Brilliant book. You literally can't put this down once you start. Haunting evocative writing and a Christie-esque mystery with many hidden layers. Loved it.

Thank you Netgalley. Brilliant book. Just brilliant. I loved it and was hooked from the first to the last page, literally! Highly recommend.

I chose this book based on the title, which promises intrigues and mystery. And i was not disappointed. T J Brearton wrote a brilliant book. It started off slowly, but picked up pace quite soon. Although Brett’s reaction to finding the bones was a little off, the rest of the book made up for this little glitch. The book has a unique plot and immerses the reader in a jolly good read. I love the mixture of different stories that gives depth to the book. I highly recommend this book. The author is definitely on my “to read”.

Unfortunately not for me, had I realised that the book is set in the US I admittedly wouldn't have requested it.

This booked started off very light and felt like a domestic noir, then it's like a rip cord is pulled and it's a different book entirely. I liked that there were two different storylines and it was a true crime thriller. It's very hard to write this review considering the twists and turns - I can't give too much away. There are a lot of secrets and things you won't see coming.

A gripping and thrilling read that I was unable to put down!

Brett Larsen and his wife Emily have bought a lovely home, Emily is expecting their first child. Things are perfect…..until they find bones in their garden. Buried beside the bones is a tin box that contains a name and a number.
This book was really fast paced and there were red herrings all over the place and a high body count!
I found myself constantly questioning who to believe and who to trust in this book. Once I picked it up I could not put it down and it literally left me on the edge of my seat on more than one occasion.
Trying to decide how the very different lives of the characters were going to cross paths kept me guessing and this book tied everything up in a nice neat bow.
This is defiantly one to read. Out of five stars??? I give it six!!

Unfortunately this did not do it for me, although I seem to be in the minority. I found it pretty dull, with too much description of banal things and awkward dialogue. Brett and Emily were both a bit wet; the only character I liked was Russo and I'm not quite sure what the point of Morales was. I did work out the 'twist', but it was quite a good one so there's a star for Russo and a star for the twist.

Sorry I didn't enjoy it more. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read the ARC of Buried Secrets.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I would have liked as it was a little different than what I was expecting. I was expecting a gripping thriller but instead it had a gangster feel to it which isn't really my cup of tea. I had a hard time connecting to the storyline and mostly all the characters involved. Although, I do appreciate that this story was well-written and did grab my attention enough to finish it.

Combined Traveling Sister Read Review with my sister Brenda that we both prepared for our blog:

Buried Secrets was a Traveling Sister Group Read that we all enjoyed reading together but this was our first book that produced very short discussions although, we did have a few good laughs, overall this story did not work for us.

When we first meet Brett he is digging up buried secrets in his garden which sounds gripping enough but not so much for the Traveling Sisters. Things started to go sideways for us quite early on and we had some trouble connecting with the characters and the storyline. We found the story to be underwhelming with little suspense to keep us wanting to turn those pages.

The story and tension does pick up a bit near the end and has one pretty good twist that made me really see why this book would work for some other readers. I would recommend this book with caution.

Thank you to NetGalley, T.J. Brearton, and Bookouture for providing me a copy to read and review.

Brett and Emily are ecstatic as they start their lives together. A new marriage, a new home, and now trying for their first child. Brett gladly takes on his first DIY project and begins digging a garden for Emily in the backyard. After turning over shovel-loads of earth, he discovers some bones. Are they human? Has someone been buried on their property?
Across the state, Russo is trying to put his life back on the straight and narrow. Unfortunately, he is picked up for an outstanding warrant and he is forced back into the system.
Two totally unrelated stories running parallel until their paths collide, leaving devastation and chaos in their wake. Normally I really enjoy that, but unfortunately, this one fell far short for me.
Actually, I ended up having a lot of trouble with this book. The premise sounded great, but I couldn’t connect with Brett and Emily at all. Brett's quest to find the truth regarding the bones just didn't feel genuine.
While there was a significant twist at the end, it just wasn’t enough to save this read for me. Although there was some great praise for this book, for me, I was left disappointed.
A wonderful reading experience with my Traveling Sisters Brenda, Norma, Sarah, Susanne and Diane!

