I’m not sure if it was the writing style, the topic or both combined but I found that this book left me cold. It took me an unheard of 9 days to read 544 pages.

A young man wakes with no memory of who he is? Where he comes from or how he ended up bruised and beaten? He became known to the media as ‘The Lost Boy’ and was found to be suffering from dissociative amnesia. He names himself Richard Kite and in the end hires investigator David Raker to ‘find him’ by which he obviously means himself.
David’s journey to find who Richard is takes him on a voyage of over 7000 miles aboard a cruise liner to Sophia in the Empress Islands where he finds a much needed but unexpected ally.
This book has all the ingredients of being a cracking psychological thriller, bad guys, good guys, intrigue, mystery and murder the lot but it just misses the spot for me.

Reading for an honest review. Thank you Netgalley and Penguin

I had previously heard good things about author Tim Weaver but had never gotten round to reading one of his novels, so when I was offered this I thought it was a perfect opportunity.

The novel is about a man who wakes up bruised, beaten and with no memory of who he is or where he came from, the press immediately dub him 'The Lost Man'. Now ten months later the man who has assumed the name Richard Kite is desperate to find out who he is. Despite police investigations and newspaper appeals the truth remains buried with no one coming forward to help him.

Richard Kite approached private investigator David Raker who has an excellent reputation for locating missing people, however this is an odd case where the missing person is the one seeking the answers. When Raker starts to investigate it leaves him with more questions than answers, who is Richard Kite, why does no one know him and what links him to the body of a woman found beside a London railway line two years ago?

This is a well written novel with an intriguing plot, I feel this may be the first of many Tim Weaver books I read.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Penguin UK - Michael Joseph for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Unlike so many current heroes of detective fiction David Raker isn't permanently drunk and when he gets beaten up in the course of his work it actually works and takes time to recover so I was delighted to get a copy of his latest adventure courtesy of netgalley. This case is different to his previous missing persons cases in that the missing person is suffering from amnesia so it's not him that's missing but every detail of his life before he was found injured by the sea. As Raker risks his life to hunt down the truth the reader is given another story told in flashbacks set In a very mysterious isolated community where residents are warned not to go behind a massive fence or something terrible will happen to them. An enjoyable read but as the plot progressed I found it pretty unbelievable so was ultimately disappointed.. Still given it 4 stars because I thin he's a really good character and enjoyed it until he began to get to the bottom of the mystery

The premise had me intrigued from the start. A man with little or no memory of who he is, where he's from, or what happened to him. Even with a wave of publicity behind him, and with his face splashed over the news and internet, nobody comes forward to fill in the blanks. What starts as a small town mystery, and one man's search for his own identity, grows into something far bigger. The opening few chapters were a little slow, but worth persevering as once it picks up pace, the momentum is great. Similarly, some of the characters take a little time to fully form, and grow on you, but once the do, you've got a good cast to carry the story forward.

Excellent story. Very well crafted. It drew me in and enmeshed me in its intricate web. I found myself eager to keep on reading; wanting to know what the secret was that was hiding at 'The Brink'. The storyline wasn't predictable and I was suitably shocked when all revelations were made. Didn't want to put this book down and can't wait to pick the next one up!

This is number 8 in the David Raker series, I have never read any of the others but it didnt feel like i was jumping in mid-series. The story follows Davids pursuit to help a young man who has no memory of his life. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep it interesting. All in all an enjoyable read.

This is the first Tim Weaver I have read and I found I am Missing an enjoyable read. Richard Kite has Dissociative Amnesia and hires David Raker to find out who he is. This story has lots of twist and turns and it kept me guessing.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Penguin UK for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

I am a Tim Weaver fan already and his 8th book still kept me enthralled. This book's twist is that Raker gets to meet the person he is hoping to find from the beginning. The research into his subjects is evident for all to read in the layers he constructs throughout his novels. His style of writing always makes me feel that I am beside Raker watching events unfurl. The frequent references to Raker's deceased wife also make his character more believable and human. Another most respectable crime read from Tim Weaver.

