Book 2 in the Hollywood A-List series, and if possible it's even better than the first book. I absolutely adored Emily and Carter’s story, I mean truly adored it. Emily and her best friend Darlene met in school and became friends forever, both singing and dancing and wanting to make it big in Hollywood. Emily, sadly didn't make it as a superstar, not because of her lack of talent, but rather because of a possessive, abusive boyfriend. After ending said relationship she remains as choreographer for her now superstar best friend Darlene, sadly her abusive a$$hat ex doesn't seem to have got the memo. Finally Darlene gets her security detail to protect her, and who gets assigned to her? The super sexy Carter Kincaid, that's who. Told in dual POV, we get to see both sides of the story, and wow, what a story it is, secrets, lies and forbidden romance. Lots of action, sexual chemistry and emotional moments. Full five stars from me. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Having not read Bombshell, book 1 in the Hollywood A-List series, I was thrilled to find that Bodyguard could be read as a complete standalone story. Told from a dual POV, Bodyguard tells the story of Emily and Carter, two individuals who both have secrets they hold dear and fears that plague them at every turn: Emily with her crazy stalker ex-boyfriend and Carter with his family situation. All of the characters are dynamic and have a ton of chemistry with one another. From Emily and Carter's sexual attraction to Darlene and Emily's long-standing friendship to Carter's interactions with his pre-teen son who is completely endearing, readers will love the various connections the characters form.
There is suspense and intrigue throughout and Reiss does a stand up job building up the drama, leaving me racing through the story to find out just when Emily's dangerous ex was going to strike and how. There are so many options and the author deftly leads the reader in several different directions to keep them on their toes and to keep their interests peaked. It's the perfect setup leading to an explosive resolve. Add in the hot and heavy scenes between Emily and Carter coupled with the tender scenes between parent and son and readers will thoroughly enjoy this fabulous and exciting story.
This book cracked my heart right open- sometimes with super mushy and sweet moments that just tugged at me, sometimes at epic turning points that made my eyes flood.
Bodyguard is book two in the Hollywood-A-List series, but they are totally stand alones. For long time readers of CD's works, there are Easter egg tidbits of characters from other stories sprinkled here or there. What fun!
Poor Emily has to live a life of fear and doubt, which doesn't really protect her anyways. And Carter was supposed to be her friend's bodyguard, though Emily needed him much more. There's a lot of push and pull and angst. I loved it.
This is told in dual point of view with a happily ever after.
4 stars- the marriage of Reiss and Montlake has been a brilliant idea. This is the second entry to this Hollywood series and it has so much going for it... It is so much more than a bodyguard and how the target and guard fall for each other. It totally works.
Bodyguard was a light, quick read. It was okay, definitely not bad, but also not something I would run to tell my friends about. While there were emotional situations or plots/sub-plots to the book, I never felt truly invested...as if the surfaces were only scratched where it could have been so much deeper. Carter and Phin and their love for one another and their story was probably one of my favorite things about this book. I also enjoyed Emily and Darlene’s relationship. I also loved that Emily finally said enough was enough when it came to living her life how she wanted. It’s awesome to have a strong heroine, but I felt that could have gone further. I would have liked to see her protect herself against Vince...relating back to the shooting lessons or having her take a martial arts...I don’t know. And the storyline with as far as Vince goes was a bit anti-climatic. He was made out to be this sinister guy, but when Carter overheard him on phone, Vince just didn’t come off as being how he was previously presented to be. And I was disappointed that the story seemed to blow right over the aftermath. This was such a big part of Emily’s story, but I didn’t get a sense for how she felt afterwards...the relief, etc.
So an okay read. I’m not mad I read it, and I liked it okay. But I just felt there was so much potential for it to be great rather than okay. There were so many great aspects that could have been better developed or followed through on. Thank you for letting me read.
I'm getting less and less impressed with these books they are predictable and feel like they just reuse the same old idea over and over again.
