characters themselves are very colorful and words don't do them justice. I loved so much about this and hope to continue on with the comics and learn more about the characters. It sounds like there is a lot of diversity that isn't really stated black and white style. The Lumberjanes remind me of a mixture of Adventure Time and The Mighty B, which means my kids would definitely enjoy the comics too!

What the junk?! There’s a new Lumberjanes NOVEL for middle-grade readers hitting stores this October! Even if you’re not a hardcore lady type, this book will have readers in stitches as they follow Ripley, Molly, Jo, Mal and April on an all new adventure as they attempt to scale a massive mountain. As usual, things don’t go quite as planned and lots of weird stuff happens. My inner X-Files nerd loves this series for that reason.

Written by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Brooke Allen (one of the series’ original creators), there are plenty of zany adventures, wicked-awesome catch phrases and hilarious moments that keep the plot humming along. I read an advanced reader copy earlier this summer and couldn’t put it down.

What in the Joan, Jett? There’s Unicorns?!

Did I not mention that? Apart from the always charming girl-power heroines, adding unicorns into the mix of supernatural creatures that the girls encounter was lots of fun. The storyline felt whimsical, just like the graphic novels, which I appreciated since I am such a huge fan of the series. There were all sorts of hilarious details, like beautiful unicorns that smell terrible and bizarre camper badges too.

Friendship to the Max!

One detail that I loved about this book was the ability to learn more about each character through the detailed backstory. In the graphic novels, there are lots of fascinating reveals too, but I found that in this medium, there was an even greater opportunity to reveal more through changing point of view and narration. Through the varying narrative voices, this new instalment of Lumberjanes has a lot of cool moments that add a whole new level of enjoyment to the reading experience.

Fantastic Illustrations!

Have I mentioned yet how much I love the illustrations? Scattered throughout the prose, there are lots of illustrations that could have come right from the graphic novels themselves. It was fun to read a scene and then see an imagining of what it might look like, since I’d already read the graphic novels. Truthfully, I’m a sucker for sketches or other elements that give a text greater depth, because it makes the whole reading experience feel richer.

Should you read this book? Um, yeah. If you like girl-power narratives, high-stakes adventures or just stories about lots of weird things happening, this book is for you!

This novelization of Lumberjanes was not as exciting and wonderfully awesome as I wanted it to be. For new readers being introduced to the world of Lumberjanes, it might be the perfect entry point, but for fans of the graphic novels, it was trying too hard and coming up short. 4/5 stars.

For fans of the Lumberjanes, the graphic novel series has become a contemporary feminist cult classic dessert we like to eat for breakfast and the original transformation from graphic novel to chapter book is brilliant and satisfying. May this be the first book in a series that nestles into its right fully due spot on the shelves of vital and multigenerational classic children's chapter book series's!!!!

The Lumberjanes graphic novels have a special place in my heart, so when I saw this galley available I couldn't wait to read it.

For me, I think I just wanted this story in graphic novel form. It's a good story, I just miss the illustrations that I know are so cool. This book would be a great read for kids who aren't graphic novel readers, or for those who just can't get enough of the Lumberjanes.

Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! is a young adult novel spun off from the popular comic series. It’s written by Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer, Supergirl: Being Super) with cover and occasional illustrations by Brooke A. Allen, co-creator of the Lumberjanes.

It’s aimed at ages 10-14 years old, and older readers may find the writing a little strained, as early on, the book attempts to work in as much background and trivia about the characters and concept as possible. I thought it sounded like it was writing down a few times at the beginning; I prefer books aimed at kids that don’t come this close to sounding like an adoring auntie saying “aren’t you cute? yes you are!” This gets better further into the story, though, once we get past the cover-promised elements, where the scouts meet a unicorn herd and climb a mountain.

I’m not going to spoil anything, but as in the comics, there are unexpected supernatural creatures and plenty of teamwork, caring, and friendship. I would have preferred a little more emphasis on the young women interacting with each other to distinguish their personalities and voices, a little less on “here’s another fantastic setting”, but I liked the overall theme, which deals with balancing achievement (stacking up badges, worrying about setting records) with what you learn while doing those things.

My quibbles aside, younger readers, particularly those who like the comics and want more with the characters, will enjoy this story. It is firmly part of the same universe, with much of the same appeal.

The exciting novel adaptation of the popular graphic novels!

…which, TBH, I had no idea was what I was getting into. I’d heard a lot about the Lumberjanes and how awesome the graphic novel was, saw this on NetGalley was was like, “Okay let’s go!” So, knowing nothing about the Lumberjanes, here’s my review.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Roanoke cabin girls discover that unicorns exist (but Edith Piaf are they smelly) and decide to climb a mysterious and magical mountain in order to earn their Extraordinary Explorers badge. Despite every set-back and throughout the fun, the girls remember the key to being a Lumberjane is FRIENDSHIP TO THE MAX.

Amazon.com says that the books are geared for fifth grade and up, but the writing seems a little juvenile (fair warning, Mariko Tamaki appears to have a fondness for comma overload, so be prepared to sit down and help your little one parse through some pause-eriffic sentences). I think that a mature third grader ready and willing to jump into longer chapter books would love this fast-paced adventure, particularly if they have been introduced to the graphic novels first. And bonus! There are pictures in this book, drawn by the same illustrator for the graphic novels.
