To start off with all I can say is wow what an opening it left me feeling claustrophobic along with finding myself sat bolt upright on the edge of the sofa. It was a brilliant way of grabbing my attention and I may have had to put on a few lights in my house.
So one of my favourite characters in any series has to be Robyn Carter and this is down to Carol Wyer's writing she has created a character with flaws but also a wonderfully likeable character. Robyn is tenacious, strong and will go that extra mile to solve her cases because of this she isn't perfect and on occasion makes mistakes. However I love that this gives a more realistic portrayal of Robyn's character and it makes the story even more engaging for me. Just like the other books in the series the reader is thrust into the investigation where we get to see the case progress. I always enjoy trying to put the clues together to try and figure it out. This is definitely half the fun for me and I love the dynamic of the whole team who all bring something different to the story. Now that we are on book three it really feels as if I know them by now along with all their quirks. Although there is still the odd surprise with the characters that kept me on my toes and leaving me even more intrigued to continue reading the series to find out more about them. As with all series it's recommended to start at the beginning but I will say that The Missing Girls can be read as a standalone. Mainly because just the right amount of important background information is given to get a feel for the characters. Then again you really are missing out on getting to know some brilliant characters and some truly creepy cases.
There are some shocking and as I said before on the edge of your seat situations that had me wishing I could read this book in one go. The killer is creepy, dark and devious which is definitely a great combination to have in a story. This book packs a powerful punch and it was only when I put the book down and got on with everyday things that I realised how much I wanted to pick The Missing Girls back up and find out how it would all end. I really have tried to be very vague about the plot as it is so worth reading it yourself to find out every little twisty moment that is contained in this book. There is only one thing left to say - I really, really need the next book asap!
Brilliant and compelling!
Five stars!
With thanks to Bookouture for my copy and to Kim for the invite to join the tour. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
The day has come I am sitting in front of the computer waiting on the announcement on Twitter from Bookouture. My heart is racing, waiting, anticipating. Finally, what I long for has arrived, The Missing Girls by Carol E. Wyer, is on NetGalley. I have joined the many others in the stampeded, praying the Bookouture Gods will descend with The Missing Girls to my inbox …………….. My prayers have been answered, with baited breath I opened my kindle and begin……
The Missing Girls by Carol E. Wyer is the third instalment in the DI Robyn Carter series and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. I would like to point out that this book can be read as a standalone, but would be better read as part of the series to help you better understand DI Robyn Carter. Carol just gets better and better with every book written, I’m in need of more of DI Carter and very soon.
The Missing Girls opens with a dramatic scene which wallops you between the eyes, your eyes get bigger the more you read, surely this can’t be happening. Amber has awoken in a darkened room, disorientated and alone, or is she. I can feel every emotion Amber is going through, fear, apprehension, impending doom and what ‘Deadly Intent’ has her capturer planned (sorry Carol a tiny plug for Sheryl Browne, please forgive me).
A drugs bust uncovers a trunk in a storage unit, upon opening the trunk a body is discovered, its apparent its a young girl but who is she……. While investigating who the girl is another goes missing, are they linked and how, DI Carter and her team pull out all the stops to try and solve the murder. It’s a race against time are they dealing with a serial killer..
The personality and characteristics between each of the characters portrayed in The Missing Girls are very believable, I felt as though I knew them, like they were my long time friends. Carol made me feel at home with them, as part of a elite group which I held the key to as I read, they were fully immersed in my imagination and I had entered there world collaborating with them during the investigation.
I love the interaction between Carter and Shearer but is it too much to hope that at some point Carol will write a thriller where they will work together, go on Carol a special investigation, I can see it now. I shall wait and see what Carol manages to conjure up, it may be a special with Carter and Shearer or a standalone with Ross, ooooh that would be good too!
If you fancy a dark and compelling read which will send your brain into overdrive, leave you with an itch you can’t scratch, well The Missing Girls by Carol E. Wyer is the heart-stopping thriller that’s a must read just for you.
There was only one thing that disappointed me was the realisation that the book was coming to an end. I tried to stop it, sparks flew as I skidded to a halt, it couldn’t end, I wanted to know, I needed to know, I teetered on the edge of this cliff-hanger, fingernails gripping tightly, what’s coming next………..Carol can’t you tell us?
Thank you to Bookouture, Carol E. Wyer and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of The Missing Girls in exchange for an honest review.
