This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended
Creepy! Definitely CREEPY
I wouldn’t go near this house if you paid me.
Deception, secrets, lies it’s all here within the pages of this book with plenty of characters for you to judge and suspect.
I’m glad the DI etc made some light banter within the gruesomeness of it all as my stomach did churn once or twice.
It’s a really good book if you want to get spooked, and written by a really good author.
The perfect read for Halloween!
Deliciously twisty, darkly gothic and spine tingly creepy!
Welcome to the Henderson House of Horrors.
Thank to NetGalley for the ARC ebook for my Kindle.
I'm sorry that it took me so long to read and write a review for this book, but it was a little to creepy for me. I tried to read it several times, and finally made myself read it. Sorry, just not my type of book.
Maura is a nurse and she takes on a private nursing job, looking after Gordon Henderson. She finds herself in a creepy house, working with Cheryl who is the cleaner/housekeeper, a woman who keeps many secrets. Cheryl isn't the only one, however. There are plenty more who are hanging onto secrets and some of those secrets turn out to be deadly.
It's a kind of creepy read
This mysterious tale plays out with masterful suspense
Thank you netgalley and the Author
This is a brilliant rollercoaster of a thriller. I found it needed to be read thoroughly as there are many twists and turns. Maura is offered a job as a live in nurse to look after a Gordon Henderson. He requires 24 hour care and Maura is tempted by the large cheque she receives in advance. The action begins as soon as she sets foot in Gordon's home with bodies turning up daily! Read on!
I loved this book. It had a scary aspect along with a lot of mysteries. The characters were so real.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I look forward to other novels by this author.
If you are in a slump and need something different to read then choose this one.
Ann Troup is a new author for me and although I enjoyed the book i found it very confusing on the whole with too many characters and too much happening all at the same time.
Maura Lyle a mental health nurse, takes a private nursing job to ease her back into work after the death of her husband. She is employed in an old run down mansion to look after its owner Gordon Henderson and is very quickly regretting her rash decision to take the job.
When strange things start happening Maura becomes embroiled in the lives of people, past and present, then bodies start piling up and her life is in danger too..
I struggled to keep up at times and found it too busy and confusing but enjoyed the concept of the storyline. Worth reading.
I loved this book, it is a complex story that has more twists, turns than the best roller coaster and it constantly keeps you guessing, the story follows Maura, a nurse, who is just returning to work after being signed off from work after the death of her husband, so when an old doctor colleague requests her personally to look after an old man with dementia living in a big rambling estate. Maura jumps at it as she thinks it will be the perfect way to get back to work but she is so wrong, the house and staff are strange and then bodies are found buried in land that used to belong to the estate and Then more deaths occur and the police are looking at Maura for answers as they seem to think she knows more than she's letting on . The forgotten room has been brilliantly written and I look forward to reading more from this author.
The Forgotten Room is full of twists, keeping you turning those pages wanting more and more. Highly recommended.
To me this sounded like a good gothic mystery to read during these cold nights. You have an old rambling house that seems to suck the soul right out you and it does. Maura accepts a nursing job taking care of its old dementia ridden resident. Not long after bones are discovered in the ground that once belonged to this resident. The question that’s in everybody’s mind is who they belonged to and how long have they been there. Maura starts feeling creeped out by the house and a few strange things start happening. Maura has already been battling depression since the death of her boyfriend and doesn’t feel comfortable in the house. After more bodies start turning up dead and being accused of murder, Maura needs to get out as soon as possible.
I thought the creepiness of this book was spot on and I admit to be startled at times. The book had a good pace and kept me reading late into the night. I would definitely read more by this author! Be aware that there’s lots of deception going on and secrets are slowly revealed.

1 star.
I am definitely the odd one out with this book. I found it to be SO PAINFULLY slow and uninteresting. Id heard that after half way it got better but I still found it wasnt worth extra stars just because of how much I didnt like the first half. But on a positive note, I really do like that cover! Obviously though, this just wasnt for me and given that others have rather enjoyed it, I would still suggest reading it if you seem interested.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher, I was looking forward to reading this book even though I felt it was a little bit scary but I can honest say it was a great read.
I knew right away that I wanted to read The Forgotten Room by Ann Troup. The blurb was interesting enough for me to know that this book would be something that would most likely suit me. Also, I've read the previous two books that Troup has written and they both were good. So, the question this time was would this one be just as good?
First I want to say that creepy old houses are a favorite thing for me and I was not disappointed. Right from the start does one get a feeling that something is wrong here. That Maura Lyle has stepped into a situation that she will regret. But, after recent events that have shaken her life is she ready for a change, and that she will get. The question is, just want is the house hiding?
