What a great debut book from Phoebe Morgan! Although I did work out quite quickly who was the main protagonist in the book (I am not sure the author really meant to hide it) it did not spoil my enjoyment in any way. There are also enough other twists in the book and plot lines which could do either way to keep the reader on their toes and certainly kept me entertained and wanting me to continue to read more and more.
I dashed through the book not wanting to put it down.
Great first book can’t wait for the next one from Ms Morgan.
The Doll House is an intriguing psychological thriller that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. Sisters Ashley and Corinne couldn't be more different – except for their love of the doll house given to them as children by their recently deceased father. In addition to the story, told in separate parts by Ashley and Corinne, there's also the point of view of a mysterious, unknown stranger. Ashley has three children, while Corinne is undergoing IVF treatments in order to get pregnant. Then, pieces of the dollhouse keep showing up at Corinne's home. Where are they coming from and what do they mean? Ashley suspects her husband of having an affair, and her children aren't acting right. Plus, someone is watching . . .
Corinne has been on edge since her father died, almost a year ago. She and her husband Dominic have been trying for a baby since before that, and after three unsuccessful IVFs, they both feel exhausted. And then, Corinne finds a small chimney in her house, identical to the one from her doll house her dad built. It's odd and some sort of sign, but Corinne doesn't know what of. Strange things start happening in her life and in Ashley's, her sister, and Corinne starts to get a feeling that someone has been watching them, for a long time.
The Doll House is a gripping, creepy novel. It keeps the reader in the dark for most of it of what is exactly going on and how things are connected, leaving glimpses of clues and flashbacks from time to time. As the reader, I was between very intrigued and annoyed at how long it took for things to get revealed - I'd guessed most of the plot by halfway through the book, including who was behind it. Which is why I can't give this novel 5 stars.
Apart from that, it was a very interesting read! I loved the family's story (I am a sucker for a family drama) and how different Corinne's and Ashley's lives were. I was irked by how easily everyone dismisses the suspicions of the main character about the weird things going on, but that is quite common in thrillers, so I let it slide. But the husband-who-is-loving-but-doesn't-believe-the-wife-who's-clearly-terrified is a bit overused by now. The plot also felt a little overdone, which made it predictable. The big twist wasn't shocking as much as exasperating.
Morgan's writing is very good and had a nice mixture of description, introspection and giving me an easy time to connect to the characters. I was very emotionally invested on the novel!
It also felt to me that, if everyone was more open and truthful and trusting to each other, the novel would've been finished a long time ago. So it did feel like it dragged on sometimes. But the ending...
The ending left me open-mouthed and hungry for more, but at the same time satisfied. It made me give an extra solid star more. All in all, a very entertaining, creepy novel!
Dark, creepy, and sinister.
That's how I like a good, psychological thriller.
The Doll House is a bit family drama with a lot of dark, twisty elements.
I found Corinne to be weak and Ashley much more likable. The third voice? Very secretive and unnerving.
Grab it. It's a great debut.
THE DOLL HOUSE, by Phoebe Morgan was more of a "thriller" with psychological horror elements thrown in. While this is not necessarily a bad thing at all, I went into this book expecting more of a "horror" element. In that respect I was disappointed.
The writing style was impressive for a debut, but I felt that many of the issues weren't "fully resolved" by the end. Overall, I consider this novel above average, and would certainly give another book by this author a try.
There were a couple of interesting elements but overall it was a typical psychological thriller. I found there were several loose ends also, which is maddening to me.
Disappointing, predictable, unnecessarily overwrought. Was hoping the GoodReads reviews were right. But they weren't. Read it only if you like your thrillers ho-hum.
Creepy in a good way! I had my suspicions from the beginning about what was going on but still enjoyed it thoroughly. I liked everything that was going on. Corinne felt like she was going crazy, and the not knowing kept me turning the pages to learn more. Certainly interesting and suspenseful. I would love to read what this author writes next.
I enjoy my reading but that's not really what I expected. I want to be scared and I don"t find this sensation. But I love the story so good reading but not very scary.
