Loved this story!
The vibrant energy and determination from both characters leapt off the page. Their humour and tenacity, strong-willed nature and friendship brings a fresh, dynamic and spirited story.
A great read, I look forward to more.
Dillon Alexander has been Kit Derby’s nemesis since third grade, when he beat her in the school spelling bee. They’ve been competing ever since, driving each other to be the best at everything from science fairs to bake sales. While working together one night during their senior year, they stopped bickering long enough to share an emotionally charged kiss. But a tragedy that same night left them both racked with guilt, driving Dillon out of town and leaving Kit determined to keep her distance.
Now an emergency room physician, Dillon has returned to their hometown of Chance, Nebraska. Soon he and Kit fall back into old habits, sparring in public while trying to stay out of each other’s arms. But when a blizzard traps them overnight at Kit’s grandmother’s farmhouse, the real competition begins: Who will be the first to give in to the feelings they’ve denied for a decade?

I have really enjoyed meeting the residents of Chance. Sure they get a lot of tornadoes but it has taught everyone the benefit of working together. Everyone but Kit and Dillon who feel the need to turn everything into a contest between them. That worked well until Dillon moved back home to Chance and is now trying to convince Kit that there is something more between them then competitiveness.
TURNED UP is the third book in the Taking Chances series and I do have to say that it is my favorite. That is in part because of the sparks that fly between Kit and Dillon and in part because I have the opportunity to see how all the other residents are doing. This series has been about about second chances and the power of love which is something that is good to be reminded off time and time again.
I do think that any of my readers who enjoy contemporary romance will enjoy this book as well as the ones preceding it. No real in your face violence but there some rather warm sex scenes.
*** I received this book at no charge from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed within are my own.
his third book in the series was very interesting. It felt like it was different from the other two in the series--more isolated? In the other two, the tornado that hits the town...again, seemed to play a significant part in the story. What happened to the main characters during the tornado was mentioned but most of this book took place in an isolated farmhouse during a snowstorm. I love the isolated during a snowstorm thing--the book just had a different vibe to it.
The main character, Kit and Dillon, were awesome together. They start out clashing...a lot. Ms. Nicholas always gives her readers incredible characters. These two clash constantly unless they are alone. Then their clothes fall off. I found it interesting that Dillon is an ER doctor and Kit is a psychologist, but yet Dillon seems to have a better handle on what is going on between them. Dillon just totally throws Kit for a loop. She can no longer be around him and be her hard nosed, down to business self. And she doesn't like it. In fact, she hates it. Will Dillon be able to convince Kit that they can be together without her losing herself?
I was given a copy of this book via Netgalley.
Charming book. Liked this author and her books. Liked this book
This is the third book in the Taking Chances series. I loved this book. Dillon and Kit having always been nemesis but love and hate are soooo closely related :) they challenge each other in the best ways. I laughed and cried while reading this book. I love the story of their HEA. It's Hot hot hot and I highly recommend this book along with the rest of the series. You can't go wrong with An Erin Nicholas romance.
light and fun romance with some good steamy scenes! i can't wait to read more by this author!
Turned Up is a sexy, sweet rivals-to-lovers romance. Kit and Dillon have been arguing and competing against each other and trying to one-up each other since they were kids. They challenge each other, they drive each other nuts, and they have secretly always been in love with each other. But, it isn't until one night when they're stuck at her grandmother's house while a blizzard rages on outside, that they finally open up to each other a little and let each other in. They spend the night steaming up the fort they've made in the living room, and in the morning they agree that finally, finally they might mean more to each other than just the rivals/enemies/friends with benefits that they've been for years. That night in her grandmother's house wasn't their first tryst, but it was the first one in which their emotions got the best of them and they opened up a little.
I really enjoyed Turned Up. Their banter is sexy and snarky and entertaining, but it's clear that they had much stronger feelings for each other than they had ever let on. There was a little angst when Kit realized being in love was changing her in small ways, and I wanted to smack her for being such a brat about it and running away from her feelings, but it was resolved pretty quickly, thankfully. Dillon was my favorite part of Turned Up. He's sexy, sweet and loves with his whole heart. When Kit gave him some much needed psychoanalysis and he came to some realizations about himself, I was tearing up a little to see the larger than life man so humbled. But then that was what Kit was best at - keeping Dillon humble and calling him on his bs. If you enjoy rivals-to-lovers romance, or just romance in general, Turned Up is highly recommended.
