This is #3 in the D.I. Luc Callanach series by Helen Fields set in Edinburgh. I can't see DCI Begbie without imagining Begbie from Trainspotters
This time we find Ava and Luc working on a serial killer (nothing new there) and as if that's not enough their boss and mentor DCI Begbie has apparently committed suicide. Right from the get go they don't believe it and are absolutely determined to prove it. I like that each member in the team has their own foibles and niche with the team and it is utilised to ensure a speedy result in both enquiries.
In a change from my normal thoughts to enjoy #perfectdeath it's not essential to read the others you need to read the others to get up to speed on everyone but they are definitely worth a read.
Thanks to Ms. Fields, #Netgalley and Avon Books .All opinions are mine and mine alone
Thanks netgalley for this book, I found it hiding on my kindle and as I love the series with D..I.Luc Callanach who really sounds terribly handsome and French with it.
Yes loved this book as I have loved all of these books by Helen Fields.
This one was very different from her other books, the gangsters were more violent than the murderer.
Oops have I given too much away.
Awesome book by Helen Sarah Fields. I can't wait to get my hands on her previous books in this series.
Thanks to netgalley for the ARC of a prolific author. I wouldn't have necessarily read anything by this author, but due to netgalley I have a new favorite author!
This is the third book in the DI Callanach series, and even though I haven't read anything of Helen's before, I don't think I lost too much reference to the previous books. In this book Callanach and Ava have to investigate the apparent suicide of their old mentor, DCI Begbie, as well as trying to catch a serial killer who uses poison to kill his victims.
This was really a thrilling read, and I enjoyed each and every moment of it. After this one, I am reading Perfect Silence, and then I will be reading the previous' books!!
Highly, highly recommended.
Book 3 in this series was a superb read, a gripping thriller to keep you on the edge of your seat. I'm loving the characters in this series and enjoying getting to know about them.
Callaghan and Turner are back, and this time they have a serial killer that need's catching. It isn't going to be easy and straight forward, because lets face it, we wouldn't want to read if they solved the case easily, there would be nothing to get stuck into.
Helen fields certainly has a knack of writing a book that will grip you, keep hold of you and spit you out panting for breath by the end of it.
I have only just realised I read book 1 then this one, I seem to have somehow missed book 2 out.
I love how while the books are serious, and dark there is also an element of humour with the characters personalities. There are a few characters that are really growing on me the more I get to know them.
I love reading a bloody good crime series and this is certainly turning out to be one those. I have no problems what so ever recommending this book. If you need a new series then this would be a perfect one for you to try.
I feel very privileged to have received this book as an ARC from Netgalley and even more so that I also have book 3 that I can start right away.
The third installment in the DI Luc Callanach & DCI Ava Turner series... and it doesnt disappoint!
I think these are my current favorite crme fighting duo at the moment and i look forward to reading more in the future.
I wish I had read the series so that the references to things that are clearly from other books and that may have meant I enjoyed it more. However I didn’t and whilst I loved the original method of murder and thought the author had done a good amount of research I never felt on edge or shocked.
This is the third book in the DI Callanach story but the first one I have read. I cannot wait to read the rest! The main characters are DI Callanach (a detective based in Edinburgh with a French background) and his superior DCI Ava Turner. This story starts with the death of a young girl that may be a murder or a misadventure. It is followed by the death of a charity manager in similar circumstances. But at the same time their retired boss is also found deceased, is it suicide or murder? Both of these stories run along together.
I enjoyed the characters. We learn a bit about DI Callanachs background when his mother appears. I also like DS Lively and the relationship between them all and the Superintendent Overbeck. I am looking forward to reading more.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review
This is the first in the series I have read and thus I have come to the party a bit late. I loved this book with two stories running along side each other that kept it fresh and interesting. You end up really caring about the characters and I suspect everyone has a favourite as they all have their own quirks.
This is a great read and I will definitely be reading the previous books in the series.
Perfect death by Helen fields
Callanach and Turner are back. This time they have to catch a killer who watches his victims from afar. Can they catch him?
A good read. Very cleverly written. Couldn't guess who it was. 5*.
A really gripping book. Excellent page turner that I couldn’t put down.
