The fourth friend by Joy Ellis.
JACKMAN & EVANS Book 3.
FOUR LOST FRIENDS. FOUR TASKS TO COMPLETE. ONE BIG MYSTERY LEFT.
I did enjoy this book. Great story and characters. Love this author. 5*.
I read this one a while ago and as this author's books usually are, it was an excellent thought provoking one.
It was hard hitting in some parts and even though it was a crime book, it was quite emotional.
Joy Ellis's books always astound me as the writing is so descriptive I can easily imagine myself to be there and end up with goosebumps.
An excellent book and strongly recommended as is the Jackman series.
This book is everything a psychological thriller/mystery should be! The author created characters that are well developed and a plot that moves along quickly! I found myself completely immersed in this one! Highly recommend!
Having not read any of the previous books in this series I wondered if I would struggle.
I did not need to worry this book grabbed me from the first page of the prologue and I just could not put it down.
Great characters and plenty of action just kept the pages turning.
Give me more.
When police detective Carter McLean is the only survivor of a plane crash, it puts him in a terrible situation. Four of his best friends died in the plane crash, each one left something unfinished. Can Carter overcome his guilt of surviving, and the flashbacks he keeps having to solve the cases that need to be done? DS Marie Evans is his only support person that he feels he can trust. DI Jackman is the lead person in the cases, but with the way McLean is acting, neither he or Evans are sure they can believe what he tells them. This is a very complicated story, but oh so worth reading to the very end! I loved every page of it! This is the third book in the Jackman and Evans series. You will really want to read these!!! I would like to thank Net Galley and Joffe Books for a copy of this story. I voluntarily reviewed the story and this is my own opinion of it.
This is book number 3 in the JACKMAN & EVANS series but it is also a very good standalone novel.
Well written and is a quick easy read.
I will now be putting Joy Ellis on my TBR list
This is book 3 in the Jackman and Evans series. I have read the previous 2 books but I think they work very well as stand alone.
The book is fast paced from the prologue to the epilogue I was turning page after page unable to put it down until I had read a little bit more…. It is very well written with developed characters and interesting, intriguing cases being investigated. I had several outcomes in my mind but none of them came close to what actually happened.
"When something terrible happened, there was always more than one victim. Disaster had a ripple effect., like a pebble thrown into a lake, drawing in many more people than those directly involved."
Detective Carter McLean and his four friends head to Amsterdam for a bachelors weekend when their plans go down and Carter is the lone survivor. But his friends visit him regularly, and their visits are accompanied by the smell of smoke. Carter has survivor's guilt and feels that he must complete a last task for each of his friends and as he does, they leave him, one by one. The fourth friend is Tom, whose wife Suzanne has been missing and presumed dead for eighteen months. When Carter returns to work, he becomes involved in her case and works to solve the mystery of her disappearance despite the reservations of his boss and his psychiatrist. The ending was sad and certainly a surprise. The cast of characters was well developed, especially Carter's partner Marie and his shrink Laura. I liked the way the different teams worked together instead of against each other while working on an unrelated stalker case as well. I have not read other books in the series, but will be adding them to the to be read mountain. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Fourth friend By Joy Ellis is the third book in the Jackman and Evans series. In this book a new character joins them in the shape of D.S.Carter Maclean.
D.S. Carter Maclean is the only survivor of a plane crash in which his four best friends sadly perished. He is now haunted by their appearances to him and finds a coping mechanism by completing a task for each of them until they finally disappear. What task has his friends set him to do? What does it involve?
D.I.Jackman and D.S.Evans and their team have two other investigations they have to solve. The first investigation is the disappearance of D.S. Macleans dead friends wife called Suzanne. The second investigation is the stalking and kidnap of superintendent Ruth Crookes niece Leah.
This fantastic book could be read as a standalone, but I would definitely recommend reading the series in order as the characters develop throughout and add so much to the enjoyment of the series. This book is full of twists and turns, with all the characters you can relate too. It had rather sad ending to the story of D.S.Maclean.
I cant wait for the next in the series as they just keep getting better and better.