Kit Derby has always been good at everything up until Dillon Alexander beat her in a spelling bee contest in the third grade. They have been rivals ever since. Each trying to outdo the other, even once they reached adulthood the rivalry still did not stop. In a way, this was a good thing because Kit felt it pushed her to be better and to strive for better. Now she is a successful psychiatrist and Dillon is a successful doctor.
Rivalry was not the only thing going on between Kit and Dillon. Through the years they have hooked up on a number of occasions, but it never really went anywhere. Although both of them have feelings for each other, neither one of them really expressed how they truly felt for one another. Kit always tried to stay away from the emotional side of it and tried to keep her distance from anything intimate ever happening again. Deep down she felt that Dillon may not have the same feelings for her that she felt for him, so her guard was always up. The last thing she needed was to get her heart broken by the one man she has loved ever since high school.
During a blizzard, they both get stuck overnight at Kit's grandmother's farmhouse miles away from town. Even now, stuck during a heavy snowstorm, they are still competing with each other over who is the better cook. It doesn't take long though before sparks begin to fly and for the heat to reach more than just the kitchen. Will this only last for one night or can they finally express the feelings that they have for one another and see how far this relationship could go.
I really enjoyed the back and forth banter between Kit and Dillon. You can see how much they both admire one another and help push each other to be the best. It was great to see early on the feelings that Dillon had for Kit. Normally, the romances that I read, it takes a while for the alpha hero to realize how much he has come to love and need the heroine. This is not the case here, you learn early on how much Dillon actually wants to be with kit. I found this so refreshing and sweet. Ok lets face it, it made my heart melt. I think every woman, deep down inside, wants and needa a guy like Dillon in her life.
Erin Nicholas is a new to me author. TURNED UP is the first book I have ever read and certainly will not be my last. Her writing style, humor, and the way she makes her characters come to life really has you falling in love with them and wishing for their happily ever after. I was happy yet sad when I finally finished this book.
Although this is the third book in a series, it can be read as a stand alone. You better believe that I am adding the first two books in the series to my TBR pile right now!
I liked the book it was okay, but it took me quite a while to read it. I don't know why I couldn't get fully into this book but it just seemed so long. I still want to read more by this author though.
I really like Erin Nicholas' books. She's got a great way of bringing the characters to life and you can really feel the tension.
I was given an ARC by Netgalley in exchange for an honest opinion.
I have read several books by Erin Nicholas and none of them have ever disappointed me. They have just the right amount of story, steam and sex!
I absolutely love chapter 12 and never dreamt the book would take that kind of unexpected turn.
I'm looking forward to future stories about their weddings!
5 Turned Up STARS!! This book was another amazing story in this series. I loved getting to know Dillon and Kit and all their competitiveness. The story was beautifully written and heartfelt. Erin Nicholas is one of my favorite authors, she always writes fantastic stories.
Turned Up is the third book in the Taking Chances trilogy by Erin Nicholas and centers on Dillon and Kit who have known each other since elementary school. They have always tried to “one-up” each other and that is the basis for their relationship.
Dillon is an ER physician who treats the physical maladies that strike that townspeople but doesn’t always have the best bedside manner. Kit is a mental health professional who sees the emotional side of the patient’s life and deals with their mental well-being. Everyone in town knows their relationship is based on competition and “one-up-man-ship” and that is how they get things done. In spite of their differences, they have a common bond… they are passionate about what they do, they want to fix the world and they want to make their hometown better by serving the people who live there.
A blizzard traps Kit and Dillon in her grandmother’s house which is outside of town and they are forced to spend the night together with no heat or power. A blanket fort, a fire in the fireplace (with marshmallows for s’mores) and a rousing game of Chutes and Ladders keep them occupied. The solitude creates the perfect environment in which to share their true feelings… but can they set aside their competitive natures long enough to realize what they have together? Sparks fly when Kit and Dillon are together… both from the chemistry between them and from their competitive natures.
True to form, Erin has created a wonderfully romantic emotional story with humor thrown in for good measure. Trust me, after reading this book, a blanket fort and a game of Chutes and Ladders will never be the same! This book is a wonderful conclusion to this series and I truly enjoyed it.