This was another brilliant read from Tim Weaver. The story began with Raker meeting a guy who had lost his memory and wanted help to find out who he was. Twists and turns later, Raker finds himself on the other side of the world trying to solve the mystery. Yet another book which I couldn't put down. Would thoroughly recommend. Thanks to Netgalley for preview copy.

Richard Kite is effectively missing. When waking up in a bad way outside a lifeboat station, he finds he is suffering from 'Dissociative Amnesia', He doesn't know who he really is, whether he has a family and knows nothing about his life. He enlists David Raker to find these facts out for him and what happens is something that Raker couldn't even have imagined.

I Am Missing is brilliantly written. I was on the edge of my seat, deeply engrossed, turning the pages hurriedly.

It's full of twists and is a very involving read; more than enough story to keep the reader guessing.

I loved the plot of 'finding' a missing person, Yes, it should be relatively easy to find someone, especially seeing as though Richards plight was front page news. Wouldn't someone would come forward and 'claim' him? But what this book does very cleverly is feed snippets of Richards past and bring them together in a brilliant surprise ending .I am tired of reading blurb on books promising a 'twisty' ending; one that will shock, only to find that it really doesn't and I had guessed it 100 pages earlier or worse, whilst reading the blurb on the back. This books ending doesn't disappoint. It is clever, different and brilliant.
Weaver crafts engrossing, believable characters. The story is brilliantly written, superbly plotted, engaging and suspenseful, I would highly recommend this book to either existing readers of Tim Weaver's books or as a great introduction to new readers. I have saturated my reading brain recently with books in this genre and started this book with a 'whatever' attitude. Fast forward to 3am and I was still reading it, unable to put it down, even though my eyes were closing!
I loved it. It has everything I love in a book: suspense, intrigue, mystery and grit. More please Mr Weaver!

This was a disappointing read, too many far fetched twists and turns. If I had not felt obliged to review the book for Netgalley I would not have completed reading the book.

The book has three stands to it. The main one is private investigator David Raker involved with a man who has lost his memory. He was found on a beach near a lifeboat station in Hampshire. He doesn't know how he got there, who he is or where he came from. Raker investigates. The second strand is a diary by a young girl who lives on an island in the south atlantic, with similar weather to the Falklands. The third strand is a travel book around the British isles. I have read a couple of the author's Raker novels and this one is equally good. He is a brilliant storyteller. Recommended. See my full review on the Euro-Crime website.

I liked the beginning and was intrigued by how the plot was unfolding and the setting of the island was quite atmospheric, but then it got boring - too much detecting on laptops, too much "telling"- third hand filling in of the story, too much hiding and chasing around. There were too many characters, none of them developed very well. Then the thing we all want to find out was not revealed until right at the end, This was annoying rather than tantalising and ultimately not very interesting. (spoiler) I also hate shootouts at the end. Overall, I thought this was a man's book, so not for me.

I have never read anything by Tim Weaver before, and after reading I am Missing thanks to NeyGalley I would definitely read other books by him.

I enjoyed the first half of the book (pre-ship) far better than the second, as I found myself getting confused and the plot not as easy to follow.

There were some major editing issues with the kindle copy I received from NetGalley, such as new paragraphs halfway through a sentence, hyphens in the middle of words were they weren't needed (such as imagin-ary) and random sections in red font. These did not affect my rating of the book, but are quite frustrating.

An well written mystery that kept me guessing until close to the end of the novel. Very unusual, and captivating in terms of storyline and settings.

