For those that have read the previous stories, this one will not disappoint you and if you are new to the series, know it’s a stand alone. That said, you should take the time to read the previous books so you can enjoy this one even more.
This time, we get the story of Kit and Dillon. These two have had a rivalry since they were in third grade, one that made each other stronger. They had a special night during HS but tragedy interfered and they went their separate ways.
Dillon , now a physician, has returned to the town he grew up in after years of working with Doctors without Borders, as a military physician and as an ER doctor in a major city. Kit, is the town’s psychiatrist and excellent in her profession. Between all the rivalry there is chemistry and this scares Kit.
The story , for me , was a little slow at first but I loved that the author dealt with the fears one sometimes encounter when faced with the possibility of love. Will it soften the individual , will they lose their identity, will they become weak, or will that love make them stronger, and richer especially if the one that loves them “ gets them” and makes them a better person.
I was gifted this copy by Netgalley. and Montlake Romance. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Overall, I enjoyed the book well enough, but there's was nothing that really stood out about or made it memorable for me. I'm not a big romance reader, but I like to read some here and there to be able to recommend books as a librarian. I would recommend this one, as I do think readers of the genre will like this one a lot. It's just not something that I loved. All in all, it is better than many romance type novels I have read, though, and I did find the characters likable. It earns 3 stars = I liked it.
Dillon Alexander, a doctor, has moved back to Chance after being away for ten years. He and Kit Derby who is a psychiatrist at the same hospital have a love hate relationship. They have flirted since high school where Kit had a crush on him, but he was dating another girl. Kit and Dillon have always competed to be the best at everything they did which made them both better. They get stuck in a snowstorm and Dillon approaches Kit about taking their relationship to another level.
It is always funny how someone that is good at their job does a poor job of helping themselves in their area of expertise which is what Kit found out about herself. She loves the arguing with Dillion, but also like the romance side. Dillon is a super attractive man that has everything going for him, but has found out that he needs someone who challenges him like Kit. This is a great story about two people who learn how to come to terms with loving each other, but still challenging each other. I loved the story, and strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.
Hugely enjoyable and entertaining story about the romance between lifelong rivals. Dillon and Kit have known each other since childhood and have had a ridiculously competitive love-hate relationship. Things came to a head during their senior year of high school but a dreadful tragedy occurred which derailed their romance. In the intervening years their insane chemistry has flared up a few times, but distance has kept them in check. However now that Dillon has moved home it's time to see whether their relationship can evolve from frenemies to lovers...
I loved how Nicholas addressed the evolution of their relationship. So many times in stories like this the change appears seamless. Here however we're told about how strange the new dynamic feels. In particular we see how Kit struggles to accept her growing feelings for Dillon without allowing them to change who she is and how she perceives herself. I loved this because it seemed so much more authentic! A lot of behaviour is habit and by letting go of some of the negative aspects of their relationship they are changing a lot of these habits and that has weight.
I also loved the humour throughout the story, particularly between Kit and Dillon. Whether it's their banter or the inner monologues they are written with great humour and I really liked them!
This was the third book in the series, and although it is certainly possible to read it as a stand alone it is really obvious that these previous books exist and who they are about (and on the strength of this story I would recommend that you read them, I'll certainly be going back and doing so at the first opportunity!).

In this conclusion to the "Tornado Series", Kit and Dillon are the final couple in Chance, NE to explore their relationship. While the first two books in the series took place during the tornado that strikes the town, "Turned Up" takes place 6 months after the tornado during a blizzard. Kit and Dillon find themselves trapped overnight in the empty house belonging to Kit's grandmother. They are forced to face the feelings they have had for each other since high school. Through the night and subsequent weeks, the ER doctor and town psychiatrist have to decide how they will go forward both professionally and personally. This third novel in the trilogy is a great conclusion to this peek into the lives of those in Chance, NE.
I received an ARC from NetGalley.
Erin Nicholas keeps outdoing herself as evidenced by the latest addition to her Taking Chances series, Turned Up. We have met the main characters Dr. Kit Derby and Dr. Dillon Alexander in the first two books in the series. This is one couple who are champions at competing with each other (since third grade) and pushing each other to do their best. Oh! And they are also most expert at bickering back and forth with each other. Oil meet water - do not mix well together. Therefore they both work hard to avoid being alone together. But what will happen when the two frenemies are stuck alone together overnight during a blizard? Attraction is most undeniable. Passion ignites. Then.... nope you have to read this fun story yourself to find out what happens next. Just a few clues for you: blanket forts in front of a blazing fire, competition chili, rooster races and you will especially enjoy Dillon's visit to Kit's office during her phone call with Helen Litner concerning the Founder's Day Celebration!