Book 3 in the DI Robyn Carter series doesn't slow down in the slightest. Carol Wyer opens up each book with a prologue that just sucks you right in. No punches held back in her stories - NOPE! We are opened with a girl waking up disoriented in a dark room, held captive and unsure why. Dun dun dun!!! Then in a drug bust turned dead body found, a young girl is found in a trunk, wrapped in plastic and the case begins.
Bringing back the entire cast, we get Ross, Carter's cousin, on a missing dog case that turns into a missing persons report. Carter has to deal with her new boss, Flint, and he clearly is not a fan of hers. Maybe it's her unconventional ways... her acting on instinct rather than following proper procedure. Either way, she has something to prove now. With the help of Anna, Matt, Mitz, etc.. (and do we see some further relationship ties happening here too?? 😉), we really start seeing how they play off each other and have their roles in each case. Readers also get even more involved in Carter's personal life and her relationship with her ex-fiancee's, Davies, daughter. As they have mourned the passing of Davies, they have continued to strengthen their bond as Carter stays active in Amelie's life.
This book delves into bullying, which we all know is a huge issue in this day and age. A highly relevant subject matter to touch upon. And quite frankly, if you read this series (and you SHOULD), I recommend you read the Letter from Carol at the end as she takes her real life experiences and uses those for her stories. For example, in Secrets of the Dead (book 2) she uses her real life stalker experience. It's quite interesting and makes me love her books even more.
To sum up, just read this series. And while they can be read as stand alones, I recommend starting from the beginning so you can get the full feel of each character as they grow. Especially since this book left quite the cliffhanger! 😲
This is the third book in Wyer’s Robyn Carter series, I absolutely loved the first two books, Little Girl Lost and Secrets of the Dead and I think it’s safe to say this is my favorite book thus far. It’s clear to me that this is the type of series that gets better with each book, this is right up there with two of my other beloved Bookouture series, Robert Bryndza’s Erika Foster and Angela Marsons Kim Stone. If by chance you’re a fan of those two and haven’t read this I highly recommend doing so!
Per usual this opens with a gripping prologue that instantly grabs your attention, a young girl wakes up disoriented and terribly scared and is quickly aware she’s in grave danger when she realizes she’s being held captive by a deranged individual. Throughout the book there are several chapters from the young girls who are being captured and killed that were chilling and menacing and brought that sense of darkness and danger to the story.
It was so great to catch up with Robyn and her team again, she has a new supervisor now, Flint and it’s been a huge adjustment for her. The rest of the team are still intact and they’re all really growing on me, I still have a soft spot for Anna and Matt and Mitz is a really lovely man. Wyer delves even deeper into Robyn’s past, especially her relationship with Davies which is so nice as it shows her softer side and just adds to the solid characterization that’s already been established. There’s also more detailing her relationship with Davies daughter, Amelie and I love their special bond.
Once again there is the same intricate plotting and meticulous attention to detail here, there were so many various threads that I had no clue how they would all eventually tie together. There was an onslaught of twists and turns as Robyn raced to catch a killer before he could strike again and the pacing is relentless and breathless. This hit on some very current issues with a cyber bullying angle that is every parents worst nightmare, it is insanely important to monitor teenagers social media usage.
This was already a five star read for me before the last chapter and then Wyer threw a gigantic curveball that knocked everything on it’s head. While everything with the current case was wrapped up nicely things in Robyn’s personal life were sent into a complete tailspin, talk about one hell of a cliffhanger ending!! I am desperate to get my hands on book four now and cannot wait to see what happens next.
Holy freaking hell what a book…I am still trying to compose myself after devouring this book in one afternoon! Well where do I start….First of all I have to say that Carol moving over to the dark side was the best thing she could of done. After reading Little Girl Lost which is the first one in the Robyn Carter series I was totally blown away. Now three books later I am totally blown away three times over! she doesn't take no prisoners in this latest installment.
This story starts off with a chapter and a half straight away where I am having an OMG moment. Describing one dark and pulse racing scene, talk about gritty and gripping. Carol certainly knows how to start the story off with a bang.
Flicking between scenes of the victim, police procedure and pathology descriptions that will make the hairs on your neck stand up. Carol weaves one electrifying story where we follow Robyn on the hunt for a killer after a body of a girl is found in a Midlands storage unit. With another girl that goes missing can Robyn find this twisted killer before it's too late?
I love that it is in set in places that I know. but for those of you that don’t Carol has no problem transporting you there with her descriptions. I absolutely love her style of writing you can feel the emotion and tension with each character throughout the story.
I have to say Robyn is one of my favourite Detectives and that ending….wowsers I cannot wait to see what's in store for her in the next book.