I Am Missing by Tim Weaver first came to my attention via a promotional email. Despite having written several books this is the first one of his I had read.
After having read it I am unsure what I thought of it exactly. It felt disjointed somehow, like two separate books. Each one was interesting but somehow, they didn’t mesh.
However, that isn’t too say that this book isn’t readable. It is still an interesting read. Penny’s chapters, in particular were my favourite. If the whole book was like that then this book would be getting a five out of five.
David Raker is a private investigator hired by a man called Richard Kite. David Raker is used to finding missing persons but this case is different. Richard Kite, the man who hired him, is the missing person.
Richard Kite has dissociative amnesia:
“a condition where you forget important information…everything important to me is gone. I have no memory of who I am.”
He thinks his name is Richard because that is what came to mind when the first person asked him. He doesn’t know for sure though and Kite is a surname he plucked out of thin air. He thinks he grew up by the sea and has an overwhelming memory of looking out onto a beach. He feels this is a memory from his childhood but again he is not sure.
“He may only have been in his thirties, but he spoke like someone a lot older. The loss of such important memories – the idea of there being people who may have loved him, and who he may have loved back – had altered him.”
He was found near a lifeboat station and Raker recognises him in a vague way from the national and local press surrounding the discovery of him.
The police supposed he had been assaulted because his injuries seemed to indicate that this was the case but as he had no memory of the circumstances there was little he could do about it.
He was lucky that Reverend Parsons had called and offered him a job and help finding somewhere to stay. This was lucky as he had no NI number, no driving licence, no passport and no NHS number.
“Everything was back to front. Normally, financial traits, emails, texts and phone calls were how I began building a picture…With Richard Kite, the person I was trying to locate was sitting to feet in front of me.”
All he has to go on are the very small things Richard thinks he knows about himself so initially Raker is unsure how to help him.
Penny and her sister don’t know much about ‘The Brink’. What they do know is that some grown-ups claim that it is just the marshland that they need to avoid, others claim there are unexploded landmines, and others claim there is a monster. Penny and her sister are curious and can’t help trying to find out what is going on.
Who is Richard Kite? What connection does he have a woman who was discovered murdered? What is really hidden on the Brink?

This book is about Richard Kite. He decides to hire PI David Raker to find out who he is. Richard was found washed up at Southampton with no memory of who he was or how he got there. He is not even sure his name is Richard, it just felt right.

I was really intrigued by this book because I am always fascinated with missing people and how they can go missing, especially in this day and age. This book gave a different spin on the subject. This book isn't very fast paced but there is just enough keep you wanting to turn that page and find out more. My main problem with this story was that all the clues fell into the PI's lap very easily to the point were I didn't find it very believable. It is worth mentioning that this is something like the fifth in the series which is something I was unaware of when I requested the book. This didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book because background information was filled in when needed.

I couldn’t believe my luck when I was offered the latest Tim Weaver story by Netgalley in return for an honest review. I have been such a fan since I read his first book. He produces an exiting story, well constructed and plausible, .Always a well written tale with excellent descriptive powers which takes his readers into the action with him. This latest offering is no exception.

Again Tim Weaver’s hero, David Raker, features.. He is a former journalist which meanshe has many useful connections and is now a professional searcher for missing persons. This time his subject is alive and seemingly well. But having washed up out of he water at Southampton, he has lost his memory. He has been named Richard Kite and his only memories are of looking out of a window at a beach where he was brought up and of the image of a television mast radiating rays at the start of a children’s TV programme. Not much to go on, need less to say, Raker does finally uncover his identity and background as well as a lot of evil doing. But not before he puts himself in severe physical danger on several occasions. But happily he no longer encounters the improbable injuries sustained in the first books, where he gets up and is ready for the next impossible fight. Things are a bit , but only a bit, more realistic now. But Raker remains a highly likable protagonist.

I was delighted to see that this author’s trade mark deserted, scary areas, often hidden in the middle of urban settlements, feature again. Where does he find these places ? Are they real or a figment of his brilliant imagination ? Probably a combination of both. First of all it’s a length of deserted railway track, platform and crossing bridge, cut off, because of the Cross Rail Project. It’s fenced and boarded up right in the middle of London. It’s here that a body is dumped. Then he goes on to scare his readers with descriptions of cold, bleak deserted and wild landscapes in the Empress Islands in the South Atlantic. Surely these islands have to be based on the Falkland Islands. The description near the end of the book of the hero David Raker investigating the long abandoned cabin by the lake is guaranteed to make the hair on the back of anyone’s head stand on end.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough. Take the opportunity to relax in the company of a master story teller as he takes you to yet more scary places. If only I could give it ten stars.