Newlyweds Brett and Emily have every reason to be happy: they've finally moved into their new home in the county after an arduous buying process, they're deeply in love, and Emily is expecting. Life seems pretty good. Normal. Happy. Casual. ...Unsuspecting. Their lives change drastically after Brett finds human bones buried in the yard. He also finds a note nearby that at first makes absolutely no sense. Of course, they involve the police... but Brett can't let it go. He wants to figure out who was buried there and why. There might even be a book in it...

We also follow Russo, a man with a troubling history who's managed to turn things around. He has a wife and a beautiful little girl at home, two excellent reasons to keep on the right side of the law. Money is tight though, and he goes to prison when he can't afford a fine. He's looking at years, too much time that will make him miss milestones his little family will experience. He soon makes friends of sorts in prison who may help him get out... or perhaps stay in much longer.

Had potential, but ultimately fell short for me. The beginning was slow, and I felt a disconnect from most of the characters. Little information keeps the reader guessing, but sometimes that negatively affects the story. The second half of the book picks up and features action of an almost breakneck speed. This half of the story is fast paced and exciting, but sometimes I got a little confused over the details. The second half was at least a three, so that's what I'm going with as my rating.

This book has many high ratings, so I'd recommend checking it out for yourself.

I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Bookouture, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.

Emily and Brett Larson are newly weds living in their first home in the country. Emily has been trying to conceive and they are ecstatic when they found out she is going to have a baby.
One day Brett unearths what appears to be a skeleton on their property. The resulting police investigation reveals links with criminal activity and their lives are soon under threat. During all this turmoil, he finds his salvation by writing a story about the case.
James Russo is an ex crim trying to turn his life around. Desperate to protect his wife and child he agrees to do one last job. Soon Emily, Brett and James find themselves drawn together in an action packed series of events.
My favourite character in this story was James. The love for his wife and child was unquestionable and touching. I sympathised with him as he was faced with a dilemma that might send him back to jail.
You will find yourself pulled along by a storyline with plenty of twists and tension to hold your interest. The action feels intense and the danger real. Well done T. J. Brearton!

Brett and Emily are enjoying married life in their new rural home. They have dreams of living the good life but when Brett is digging their garden he discovers human bones. They call in the police expecting to be told the bones are old but instead are confronted with the reality that they haven't been there long at all. Then the police show them three mugshots and they realise this is something very much in the now. Brett is fascinated and it reignites a passion for writing. He begins his own investigation with hopes he can get a book out of their experience but soon finds he and Emily are at the centre of their very own horrific thriller.

This was a bit of a slow starter for me. I had to persevere over the first few chapters. I think it was because there are two story threads, one for the couple and another for Russo, an ex con trying to go straight who finds himself in prison over an unpaid driving fine. The connection wasn't immediately apparent and at first I found it hard to care. But then suddenly it just clicked and I found myself devouring this. Despite a migraine from hell that have me double vision I refused to put it down! The buried secret to this book is that it's a bloody great book. I did guess the twist fairly early on but its not integral to the conclusion so didn't ruin anything for me. If anyone has the same problem as me I can only urge you to stick with it - it's really worth it.

This was a really good read. Unputdownable. A wild and crazy ride. A well written and action packed book. The twist at the end definitely caught me off guard. I really enjoyed reading this book.

When Brett and Emily Larson move to their new home they discover lots of surprises. Emily learns she is pregnant and then they discover a body buried in their new garden. No one knows who it is or where they came from but all of a sudden people are interested in their new home and the story of a bank robbery.
The book started out good and finished the same way. I loved the characters and will be reading more by this author.

Thanks to Netgalley for my copy.

This is a rollercoaster of a ride. A young couple, Brett and newly pregnant Emily buy their first home, a small cottage with several acres and begin the cultivation to grow vegetables. Brett discovers some human bones and calls the authorities. Meanwhile Russo an ex con is arrested and incarcerated for non payment of fines. He has a wife and baby daughter and a steady job and has been staying out of trouble.
The story is told in alternating POV's of the couple and Russo. Russo finds himself drawn into an elaborate plan to recover lost money to ensure his freedom.

I really thought I knew the direction this book was taking me but I was totally wrong and the twist at the end surprised me. A very enjoyable action packed novel.