The Missing Girls is one fast paced, jaw dropping read that is without a doubt Carol’s best book to date. And has just hit my top reads of 2017. I cannot recommend enough giving it 5 massive stars.
If Carol Wyer writes it, I want to read it. No one can grab me from the opening chapter the way she does and I was immediately hooked after reading the first few pages of her latest installment in the Detective Robyn Carter series. All our favorite characters are back in this gripping, binge worthy read and I still haven't recovered from the bomb she dropped in the last few pages. (Why Carol WHY?!!! I am dying over your cliffhanger). 😱 In The Missing Girls, Robyn is trying to catch an elusive killer who is murdering beautiful young girls and leaving behind very little clues. This book ticked all my boxes: creepy killer vibes ✔️ informative police procedure ✔️ tense, heart pounding scenes ✔️ and Carol brilliantly weaved the dark side of social media throughout the entire plot of this book.
One of the many reasons I love Carol's writing is because it is completely realistic. How many times do we see in the news stories of girls being horribly bullied online? Or girls falling victims to predators who set up fake profiles to prey on the vulnerable and innocent? Carol takes this premise and runs with it and the result is a frightening, spine tingling, jaw dropping thriller that will leave you breathless and begging for more. Book 4 comes out in December and I CAN NOT WAIT.
Usually my reviews consist of my interpretation of the storyline, whether I disliked any of the characters, which character(s) I adored...and so on. However, I am not going to do it that way today. Nope! I could spend ages doing a very detailed review, end up repeating myself, as well as trying my hardest not to give any of Carol Wyer's hard work away. Not that I usually do, granted - but still.
So, what IS TWG going to say about 'The Missing Girls'?
Easy;
THIS BOOK IS CAROL WYER'S BEST YET!!!! I have no idea how she does it, but she does and she completely nails it every single time. 'The Missing Girls' has such a gripping, intense, and highly shockable storyline which is set you make the hairs on your arms stand to attention for the entire duration. And yes, I am speaking from experience! Detective Robyn Carter has got to be one of my all-time favourite fictional Detectives because of her fiestiness obviously, but also the fact that she is relatable and, funnily enough, human!
Even though several parts of the storyline made me wish I hadn't eaten my lunch beforehand, I JUST managed to keep my food where it belonged (safely in my stomach) whilst the storyline's incredibility factor went up a notch because of that! Yes folks, the fact I felt incredibly nauseous made me enjoy the novel even more. I'm weird, I know.
This, ladies and gents, is how a book should be written. This, is exactly the type of book you should read when you want to feel so many things in such a space of time. Granted fear, nausea and shock aren't the best feelings to have, but when you're faced with a storyline as complex and gritty as Carol Wyer's 'The Missing Girls', it is EXACTLY the reaction you need to have.
Carol Wyer is a phenomenal writer. If you don't know that already, you are seriously missing out on some fantastic novels. I admit I was a bit apprehensive of the authors genre move to start with, but I really do think it's the best move she could have made.
Absolutely flipping genius.
Thanks to Bookouture for the advanced ebook copy in exchange for my honest review!
When Carol Wyer comes out with another DI Robyn Carter story I have to read it! Books one and two (LITTLE GIRL LOST and SECRETS OF THE DEAD) were amazing and this one was no different! "Long shadows danced on the tin walls. Inside the trunk lay Carrie Miller, wrapped in plastic, arms folded across her ribcage, lips sealed tight forever..." How could I NOT read this??
Detective Robyn Carter finds herself in the middle of another serial killer case. A girl's body is found in a storage unit, but it is too decomposed for Carter to see any signs left by the killer.
Her leads go dry when no one can identify the woman that was renting the storage unit - just that she was in blue. But then another body is found. This time, Robyn finds distinct markings on the victim's skeleton, ones that match the scratches found on the first victim.
When another girl goes missing - someone close to Robyn - the pressure is on to find her before the killer strikes again! Will she be able to make it in time to save the life of someone she loves?
I seriously don't know how Carol Wyer does it! All three books in her series have been phenomenal and chilling to the bone. How she manages to come up with an even more twisted serial killer than her last is just beyond me. And the twists! One thing I've come to love about her books is that there are so many curve balls thrown at the reader. You think you know what's going on and then BAM! Nope, you were wrong the entire time.
In other words, you need to get the Detective Robyn Carter series, now. I hope there's a book four coming!
If you want a fast-paced serial killer thriller with crazy twists you won't see coming, then go get THE MISSING GIRLS by Carol Wyer!