Now, I don't want to give away too much of the story. But, I will point out that I was surprised by the twist and turns the book took. At first, the story seemed pretty straightforward with Maura getting to know the Henderson family. But, seriously, the story got pretty twisted the last half of the book. And, the great thing about this book is that it managed to balance the storyline so well that it never got too much. Things happened that could have tipped the story to be too ridiculous, but it kept on avoiding that that trap all the way through.
The Forgotten Room is a great book. It's twisted and interesting and I can't wait to find out what Ann Troup will publish next!
Reading this at Halloween was the perfect time for me as it was quite a chilling story, full of intrigue, secrets from the past and set in the creepiest location to add to the compelling journey that the author takes us on!
I have loved the previous books from Ann Troup, so was super excited to start on this one and it hasn't disappointed in any way! I found it quite darker than her previous books but once more she sets the scene so well that you really feel you are amongst it all and adds to the chills up your spine as you read!
We follow Maura as she goes to work as a nurse at Essen Grange - and it is as creepy as it sounds! It is the home of Gordon Henderson who is suffering badly with dementia and is kept locked in his room and dosed up to the eyeballs with a variety of drugs for a lot of the time, she finds it the perfect place to try and put her past behind her - sometimes that isn't always as easy as it sounds.
A cast of twisted characters are then introduced to the reader throughout and when the nearby building site is brought to a halt with the discovery of some bones, the plot starts to thicken and you wonder what part the past of Essen Grange and all who have lived there play in the grisly finds. And as the body count starts to increase - with some rather graphic and shocking outcomes - rumours from the past become a little more than hearsay! The tangled web of links is often difficult to predict which just adds to the intrigue!
it is difficult to say more without revealing any spoilers, other than to say it kept me hooked throughout and unable to put the book down at times as there was always another shock round the corner to play out!
Highly recommended for those who love their books full of sinister goings on!!!
I found this book to be pretty slow. I kept expecting it to pick up but it never really did. Not as much as I was hoping. There’s not much of a twist to it. What could’ve been a big twist is given away little by little throughout the story.
It was a good read though. And very, very well written.
Maura Lyle is a nurse sent by an agency to be a live in carer for the elderly resident of Essen Grange. When she arrives she finds the house is old and neglected, the housekeeper Cheryl is rude and the only friendly face is Bill the handyman. But from Maura's first night it is clear that someone wants her out.
There are a lot of layers and characters to keep up with but it's full of mystery and you are quickly drawn in to the mysterious past and present of the residents of Essen Grange.
Recommended read.
Nurse Maura Lyle has been having a hard time of it lately so when she is personally requested to work at Essen Grange to care for its owner, Gordon Henderson, she sees it as a good opportunity to get her life back on track. On arriving at the house, however, she soon senses that all is not right and that there seem to be secrets lurking around every corner. She should have trusted her instincts...
I loved Ann Troup's previous books so had been looking forward to reading this one and I am pleased to say that it did not disappoint. From the first chapter, the author draws you in and you fear for Maura's safety in the old, mysterious house she has found herself in. Although Maura knew something was amiss, due to her circumstances, it is easy to understand why she stayed even though her head was telling her to get out of there!
If you are looking for a book with multiple deaths and a psychopathic killer then this is the book for you, although it must be said that not all of the deaths are at the hand of the said killer. The amount of characters and how they interconnected did, at times, get slightly confusing and I wished I'd drawn up a family tree to help me understand exactly who was who! Once I'd established the relationships, however, what followed was a tangled web of deceit and intrigue with more than a touch of the macabre.
Although the story starts from the perspective of Maura, there's is a shift part way through when we get to see more of the police investigation into the goings-on at Essen Grange. I felt that this enabled the story to move along nicely and allowed us an insight into the minds of some of the other characters.
Ann Troup has, once again, written a page-turner, full of twists and turns, that I could not put down. A great read!
‘The Forgotten Room’ by Ann Troup is a creepy mystery thriller that’s perfect for this time of year. I love anything to do with old houses and the secrets held within their walls, so this was right up my street and I enjoyed it immensely.
With twists and turns aplenty and surprises galore, ‘The Forgotten Room’ kept me enthralled from beginning to end. A deliciously spooky tale that I would highly recommend.
4 stars.
The forgotten room by Ann troup.
Maura is a nurse. She has been asked for personaly to help care for an elderly patient Gordon. Cheryl is the housekeeper. There is something sinister about the place that is falling apart. But what is it? Who is the figure watching the house?
An absolutely fantastic read. I was curious as to who the figure was. Omg I didn't expect that. What a shocker. Blown away. Highly recommended. 5*. Netgalley tbc on fb hq digital.
