How could I resist that cover? Blond? Beard? That intense expression? Oh yeah, I couldn't.
This was really good for the first 30% or so then the sex started. I did not like how controlling and possessive Zander was, both sexually and relationship-wise. You can dress it up as shifter behavior but it's still ***hole behavior. I also wasn't crazy about the fact that during he would call her 'my baby' as in "I want to f**k my baby". That just squicked me out. If he'd said "my woman" or "my lover" I'd have had no problem but 'my baby' in that context was just icky. It might not bother others but it bothered me. I liked the mate bond - I liked that there's the possibility that it might never happen, there's a not a guaranteed HEA or even a guarantee that they'll ever meet. I wasn't thrilled at how quickly things happened, under a month, but that's typical for paranormal romances.
Gwen was appealing right off the bat - strong, fierce, compassionate, loyal, accepting of others. She had emotional barriers up, even with family members but she loved deeply and completely. She was suspicious of Zander at first but he was suspicious of her too. He also had emotional barriers up, both had unhappy family backgrounds, and that affected their interactions. Zander was impatient, demanding, and controlling which Gwen was mostly okay with but seriously got on my nerves. He was kind to her and took good care of her but let's just say that he had zero concept of personal boundaries. He was basically a decent person but I had a difficult time getting past his controlling behavior with Gwen. Sometimes she accepted his behavior and sometimes she resisted but he always got his way.
I did like the bulk of the story - the case with the shifter who was attacked, Gwen's family, Zander's family and pack, and shifter politics. While there was some predictability, there were twists also and the ghosts were a nice touch. The story grabbed me and kept me reading until 2AM when I finished it. I cared about what happened, I wanted happy endings and justice for everyone.
"Lure of Oblivion" worked perfectly fine as a stand alone. I do have an earlier book from a related series; I'll give that one a try and see if the romance and sex work better for me. I definitely like the world building and I want to give it another chance. Not great but worth a read.
As always this is another great story to an awesome series. Now I can't say I thought much of Zander in previous books, but once again I was sucked in.
Another great instalment in the lives and loves of the Mercury wolves. Gwen Miller shows that no good deeds goes un punished . After she rescues a lone shifter, her life is never the same, threats and intimidation are just a few obstacles she has to overcome In her journey. Zander when Gwen first sees him you know they're prefect for each other . Both with hidden pain and strong wills. Who will admit to love first.. The emotional content was excellently well written. Will be waiting to read the next instalment.
This urban fantasy/paranormal romance pits Gwen Miller against a wealthy family whose son assaulted a shifter. Gwen's human but she isn't going to let harassment keep her from doing the right thing. She suffers escalating bouts of harassment from Brandt Moore and his father Ezra. It doesn't help that the Moore's have the local law under their thumb.
When Zander Devlin comes to the B&B Gwen's family runs, he is fascinated by her. He has come to attend the reading of his uncle's will which disinherits his twin brother in his favor. Zander has never gotten along with his twin who was favored by his parents and who has always wanted everything Zander had. This favoritism has made Zander emotionally withdrawn because the people who should have treated him fairly did not.
When Zander learns about Gwen's problems, he volunteers to help her. The problems remind him of problems his sister had. Humans and shifters quite often don't get along well. In fact, there are human extremists who are determined to put down shifters. The Moores are not openly members of the extremists but are certainly in favor of their actions.
The romance between Zander and Gwen is complicated both because he is a shifter and she is human and the fact they they both come from abusive backgrounds which make them emotionally guarded. Any sort of romance is also complicated by Zander's brother who is determined to get what he thinks is rightfully his from Zander and the Moores who want Gwen to back down on her accusations against their son before it comes time for him to go before the Shifter Council.
The sex scenes - and there were lots of them - were quite spicy. The action scenes were graphic. The story was fast-paced. Fans of paranormal romances will enjoy this one.
Suzanne is one of my favorite authors for a few reasons. one of them is because she can write a story so well that after awhile you realize you aren't IN the story, but reading it! This story is no different! Another thing I really like about her work is that she doesn't feel the need to write every single detail of everything down like some do. (My example, this is not in the book: ...The curtains were bright blue like the cloudless sky on a summer afternoon. There were these little sprinkles of glitter like substance that caused them to look like they are shimmering when the window is open and the breeze hit them. The lamp itself is made of.......ETC) Suzanne actually can describe the area, person etc without overloading in details. It is AWESOME. Now about the story and why I give it 4 stars:
This is the 3rd book in the Mercury Pack series. There is another series called the Phoenix Pack, that kind of ties into the Mercury Pack series. You don't need to read the Phoenix Pack series to understand the Mercury Pack one. However, it will help you understand the Packs in a much brighter light. Plus, the other series is also really good so, BONUS! In this story: Zander is a quiet yet fierce guy, so when he ends up staying at an Inn where he crosses paths with a feisty strong minded human named Gwen, he gets thrown for a loop. And a challenging loop is one way to explain it. He is not only not used to the overbearing need to be with someone, but to feel his wolfs weariness is making me uneasy and confused. Gwen is fine not needing anyone around to "save" her. So when a very captivating lean wolf shifter shows up at her inn claiming to be there to "protect" them, she is not all that impressed. Well, that's what she tells herself. While Gwen and Zander battle the wits they throw at each other and try to deny the spark of sexual tension between them, theirs a dark threat closing in on them. Gwen is not the type to just turn her back on the right thing to do because it would be easier Nor is she the type to bend when she's faced with wealthy arrogance that shows danger is imminent She's ready to dig in deep and make them pay. Zander can admire Gwens strength and determination for helping out one of his kind and just do the right things. But why the Hell won't she just do as he says?! It's for her own good and safety! "Snort".