Unfortunately, this book was not for me. I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters and I just found I couldn't sit down and get lost in the story like I wanted to. I do see where others, especially fans of mystery/thriller books, would enjoy this book and would definitely recommend this to fans of those genres.
Well, the book failed to surprise me. I thought it would be more gripping, I found myself struggling to bring myself to read further. The most edgy part for me was the very last sentence. The plot used a lot of clichés, which I personally don't like. Like, no one's mobile works when they try to reach each other, because there's no signal (in London? Seriously?) or they simply don't pick up, because they don't notice it rings. Ha. And I feel like some of the plot isn't solved, like there's no explanation for why Dominic had to write that piece of the Carlington House. What where Allison's motives to send him - a blackmail, probably? By who and why and with what? Why was it necessary for Dominic to bring Corinne along for his visit? If Erin (and June) wanted revenge, and Erin had a knife, why didn't she killed them all instead of roping them up and hurting them? She had the chance to finish, why didn't she do it? So I still have questions.
On the bright side: It's easy to like the characters, they're everyday people, with everyday problems, it's like it can happen to anyone. The writing is fine, there's potential in Ms Morgan's work. It's an alright debut novel, I'm sure her future works will be better.
There is a slow, ramping unease about this book. Corrine and Ashley are sisters coming to terms with the loss of their beloved architect father a year ago. The usual family issues abound - tearaways teens, fertility issues and suspicions of affairs, but underneath it all bubbles a creepy series of events. Corinne thinks she is imagining it at first - pieces that look like they're from her childhood doll house start to appear in her workplace and at home. Ashley receives mysterious phone calls; silent at first and then accompanied by a high cackling laughter. The thing I liked about this thriller was that everything wasn't cosily prevented just in time. There is a genuinely sinister menace out there and it intends real harm. Recommended.
Three and a half stars.
Two spoilt sisters, Ashley and Corrine, living in a large house, wanting for nothing. Years later peculiar things start happening, things from the past appear, other stuff disappears - how is this possible? Who knows so much about their lives? It's a good debut but I wasn't too enamoured with the main characters. Corrine was too needy and whined too much so much so I don't know how her boyfriend put up with her! Ashley was just as irritating and seemed a bit slow on the uptake. It was a bit on the predictable side too and it was quite obvious from early on as to how it would all pan out. Intriguing enough to read other books by this author and thrilling enough to keep turning the pages.
The original synopsis of this story did not mention Ashley at all, so I went into this story thinking it would only be about Corinne. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this would be about both sisters. The story is told in their alternating voices, with brief interjections from Dominic, as well as moments from the past told in the voice of an unknown character. Of course, the unknown person was the most intriguing part of the story, and I was wondering the entire time who it could be. I found Ashley's perspective to be a lot more interesting than Corinne; I also liked her better as a character, even though not much was really happening on her end as compared to Corinne. But to be honest, I didn't really care much about what was happening with either one of them. There just wasn't enough emotional connection or depth to them to get me interested; every time I felt I was connecting, the story would hurry on and it would be lost. I had pretty much guessed the ending of the story so there wasn't too much of a thrill there. However, I WAS surprised by the identity of the unknown character; it wasn't the person I was expecting it to be. For the most part, this story was lackluster, and I was just trying to get to the end to see if I was right or not. The ending was the only interesting part of the novel, but it ended in such a cliffhanger way that I wonder if there will be a sequel. Overall, this was an okay thriller with characters I didn't really care about, and not enough thrill to keep me enthralled. I'm giving this a 2/5 stars.
A twisted psychological thriller mixed with family drama. The story kept me reading just that one more chapter. Excellent debut novel.
Creepy, atmospheric and shocking! I didn't know whether Corinne was losing her mind, whether something more insidious was going on, or what! The ending was great!
A great read, had me gripped from start to finish with the suspense on who was playing ticks on what seemed a perfect family. I literally couldn't put it down towards the end! Eager to get the answers. Would definitely read a follow on if there were to be one.
The Doll House is a suspense, thriller novel. I found the book a bit boring in the beginning: but i was determined to keep going as i have heard very good reviews. I wasn't disappointed. In the end i wanted another book. It needs to continue- it has to. There is no cliffhanger; but i want a follow up.
An awesome read