This book is the third book of this series but it completely stands alone. One does not have to have read the previous two to enjoy this one. This book contains both on-screen sex and cursing (including f-bombs) so if those things will cause you to leave a bad review, you should skip this one.
After loving the first book and being a little but underwhelmed with the second book of this series (sorry Ms. Nicholas, I still love your writing) I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, but I absolutely LOVED this book. Kit and Dillon were surprisingly perfectly matched and I loved the way that they found their strengths when they challenged each other. The issues that they dealt with in this one ran the gamut perfectly from mundane to 'holy crap what is happening?' without ever being boring or moving into eye-roll worthy territory which is a tribute to the strength of Ms. Nicholas' writing – not all authors have the ability to make it all work in the same book, but she nails that balance every single time. This story was the perfect ending to this series, but I'll admit to hoping that we get a few “bonus scenes” down the road so that we can revisit Chance in the future because I am going to miss these characters.
I requested and was very generously granted an ARC of this book via NetGalley. I was under no obligation to write this review, I did so because I loved the story.
This is my first time reading this series. It can stand alone though it is #3 in the series. I read and understoof everything even without reading the other books in the series. I beyond loved the story. It is well written, fun and is a fantastic hate to love storyline.
Kit and Dillon have fought forever. In school they were constantly the smartest kids and always trying to one up the other. They even had crushes on the other but the real issue between them is that Dillon was taken. He was in love with Abi and so to get Dillon's attention Kit has been fighting with him then and for years.
And in the years they have also had sex several times. But its a one night thing and then the next day its back to hating each other. Now they both work in the same hospital, are trying to build a clinic and Dillon realises he loves and wants Kit forever but she is still caught up in her hate and anger to him.
That is until they try and save her grandmother and instead get snowed in. Dillon has a really tough road ahead of him in making Kit see him as the man that wants forever. They have an extremely andysty past and I did not blame Kit in the least. On the other hand Dillon really loved her and I was totally rooting for him to win Kit.
This was a really wonderful story and I hated that it ended. Beyond that it was perfection. I loved Kit and Dillon and their relationship.
Very fun light romance that will be popular with our patrons , 3 1/2 stars
This book might just be my favorite of the series. Since meeting Kit & Dillon in the first book I have been looking forward to their story and it definitely did not disappoint. Both are strong-minded, driven individuals and they really fed off of each other. Kit gets stuck in her head a lot overthinking everything and Dillon is an in the moment kind of guy. I liked here characters when they were fighting but wow they were great together. And when they got together it was HOT! Definitely don't want to miss this book!
This was a very fun frenemies-to-lovers romance. Dillon and Kit have been competing against each other, while occasionally succumbing to the sexual attraction between them, since third grade. They’re both smart, over-achievers who drive each other to achieve more because they just can’t stand losing to the other.
This is the third book in Nicholas’s series about romance in a small Nebraska town, Chance, which has endured more tornadoes than any other town in the U.S. The townspeople have come together to help each other and it’s not so surprising that these two town leaders will eventually come together realizing that there is so much more between them than the desire to one-up the other.
What I liked about this book is that the two main characters know each other so well. I’m a little tired of romance novels in which the hero and heroine feel an immediate sexual attraction and somehow fall in love in just a couple of days. Dillon and Kit realize that they know each other better than anyone else. And what has separated them in the past was an unreasoning fear that they couldn’t truly love each other. Once they got over themselves, they can see that they were meant for each other and make each other better. They love each other for personal characteristics, not just lust, though that is there also.
Dillon seems the perfect guy who exists only in romance novels. He deserves his HEA and Kit is the woman who matches him.
I was given a free ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't realize this was the third in a series when I picked this up, but it was a great stand alone as well. I really enjoyed the story of Kit and Dillon. I am finding I like a male hero who falls hard, and a female heroine who resists not because she is strong and needs to find a place where she can both be in love and be herself. This is an excellent example of the kind of book that makes me happy. Enough humor to make me smile, strong characters who make me fall for them and an ending that ties it all up without too much neatness. Great book. Definitely going to be looking for more from this author.
Turned Up was a fun rivals-to-lovers romance with amazing characters and the sexiest of the romances in the Taking Chances series.