Dillion Alexander and Kit Darby have challenged each other to be the best ever since they were in the third grade. But ten years ago, a terrible tragedy caused these two to go their separate ways, so the guilt of what they did didn't consume them. However, now Dillion and Kit are reunited in their hometown and finding it once again difficult to stay away from each other. Can they finally get things right, so they can have the happy ever after they both want, or will they lose they best thing that's ever happened to them -- finding love with the right person?
Ms. Nicholas always finds a way to engage me with her stories and this has been a fascinating series because Chance is a town struck by tornadoes and blizzards, and where the good people of the town band together to make everything right after such a disaster. And really, no one does it better or works harder than Dillion and Kit as well as the secondary characters in their friends -- Avery, Jake, Max and Bree. The way this story started drew me in immediately, as it seems Dillion and Kit are at it again in thinking everything is a competition, Is Kit just as capable of handling an emergency situation as Dilion, even though she's a psychiatrist and he's an emergency room physician?
As for the dialogue, it was well-written, riveting and I liked the obstacles these two had to overcome on their journey to happy ever after. Such as the guilt they've both had since a terrible tragedy in their teen years and whether Dillion can get past it; and whether Kit can overcome the fact that she believes being with Dillion is changing her. Will she realize that change can be a good thing? Moreover, the heroine is sassy, resilient and I loved how the way she challenged Dillion and that the hero didn't give up on her when she was doing her best to distance herself from him. I also liked how tight she was with her friends and that they were willing to offer her advice on how happy ever after is worth it. While the hero, he's hard-working, determined to do whatever it takes to win the heroine over and I liked how he teased the heroine to get a rise out of her. So, that Kit would challenge him just as hard as he challenges her, which is proven by the dilemma they face at the beginning of the story that puts Kit one up in their competition in driving each other to be the best, Is the heroine the best, considering the emergency she helped with?
Overall, Ms. Ncholas has penned another fantastic read in this book where the chemistry and romance between this couple was explosive and where the hot romance did justice to this couple's intense chemistry. The way this story ended had me concerned for one of the main characters because of the situation they have to handle that puts them in danger, but I'm glad that everything worked out for this couple, as they're meant to be. I would recommend Turned Up by Erin Nicholas, if you enjoy the enemy to lovers trope or books by authors Melanie Shawn, Melissa Foster, Melody Grace and Jamie Beck.
Was a great read! Characters were believable and storyline was superb! Would recommend!
Nice finish to the trio of pairswho find love during a tornado.
Kit and Dillon have been in competition with each other since the third grade. After several times coming together, the two are trapped in a blizzard. Both have such sexual chemistry that things are bound to happen while they are stuck at her grandma's house.
Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. Although I do recommend the other books in the series as well. Each of the characters in this series are thrown together by mother nature, but in the end love prevails.
This book really surprised me! In my experience, these series books can become somewhat formulaic. I don't think this is a bad thing, I read a lot of romance-series-books because it's great entertainment and lets me just switch off for a while. But this story has a lot of unexpected heart!
The H & h are really well fleshed out characters, with very human emotions and back stories. I found myself connecting with these characters in a way that I usually don't. The end result being that this is an engrossing romance full of sexy tension, chemistry, and some real, genuine human interest.
I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for this review, and I *highly* endorse this book!
I loved Kit and Dillon! I loved them hard! They have been rivals for most of their lives but they have an underlying chemistry that they can't ignore. Both of them push the other one to be better versions of themselves.
This was one of my favorite quotes.
"Maybe. Maybe I'm the brave one. The one who's willing to take a chance here. The one who can see how f....ing amazing this can be."
In that moment I don't think that I could love Dillon any more!! Kit and Dillon just complemented each other and were an amazing couple!
This is the 3rd book in the Taking Chances series and was by far my favorite!! I loved Dillon and Kit from the previous two books and was excited to see where Erin Nicholas took this two or rather where they took us LOL! I so loved the competitiveness between Dillon and Kit, the way they constantly battled back and forth trying to one up each other totally made this read that bit more enjoyable and hard to put down.
I loved their history and everything about this couple is what you come to expect from an Erin Nicholas read it has plenty of "Oh Wow" moments right along with being funny enthralling and H.O.T
Another massive HIT not to be missed from Erin Nicholas!! Can't wait to see what else this author has in store for her readers