This is one of a series about a police force set in Scotland. As this is not the first in the series, you somehow feel you have missed out on some of the interaction being played out between the cops involved. At the end, you will also realise that their story has not concluded. However this is not a criticism and indeed the main criminal tale is complete and comes to a rather rapid conclusion. Be warned it is gruesome towards the finale! There are some interesting ideas into how to bring about death as well as some more usual beatings and use of weapons. To my mind, as can often be the case, I found after rather a long read, this book came to a fairly abrupt end which left me slightly disappointed.
I really like this series. This book is action packed and definitely a page turner. It tackles corruption within the police and has you pondering how well you really know someone. A well thought out, and well put together story. I would definitely recommend this book and I look forward to the next one in the series.
Some people thrive on other people’s grief.
Unknown to DI Luc Callanach and DCI Ava Turner someone is killing people making it look like accidents or suicides. He then inserts himself into the families, so he can feed on their grief and anguish.
Meanwhile, a respected police officer is found dead in his car. It’s apparently a suicide, but DCI Turner is devastated and cannot believe he would do this, but soon finds out her trusted friend was not as clean as she thought. She sets out to investigate his misdeeds to save his widow from even more grief and despair.
This is the first book I have read in the Luc Callanach series, but they seem to be stand-alone stories. I enjoyed this book although at times there was too much going on and it was difficult to keep all the threads together. I personally feel it would have been better if the two stories had a book of their own and the characters were expanded a little more.
All in all, the book was very good and very well written. Some of the characters like DCI Turner are not very likeable but the minor characters gave the book a little light-heartedness.
I would read another of this series if I am given it to review but I don’t think I would buy it.

Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of the book to review.
A spooky and sinister tale about a murderer who is very individualistic. He is looking to provide the Perfect Death for his victims and each attempt brings him closer to his aim. And each victim is chosen for very specific reasons that make sense to him but not necessarily - at least in the beginning - to the police targetted with his capture.
The setting, Edinburgh, adds to the atmosphere as we start on Arthur's Mount - which is credited with a lot of spooky happenings.
I thought the portrayal of the police especially Callanach were good and having read Helen Fields before, I was not disappointed.
I loved the characters and the setting (I am a big fan of books set in Scotland). The plot for the book was superb, the writing style was spot on for the genre with just the right amount of detail for me, it was gritty, it gripped me and I loved it.
Personally I do think you need to have read the books in order to get the most out of the book (this is the third book in the series and the previous two are also very, very good).
For me this is one of the best crime series that is out and available at the moment - I really, really enjoyed it and am looking forward to book 4!! If you want a treat - get this book!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books, UK and Helen Fields for this ARC of Perfect Death in return for my honest review.
I have enjoyed novels by this author before so was pleased to receive my ARC. This did not disappoint at all.
DI Luc Callaghan and newly promoted DCI Ava Turner become involved with a sadistic killer who is devious and clever. He can hide his murders by the use of sophisticated drugs and the ability to disappear into the shadows.
Although written in the third person there are several episodes written in the viewpoint of the murderer. Cleverly constructed with good character portrayals I still felt there was a lack of surprise and excitement.
Having said all of that I enjoyed it. Recommended.
Helen Fields is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. Book 3 in the Luc Callanach series and it goes from strength to strength. This book is about corruption and loyalty within the police and the enduring power of friendship. Full of twists and turns, new characters and insight into the private lives of the main characters. Another winner from Helen Fields. Thanks to Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Amazon, Goodreads and Facebook.
Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read this. I’m a big fan of this author anyway so I jumped at this one! I’ve waited for this one. Hasn’t disappointed me either. Absolutely brilliant again. I love Ava and Luc’s characters and their relationship. I don’t even need to go into the storyline, trust me you need to read this. Although now I have another wait before I get the next instalment!
A brilliant and thrilling third book in the DI Luc Callanach series. I could barely turn the pages fast enough the last quarter of the book as the different threads started to come together and the stakes rose and rose. I adore this series and this book has not failed to deliver.
Fields has written a fabulous, fully rounded and complex character in Luc Callanach and his relationship with his now DCI Ava Turner is complicated, though only because of the people involved. This does however, make for great reading. You want to bang their heads together. Whether they will or won't remains to be seen, but I will be there to enjoy the ride as long as it's there for me to go along with.
I wonder how fast Fields can write...