Thanks to Joffe books for the opportunity to read this wonderful book.
A definite a big fat 5* from me.

It isn't long since I finally got around to reading Their Lost Daughters by Joy Ellis, which was book 2 in this series. As soon as I saw this was available on Netgalley I requested it. I couldn't wait to start this. I have read all of Joy Ellis' books so far, and have not been disappointed by any of them. It's fantastic to add another author to my MUS READ list. This also means that as soon as I saw it and requested it, I hadn't even read what it was about, and find it's a bit of a lucky dip when starting the book as I don't have a clue what it's going to be about.
I did however know the main characters from the 2 previous books, and i'm certainly growing to like them more and more.
Another book full of twists and turns that will keep you entertained the whole way through.
I really do look forward to reading more from this author. I'm not sure if Joy Ellis has a back log of books to produce or if she is just one hell of a writing machine the books seem to be coming thick and fast, so what ever it is you do Joy, Please carry on doing it.
This is a great thriller with an exciting storyline and plenty of twists. Highly recommend it.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Joy Ellis for the copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
Thank you Net Galley. A well written mystery that keeps you hooked. I did not feel I missed the sub-text by not having read the previous volumes in the series. I definitely am going to read them now!
Excellent book - Great characters and plot. I would highly recommend this book.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book
wow how do you come back from a plane crash that kills your best mates..and who now haunt you
plus one of the wives of his best mates has also disappeared...this made for an intriguing read that had many twists and turns and introduced you to many characters along the way, didnt suspect the ending until near the end and then it all played out in a dramatic style
Joy Ellis has come up with another cracker. Her novels are gritty and fast paced., enough to keep the reader on their toes until the last page. this crime novel will not disappoint and I'm sure that the reader will itching for the next one.
Glad to see another Jackman/Evans story. Author didn't disappoint and getting to know the characters a bit more added to the enjoyment. Another twisty, curvy ending that I didn't expect!
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
An intriguing read till the end, and then suddenly Carter's 'visions' involving his friends make complete sense. Makes you root for Carter just like Marie, Laura, and Jackson.
This is my first Joy Ellis and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The relationships Carter has with his colleagues and Silas are very nicely sketched out.
This is another fantastic crime fiction story from Joy Ellis – as soon as I saw that this book was being released I knew it was one that I needed to read and I certainly wasn’t disappointed – full of twists and turns I was hooked from the first few pages and knew it was going to be an excellent choice! I haven’t as yet read the previous books in this series and I didn’t feel at any detriment so I would say that this is fine to be read as a stand alone piece. The characters as with all of Joy’s books are believable and the writing style and flow is spot on as always – another 5 star read for me and highly recommended, I read it in just a few hours as I did not want to put it down!
This was a first from this author, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I found the characters interesting and the story flowed well. Would recommend this, and am looking to reading other novels from this author.
Detective Carter McLean suffers from survivor's guilt. While on a fun weekend with his four best friends, the plane crashes and kills everyone but himself. But that's not the last he sees of his friends.
His friends visit him. Realistically, Carter does not believe in ghosts, but he sees them, always accompanied by the smell of smoke. These were all young men and they all left things undone. Carter decides to honor them by completing something each of them has left undone.
His supervisors have him sitting a desk, not knowing how he will handle the stress of dealing with victims, suspects. Even some of his colleagues worry about him. He is still under the care of a psychiatrist.
Meanwhile, the police department doesn't shut down. Multiple cases are being handled by the team of detectives under DI Jackman. There is a missing woman who has ties to Carter. Another young woman has a stalker .. she happens to be the niece of one their supervisors.
I have read several books by this author ... and by far, this is the best ever. The premise is extraordinary .... and so well written. The characters are terrific, especially Carter. I felt such compassion for him and his circumstances. There is constant movement, as the cases are investigated and how all seem related in one way or another. The ending was so surprising. I had envisioned several scenarios ... but I never, ever saw this one coming.
Many, many thanks to the author and Joffee Books for the advanced digital copy of THE FOURTH FRIEND. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
