I requested this book because it was written about the central characters of the musical Hamilton, yet this musical is one I have not yet managed to see.
It is fundamentally a historical love story in the YA genre. De la Cruz's description of the Shuyler sister's role in society at the time of the American War of Independence reminded me of my childhood reading of Little Women and has made me want to refresh my memory of that book.
As the author admits, the book is loosely based on the research she did about the title characters although there was factually little for her to find. Nonetheless, she wove a story of two very endearing characters which ensnares you into their world.

Cute enough fictional take on the romance between Eliza Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton. I feel that the author missed a lot of opportunities to explore and develop the personalities of the Schuyler sisters in their youth, before politics and a global stage beckoned, and the fact that chance was lost in favour of melodramatic and occasionally problematic romance was disappointing. I've read the Chernow biopic, and found it hard to reconcile the facts about the women with their younger fictional counterparts, and I expect that coloured my thoughts. It's an enjoyable book, but not a memorable one.

As someone who is very excited to be seeing the musical Hamilton later this year I was pleased to read this book about the imagined courtship of Alexander Hamiltion and Elizabeth Schuyler. It was a fun romp and just about managed to be a historical novel as well as modern YA novel, it has left me wanting to read more about the Hamilton family.