I give this 5/5 stars!
WoW.....What a book. Carol Wyer's books only get better and better. This book series is a Must to read if you love crime series that has lots of cliffhangers. The plot is gruesome and kept me guessing right till the end of the book!
So we are back with Robyn Carter and the fab team A body of a young girl, is found in a trunk and Robyn and the team are working on the case. The story itself was fast and was very hard to put this book down.
So another 5* for this amazing book. Thank you for letting me read The Missing Girls (DI Robyn Carter, #3) by Carol E. Wyer. Looking forward to the next instalment.
Reviews written on Good reads and Amazon UK.
I was really eager to read the third book in the Robyn Carter series. I love her character and this latest investigation. I enjoyed every page and couldn't wait to read more and find out how they were going to find this killer.
You can just imagine yourself in the police investigation, looking at all the coloured post it notes- wondering what connections will be found and looking for clues with each suspect. At one point I was certain it was going to be one suspect- but we are led into other avenues and more chilling evidence comes into play. You are desperate for them to find the missing girls and for them to find out how the cases are linked.
Carol E Wyer produces the most spine tingling suspense- willing you to read just one more page even though you should be turning the lights off to get some sleep. How could you leave them in the middle of the case!
have loved this series! This is the first detective series I have ever read and I am thoroughly hooked! Robyn is such a strong character, I feel for her, I cheer for her and I kind of hero-worship her. I think women like her are amazing!
The story that is woven in The Missing Girls is so well written that I genuinely had no idea what the outcome would be. This is a proper Whodunnit and it will keep you guessing right to the very end. This is dark, twisted and quite sinister, all while still sending a positive message to the reader. I think that's quite rare in a thriller. This just proves to me what a brilliant writer Carol is.
The characters are all so real. Their stories all work together to make a great team of officers, they seem so normal that you can imagine them being in any police station. The evil behind the cases they solve is written so well that I actually got goosebumps. So creepy and believable...
If you haven't read this series yet, I suggest that you do. It is brilliant, dark, twisted and creepy but with a positive message woven into each book
This series keeps getting better and better. An easy 5 star from me.
A badly decomposed girls body is found in a trunk in a storage unit, after the unit intilly being searched in a drug bust.
Detective Robyn Carter and her team are brought in to investigate. The only clue they have is a mysterious woman dressed in blue who rented the unit and dropped off the trunk.
As the investigation ensues, there are little or no clues to what happened. That is until another girls body turns up. Having some similar cut wounds to the first victim, Robyn is convinced she has a serial killer on her hands but her superiors aren't so sure.
As another girl goes missing, this one someone Robyn knows, she faces a race against time to find this elusive serial killer as she tries to find a motive to the obvious pattern.
So after reading the first two in the series, I was really looking forward to reading this one. So much so I feared I may have built myself up for disappointment. Fear not though, this was everything I hoped for and more. A fantastic story based around bullying and revenge. Robyn and her team are now well established characters and are a joy to spend time with as ever. The book is very methodical with its storytelling and you really do feel part of an investigation.
The story itself is very strong and very well told, with just the right amount of red herrings to keep it believable. This series is just so readable. There's a flow to the writing and storytelling that's just a joy to read. A mixture of strong rounded characters, a great story and a story well told. There's quite a big cast of characters and unlike with other books, I didn't need to read back at any stage to refresh my memory of th character. I knew them all when they came back into the book. Vivid well written characters.
There's a little surprise towards the end of the book which some may be a bit iffy about but I loved it and sets up even more intruige for the rest of the series.
I don't have anything negative to say about this book. I just loved it from start to finish and felt thoroughly satisfied when I finished it.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and Carol E. Wyer for and ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third in the series and, although the main story is contained wholly within this book, Robyn is a bit of a complex character and so, to get the best from her and indeed other characters, it is better to start from book one and read in order.
We start with a young woman waking up in the dark. We watch as she fumbles round trying to make sense of where she is and why she is there. We then cut to the scene of a drugs raid at a storage warehouse headed up by Robyn's rival DI Shearer. The Police have been tipped off that there are drugs in one of three lockers. Things go a bit south and the Police are forced to break into all three. In one of them they find a trunk. In the trunk they find the body of a young woman. On investigation they discover it is the body of a girl who walked out of her home 6 months ago after a big row with her father. The case, now a murder, is reassigned to Robyn and she start to investigate. Then another body is found and Robyn is convinced the two could be related. Her bosses don't really agree and order her to drop it. Obviously she doesn't listen to them and does her own thing. When a third girl goes missing, Robyn tries to add this to her caseload, convinced of another connection. She gets the same response from the powers above and is ordered to just concentrate on getting a result from the original case. Again, she ignores this. Is she right that they are connected or is she just collecting cases, and if she is right, how and why and, more importantly, who and how many more?