Let me begin by explaining my personal rating system. Three stars is good! Not great, not super, but good. The Bodyguard was a good story and I really did enjoy it but I found my attention equally, if not more interested in, the story with Carter and Phin, his son than I did with Emily and Carter. I enjoyed their banter and relationship, I really did, and I enjoyed the way the professional aspect of it was not ignored but handled realistically. The moments I cried, were with Phin, the quotes I wanted to highlight were with Phin....see a pattern? "The size of my heart" makes me choke up a little just thinking about it. CD wrote this boy so beautifully I actually want his story! The entire book was a build=up of waiting for a stalker to attack and then when he did, it was quick and simple. Carter is mysterious, we need a little more information about what makes him tick. A tad bit more background than just about his being a punk kid turned around. Emily we have a little more information on thanks to the prologue but I would still like to know things like where are her parents now, what do they say about the ex-boyfirend, why aren't they trying to protect her like most parents would? Also, what the hell actually happened with the cat? Do not misunderstand me, I enjoyed the book, it was a light read and I dig the famous BFF, the hot bodyguard and the mystery aspect. It was a solid good book, but with a little more it could have been great!
traight up truth, I was so worried throughout this book as to what was going to bring Emily's stalker problem to a head. I was anxious on what would happen to her, or Phin, and was right there with Carter. So a huge thanks that I didn't worry for nothing, and it made it almost all okay when it happened
With that out of the way, I loved this book! I loved the characters, our leads Carter and Emily, his and her sides with Phin, Brenda, Darlene (fab name, I know), and Simon. I loved the body guards, the back up dancers, the creepy managers and agents. I hated the bad guys, and his guys. I loved the cat, which, as a point of interest, I have a grey cat that hangs out at my house and we call him grey cat.
This is a story of a star, Darlene, and her best friend, Emily. They met young, grew up great, and headed off to make their way, as equals. Emily ended up with a turdy boyfriend, who became her crazy stalker. Darlene get threats, they get body guards. Carter is one of the body guards and he meets Emily when he frisks her. She is no longer a star in the making, she is Darlene's choreographer.
Carter is hiding, protecting, his life, his son, his mom, and all for very good reasons. It makes him paranoid about everything, which is a good thing in a body guard. His issues are well founded, though he is a little bit over-protective sometimes. As the story unfolded, his story was the one that made me tear up, and his reactions and actions made me swoon
Some back and forth, breakup, makeup, but not a lot. A teenager with ADHD is the child, so no cuteness, just normal, beginning, teenager wonder. An easy flowing story in alternative POV's from Carter and Emily. A love story that blossoms even when those tending it did their best to ignore it, and tried to walk away from it, but it was too spectacular for them not to keep noticing it!
I loved reading the fabulous and awesome romance story. I voluntarily reviewed Bodyguard through Netgalley. Emily's ex-boyfriend becomes more and threatening, so Darlene, Emily's best friend, loans one of her bodyguards to Emily. Emily not only likes her sexy, handsome bodyguard, Carter, but wants him. Carter finds it harder and harder to fight his passions for Emily. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written must read love story full if romance and intrigue.
3.5/5 stars
Bodyguard is book two in the Hollywood A-List series. However this book is a complete standalone. There is only one small mention of a character from book 1 (Bombshell). But it is completely not relevant to the story at all.
Bodyguard is an adult contemporary romance. It is my first book by this author.
The narrators are Emily and Carter (1st person POVs).
Emily is a choreographer for her best friend mega-star Darlene. Carter works as a bodyguard.
I absolutely loved Emily and Darlene's friendship. And I really enjoyed Carter's family.
There was nothing wrong with this book. It kept my interest. Both main characters were appealing. There was a great female friendship. There were even a couple of interesting twists. However I think I just wanted to feel more. I liked the story. I liked the characters. But I just wanted to love them.
Following on in the Hollywood A-List series we have Carter and Emily.
Single dad, bodyguard looking after those that need peotection....love those stories.
Unfortunately it fell a bit flat for me. I mean it was good but it was just so drawn out. I'm all for a long story but I need the scenes to be meaningful but a lot in here wasn't and I felt myself drifting a lot, hence the 3.5 stars.
