Good science writing mixed in with uninteresting enigmas
I have mixed feelings about his book. Alan Baker, when he is writing about science, is a good science writer and his stuff is fun to read. But then after a great description of a subject in science, he will veer off and discuss some related but fringe enigmas that I feel are not of general scientific interest. Indeed, they are almost tabloid-worthy. I think there are more interesting unsolved scientific issues that Baker could have written about. And when he writes about the occult, then he loses me completely. However, I gave the book three stars on the strength of Baker’s science writing.

I was really looking forward to reading his book as I love to learn new things, and science is always a fascination. However, the synopsis promised a book written in a clear, informative, and entertaining style. Although informative, I did find the text quite heavy at times, and certainly not entertaining enough to enjoy. It felt like reading a school text book rather than a book to read for enjoyment and pleasure. For those with a specific interest in science, I think this would definitely be of interest. But for the layman such as me, who is not scientifically-minded, this is a little bit too much like hard work unfortunately.