Unlike the previous two books in the series, her cousin Ross doesn't play too big a part in this one. When he did eventually make an appearance, I thought the author was just paying the character lip service but I was wrong and he did make rather an interesting contribution in the end. Maybe the author has other plans for him in the future and wants to play him down in these books, and I can well understand that motivation. I for one wold love Ross to have his own book, maybe series.
Anyway, back to this book! So with Robyn defying her superiors, backed obviously by her team, she manages to follow the breadcrumbs and eventually get to the crux of it all and, when we got there, I was very impressed as it turned out to be quite a pertinent topic to the times in which we live, and also very well plotted. I'm trying not to include spoilers here so forgive my vagueness.
the characters were, as always, brilliantly described and, within their own contexts, behaved very credibly. I especially love the interaction and relationships between Robyn and Amelie and between Amelie and Florence her friend. In this book we see a softer side of Shearer too, somewhat unnerving as I am awaiting the catch, but could it just be him mellowing or has he got eyes for Robyn, who knows, I'll have to read the next book to find out, maybe!
Robyn's past still defines her somewhat but, along the way in the book, there are glimpses of maybe her coming out of that darkness. This all may change in the next one and that's all I am going to say about that!
All in all another winner from the author and a great addition to yet another series I have now put on my watch list. Hope it's not too long until book four.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
This book hots close to home for me. When I was a teen I was bullied a lot and even up to my 20s I had issues similar to what the girls in this book faced with cyber bullying.
I thought the book was well written but I had the murderer figured out early. It didn't change how ibfelt about the book as I loved seeing how rmthe detective found out who was behind the murders.
All in all this book was very good. I liked the plot and found the characters enthralling even if I couldn't say I liked all of them.
The Missing Girls is third book in the DI Robyn Carter series by Carol Wyer. It focuses on the world of cyber bullying and its tragic consequences.
I initially found this book slow to start but then it quickly gathered pace. I like the main character. She wants to get the job done but she's also compassionate.
I thought the plot line was well thought out and built gradually and with the ending of the book, I can't wait for book 4!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
The publishers billed this book as “an utterly gripping and darkly compelling detective thriller that will have fans of Robert Dugoni, Angela Marsons and James Patterson hooked from the very start” They are absolutely stop on – it is a brilliant book and you will not guess the ending!
I have read all of the books in this series now and loved each of them – this one is tense and it really does keep you on your toes, I loved the characters from the first two books and I love how the relationships are building and developing. The writing style is brilliant as always and having got to the end of the book much too quickly for my liking I now need to know ASAP what is going to happen and what Carol has planned for Robyn!! She leaves you on a real cliff-hanger!!!
Carol Wyer's books just keep getting better and better! While the lead character, Robyn Carter has a past, it really only makes an appearance through her stepdaughter.
Teenage girls with seemingly no connection are being killed. As the case progresses, Robyn's team is shown the world of cyber bullying and the havoc it can cause.
With a sudden awareness that this could happen to anyone, even her stepdaughter, Robyn must prevent another girl from being killed.
The surprise ending knocked the wind out of me! I'm on pins and needles waiting for the next one!
The Missing Girls is the third installment in the Robyn Carter series and I'm glad to say I liked this one better than the second book (not quite as much as the first one, though). I really like how Caroline Wyer plots her stories and the focus on the investigation as well as her relationship with her ex-boyfriend's daughter.
The case was quite intriguing and there were lots of suspects. I couldn't wait to know more. The story featured a good and satisfying ending, too. I like Robyn more and more as the books progress, but I also want to know her team a bit more. I feel like I don't know them as well as in other similar series.
On the other hand, and I know it's not anyone's fault, but if every review keeps saying that the ending is totally unexpected, for some people, it will be the opposite. I don't want to say anything more about that.
Ho-lee-cow. Awww. You know when you start reading a book, when there is just something in the very first page that captures your attention and draws you right in. Something that compels you onward and makes you keep reading just that one … more … page … That thing that makes you resent having to work, sleep, feed your family or your pets, interact with other humanoids … That. Yep. This book – that reaction. Marvellous.