There is romance, a bit of suspense and a hot guy though.
This is another extraordinarily book by CD Reiss and your going to absolutely love very second of it and more. It has a interesting plot that kept me occupied and riveted all the way through the book. Plus this book will have all your emotions involved in this book in a very good way, the author has outdone herself again with this book. Highly recommend
This is more of the case that it is me and not the book. The characters are strong and the plot is also interesting but I'm not captivated by it.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Bodyguard is the first book I’ve read by C.D. Reiss but it won’t be the last. The writing, at both the prose and plot levels, is simply amazing. If you’re looking for rich, deep characters, moving complex scenes, a storyline that builds until the very last page, and a rich read, C.D. Reiss is for you. I ended the book wondering where I could get all her titles and why on earth I hadn’t read anything of hers before.
It’s a love story of course, between Carter and Emily, two characters who are both trapped in very different ways. One thing that’s amazing is that she takes a pair of people who are so different, and yet, in some respects identical. Through a sequence of scenes, she moves the plot forward, their love growing, but their ability to do something about it being challenged in new, meaningful ways. We get that all important character reflection, but it's not overdone. A complaint I have about a number of books is that either the scenes or the emotional reflections are not well balanced, with one overwhelming the other, leading at least for me, to characters I either come to dislike (just stop thinking and do something!) or ones I never understand (what are they thinking?).
This book was perfect, C.D. Reiss writes like a dream. Read and you won’t regret it. In fact, I think you’ll love it.
This is a standalone but in the same world as Shuttergirl and Bombshell. I still haven't read Shuttergirl yet....it's on my TBR but I loved Bombshell! The Bodyguard is just as good with wonderful likeable characters. Although the bedroom scenes weren't as hot as Bombshell. It's a story about an abusive relationship that has turned into a stalker relationship. But it's also a story of Carter and his son and all the ways he is trying to right by him,,,,....and I loved that! Carter is the best! He is so noble, loyal, steadfast and HOT!!! Emily is also great too.......she is not coy. She knows what she wants and goes for it. I wish there was a bit more info on what happens to her stalker in the end......just to tie things off. Phinnaeus is also the best.......a teenage boy with issues but so smart and intuitive. All in all this is a story of 2 mature adults with a lot of baggage coming to terms w said baggage and learning to love each other. Hoping for more in this "Hollywood" world!
Bodyguard is a standalone and is part of the Hollywood A-List series AND is a single dad book, which I love! I was not disappointed and really enjoyed this book!
Emily needs protection and Carter is the one assigned to her. Emily is trying to move on with her life after finally seeing her ex boyfriend for the scum he really was. Unfortunately for Emily, her ex isn’t ready to let her go just yet.
Carter is the sexy, caring alpha male trying to protect Emily and his family at the same time. Carter has his own issues from the past and is desperately trying to keep them there. As Carter and Emily start to become more than they imagined, little bits of their pasts are revealed, with Emily actually being more open and honest then Carter. As far as Carter’s secret..multiple secrets I might add..it was more than I expected and I loved it.
Bodyguard is full of suspense, action and is a beautiful love story with sweet and sexy moments. The ending was just as I expected, full of action, forgiveness and growth. I enjoyed every moment of this book!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This made for a good popcorn book- it satisfies the need for a snack but it is not particularly memorable. Sometimes that is exactly what you need in a book. A solid story that doesn't make you think or feel too much.
I liked this book. I did not rush home to finish it or find myself thinking about the characters throughout the day but I was properly entertained. The characters were not well rounded, life-like creations but I liked them and was interested in their story. I would read more in the series.
This series is so wonderful! I love seeing this other side of writing from CD Reiss. It shows her ability to write whatever she wants. Who doesn't love a protector? This story was complex. It's never easy to balance a public persona and private one. These characters wanted to everything right. Even when it means leaving someone you love.
I'm a total fan of CD Reiss. Her books always draw me in. Add some Hollywood drama and I'm sold