Kit Derby and Dillon Alexander have been rivals since the third grade when Dillon became the first person to beat Kit at anything. Since then, the two compete at everything and are always pushing each other to be better. Now both back in their hometown, they work in the same hospital while continuing to try and one up each other. When the two are trapped alone together by a blizzard overnight, they must face the feelings they’ve been denying for years and decide where their relationship will go once they’re back in the real world.
I really enjoyed the push-pull of Dillon and Kit’s relationship and the level of banter was excellent. Enemies or rivals to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and it’s so well done in Turned Up. When Dillon and Kit are in public they bicker a lot, but then as soon as they’re alone they jump each other. There’s a ton of heat in their relationship and I think of the three romances theirs definitely included the most sex scenes. However, there is more to their relationship than just the physical and I like how supportive of each other they were and how much they actually talked about stuff.
Roughly half of this book takes place with the characters snowed in during a blizzard, so there’s a lot of time where it’s just the two of them. It was nice getting to see how the characters interacted inside that bubble and how they adjusted to the change in their relationship after they’re back in everyday life. I loved how much we got to see of the couples from the first two books in this series. The author has tied the lives of these six people together very well and I really enjoyed their friendships.
Overall, Turned Up was an excellent continuation of the Taking Chances series and I definitely recommend this series to anyone looking for some fun contemporary reads.
I loved this story. Quick read for the beach of a lazy day at home. The story opens up with the local psychiatrist delivery a baby on the snowy freeway during a blizzard. Dillon the newest ER / Hospital doctor pulls up to the scene and is shocked to find his school nemesis in the backseat of the car holding the new baby. The two of the doctors have battled each other in school and in life. Dillon has secretly been in love with Kit since they were teens, and she has wanted to be involved with him as well.. Though they both want the same thing they are afraid it won't last. Kit and Dillon go out to her grandmother's home to rescue her from the blizzard - to find out that she was already in town. The two soon discover that it is too late to travel back to town in the white out conditions. The decide to settle in and wait the storm out. I will not spoil the ending... it is a very cute story.
This is the first book I've read from this author and I enjoyed it a lot. I loved the story, the storyline and the characters. Dillon and Kit were the perfect characters in their own way, or more like perfect for each other, they just didn't realize it. I definitely enjoyed their back and forth banter and I smiled a lot while reading this story. There was never a dull moment and I truly enjoyed it from the beginning to the very end. It definitely makes me want to read more books from this author and I'm excited to see what other characters and books I fall in love with. I highly recommend this book to readers who are looking for a fantastic and light romance read.
After reading the two previous books in this series, I was thrilled for Kit and Dillon's story. These two define the reaction between oil and water- or so we thought.
Always full of snark and angst- these two have succumbed to their deep passion which fuels their arguments on a few occasions that were fueled by drama and adrenaline. But when they are forced to stay together instead of being able to flee after their latest encounter Dillon and Kit find themselves analyzing what exactly their attraction is. Walking down memory lane with them was sweet yet very sad. There are tragedies that have defined their lives and their relationship and it will take a lot to move past those to focus on a possible future together.
But when they do allow themselves to be together they soon discover it creates such a significant change in their lives and personalities that they just might not be able to be together. Once strong and opinionated, Kit soon finds herself putty in not on Dillon's hands but in his ideas which she usually argued and fought against. Same for Dillon. Will they be able to change so drastically and lose who they are for the sake of a relationship- is it worth it?
These two are just great together and fit perfectly with the other couples. Great story.!
Was not very interested in the book. Did not finish, was really expecting more from this author. This book just didn't sit well with me. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read and review your novel.
This is the 3rd installement of the Taking chances series and in my opinion one of the best. We have caught glimpses of Kitt and Dillion in books one and two and felt the "tension" so it was with anticipation that I started this book while on vacation. It did not last, I read it in a few hours, could not put it down it was that engrossing. I liked how Dillon was self aware and was always willing to grow (as described early on in the book when Kit sees him go into Sara's room to improve his bedside manner); I liked how they were both aware from the start how explosive their attraction was, and in this regard there weren't any games (except chutes and ladders) how quickly he could melt her panties! That he looked at her and saw forever. ! That it took a tornado and a blizzard to figure it out but thank god he did so before they had a major flood! I loved how they make each stronger and complement each other so much; loved the wisdom their friends impart, loved their love of their community....pretty much loved everything.
This is the first book in this series that I have read and I really loved it! Dillion and Kit are fun and sexy and also frustrating! Whoever came up with the "opposites attract" saying, I am sure were thinking of this couple! I really enjoyed the dialog between these two characters and I it kept me on my toes because I never was sure what was going to come out of either of their mouths. Looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series!
