A pleasant enough story but with it being based at the start of WW2 unfortunately it wasn’t a book for me.
I had high hopes for this book seeing as Erica James' novels have always been a source of comfort for me, so I was expecting to be fully sucked into this story and potentially find a new favourite. Sadly that wasn't the case.
It started off strong for the first 10% or so and I was intrigued in the story and how the characters' lives and actions would unfurl but then I grew bored. I don't feel that all that much happened for the vast majority of the book and there were certain characters I just didn't care for. I wasn't entirely satisfied with the ending and was hoping for a different turn around for one of the characters in particular.
This isn't my favourite of her work but it isn't a terrible book either. I just don't think it was for me, personally, because I forgot when I picked it up that it was set at the start of WWII which isn't really my cup of tea sadly.
Another cracker from Erica. Love the past spin on it rather thsn then and now. Enjoyed the topic matter
Coming Home to Island House by Erica James is set in the summer of 1939 just before the start of World War II.
Romily Temple has just returned to Island House after travelling abroad to promote her latest book, before she left she married the love of her life Jack Devereux. On her return she finds Jack has fallen ill and he would like his estranged family to come together so he can make amends for his abandonment of them when they were children. Upon Jack’s death his family are given one week to sort out their differences with each other or they will forfeit their inheritance.
The story takes us through the first year of the war and the up and downs of the inhabitants of Island House from Romily who has to bring the family together to Stanley the evacuee.
This is an excellent book with a great cast of characters, it has a little bit of everything from family rifts to family reunions, love, laughter and heartbreak. This is a brilliant well written story which grabs you from the first page. Recommended.
Eric's James always writes a good story but this is one of her best- the sort of story you never want too end. Strong characters, excellent plot and many twists. A really great read. I loved it.
I absolutely adore Erica James books. This one is fantastic, I loved every single character. It was such a moving heartfelt story and really showcases the need and importance of family.