Oh gosh this book is good, but it’s also a little hard to talk about because there is so much I want to say but I don’t want to drop any spoilers. What I can say is that this opens up on most of Robyn’s team being seconded to a drugs raid led by DI Shearer who Robyn has a rather, how shall we put it, strained relationship with. Only what they find in one of the potential storage units is not what they were expecting. Hidden away in an old suitcase is the body of a young woman, horribly disfigured and difficult to identify presenting Robyn with a problem – finding out who she is and who would want her dead. The investigation takes a sinister turn after the team discover that another teenager is missing, but is it the same perpetrator or just an unfortunate coincidence?
What it is, is bloody exciting stuff. That opening chapter; the tension, the way in which Carol Wyer sets out quite clearly what is at stake, taking just one short chapter to set up an overwhelming feeling of claustrophobia and dread. If it wasn’t so creepy I’d say it was simply magical. I had no idea who the girl was and yet I was invested. I had no idea who the mystery man was but I was intrigued. I had no idea what had happened to bring us so abruptly to this amazingly tension filled moment in time… but I was sure as hell going to find out.
Every chapter counted and there wasn’t one moment when I wasn’t poised, metaphorically gripping the edge of my seat, wanting to know what happens next. Even sensing some of the almost inevitable moments in the novel didn’t detract from the engagement. There was no smugness in knowing that you were right in what you surmised would happen. That was almost a given. What you couldn’t necessarily see was the who or the why, and there are genuinely moments in this book that will both shock and surprise you. The actions of the killer may be grim, but this book has, at it’s heart, a really tragic story, one from which there can be few, if any, happy endings.
I lave the character of Robyn Carter and Carol Wyer continues to allow her to grow and engage, making me even more invested in her as a character with every new book. She is still hurting from the loss of her fiancé, and trying hard to focus on the positive side of the time they had together, getting to know his no longer quite so young daughter, Amelie. She is tough and driven, with a great level of intuition, but she is also a great team player, as seen by her reluctant truce and almost fledgling friendship that evolves with Shearer throughout the course of the novel. What I like most is that while the tragedy that befell her informs her character, it doesn’t dominate or define it completely. She is totally likeable and relatable and you are rooting for her at every turn.
The team are all back and if anything, getting stronger. I love the way in which they play and bounce off one another. Their characters are all developing beautifully and even the good natured banter between them feels natural and genuine. The same can be said of Robyn and her cousin Ross. Even with Shearer amazingly enough. I guess no-one saw that coming.
And speaking of not seeing things coming … That ending. Oh my golly. What the heck does that mean for Robyn I wonder. I guess, with hindsight, I should perhaps have anticipated it, but I will happily admit to being totally blindsided. I am totally intrigued now and desperate to see where Carol Wyer takes it from here. When is the next book out again?
A thoroughly engrossing, heart stopping and vengeful read that kept me engrossed from the very first page. I loved it.
This review is written with thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my copy of The Missing Girls.
Whilst out on a drugs raid, DI Tom Shearer and PC Anna Shamash find a body in a disused warehouse. But it falls to DI Robyn Carter to lead a team to find the person who killed the young girl. She is struggling to find answers, and is feeling the pressure from her new boss, DCI Richard Flint, when another body is found and a third girl is reported missing. Can Robyn find the killer before it is too late?
I love DI Robyn Carter, and admire her ability to think outside the box, trust her instincts and be firm yet compassionate towards those with whom she works. These are characteristics that Wyer has maintained for Robyn throughout the series, but in The Missing Girls, Robyn faces a new challenge in the shape of her new boss. DCI Richard Flint is less accommodating to Robyn's gut feeling than his predecessor, and it is interesting to see how Robyn adapts to her new environment. There are also elements of the investigation that have an impact upon Robyn's personal life, and this allowed Wyer to bring out a new, more emotional side to Robyn.
At first, the investigation around which the plot of The Missing Girls is formed runs quite slowly, with Robyn and her team finding few answers in the first few days. However, despite the slower pace, I was fascinated by the plot. Alongside the main narrative, Wyer includes chapters from the perspective of the girls who are missing, allowing the reader to be one step ahead of the detectives at all times, meaning that we are aware of the heinous things the perpetrator has done to each girl and willing them to be brought to justice.
Wyer's suspects are very good at pulling the wool over Robyn's eyes, which means there are many twists along the way, particularly as the investigation takes a personal turn for Robyn. However, the biggest twist comes in the form of the cliffhanger on which The Missing Girls ends. It made my jaw drop, and has left me eagerly awaiting the fourth book in the series.