Yeah, this is another winner from Suzanne. I've noticed that most series usually taper off and get mundane. I can happily say that not only is that not a case for Suzanne's series, but that they seem to be gearing up even more. I can't wait for the next installment! Obviously, I do recommend this book. I do encourage you to get her other books from this series and the Phoenix Pack as well. If you are into vampires, then you will also like her series called the The Deep in Your Veins. Want something a little more different? Then try her other series called The Dark in You. Whichever way you go, you can't go wrong by getting her books. HAPPY READING!
I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.
I find this world really interesting and I will continue to read absolutely anything this author puts out.
Another wonderful story in this fab series! I love seeing how all the characters join in and out the storyline, supporting Zander and Gwen as they struggle through their journey together. Highly recommended!
Everything i have come to expect from a Suzanne Wright book. Couldn't put it down, and can't wait for the next instalments on the mercury and phoenix packs :)
ARC courtesy of netgalley very good read Alfa male strong h no OM/OF Suzanne Wright is one of my FAVORITE authors and never disappoints HEA
It has been a while since I read about the Mercury and Phoenix Packs. Ms. Wright does a good job of giving us background info on the characters from the past without it being boring and irrelevant. This story deals with the horrors of domestic abuse and its long term effects on those subjected to it. The book also focuses on the importance of consequences, humanity, and true family.
I liked the story line. I liked all of the new characters and how they interacted with the old characters. I thought Donnie was hilarious, and he brought just the right dose of lethal craziness at just the right moments. Its always nice seeing the old characters that I've grown fond of again. I could visualize what I was reading with no problems and was easily swept up in the story. I liked the pairing of Zander and Gwen. Both characters strong and wary of most people due to their pasts. Their backstories were both saddening, but made them who they were, just right for each other.
The pacing was fairly steady, though it increased tremendously towards the end. I found myself cringing and holding my breath through many parts. The story is well put together and flows easily. There is no unnecessary drama, unless you count a spoiled teen who does not know when to quit. I found that I either really liked the characters or I really wanted them to get a dose of their own medicine. Rory angered me and made me like Zander more for enduring his craziness for as long as he had.
Toward the end, there was a whirlwind of names seemingly being tossed from nowhere. It took me a minute to figure out all the people mentioned. It was fine once I worked out who they were. Great story. I think you could get away with reading this as a stand alone, but you will not have a deep connection with the old characters.
This is an adult book with adult words and adult scenes that may trigger adults wanting to make their own scenes after reading. Just saying. 4.5 stars
3.5-4 stars
After three books it finally feels like a Mercury Pack book and not a Phoenix Pack extended book. It helped of course that no one from the Phoenix Pack made an appearance. This was strictly a Mercury Pack show even if most of it takes place away from their home.
Gwen Miller is human. She and her family run a haunted inn that has a marsh for a backyard. She's a witness in a vile crime, an entitled teenager drugging and beating a female shifter, and she's being harassed over it. But Gwen wont back down and refuses to be bribed or intimidated into changing her testimony. Her need to do what is right and stand up for the shifter is ingrained to her very being.
Zander Devlin books a room at Gwen's inn and is soon intrigued by her. When he finds out what she did for one of his kind he wants to help and keep her safe from everything and everyone. But she's not the only one that has troubles. Zander has his own bad childhood and nemesis that has shaped him and his wolf.
Zander finds himself drawn to Gwen. Her strength and desire to do the right thing along with a set of killer legs are irresistible to him even if his wolf backs away at her presence. But getting to know Gwen and being with her is no bed of roses and our wolf has his work cut out for him.
"To have someone made specifically for you - someone who would never betray you, never hurt you, and would always cherish you- would be something special."
"Baby, why is it so hard to believe I simply want to know you? Why does there have to be some sort of technical reason for it? {..} I like what I know about you. I want to know more."
"Fuck, yes. I want you with me. I want you in my pack. I want you to be there when I wake up."
Things as always with out wolves are not that easy. Gwen and Zander have enemies gunning for them as well their own personal issues to overcome. But again, as always they have pack and in Gwens case family to support them through it all.
So why not 5 stars? Well, first because it didn't feel memorable to me. SW followed her pack formula faithfully and it felt just a teeny weeny samey (I hope the literary gods don't strike me down for my hubris.) And secondly because it lagged a bit in the middle. It felt a bit like spending time until we got to the big event/action towards the end(again, hubris.) But I loved absolutely loved the setting of the haunted inn with a marsh behind it and all the secondary characters in Gwens family. Particularly uncle Donnie. Give me a big Victorian house, tell me it's haunted and I'll be happy to read it. A great addition to the series even with the teeny tiny issues.
I'm a little embarrassed to say I wasn't sure Suzanne was going to pull this one off. I wasn't convinced that a human woman and a wolf shifter, much less one as controlled as Zander, could work as mates. Man on man did she prove me wrong!
Gwen is amazing, no beyond amazing, she's a little bit of all the she wolves that we've met in the past. Stubborn, insightful, kind, a little crazy, has a smart mouth, and the list goes on and on. She's all of them wrapped up in a human package. Gwen made this book. Don't get me wrong the story was great, the romance was sexy, the sex was hot, but Gwen was the standout for me that really made this book pop!
Finally some insight into the dark and broody Zander. Getting to hear his history and see his close friendship with both Jesse and Bracken really endeared him to me. I've always liked him but, he never really stood out to me until Suzanne let us inside his head. Needless to say his got my full attention now.
This is just another fantastic book in a series of fantastic books. Suzanne knows how to write and she really knows how to write wolf shifters.
I absolutely love everybook Suzanne has ever written. She is my go to author. This book did not disappoint at all. It is brilliant !
4.5 Stars
I have been so impressed with the latest releases in this series! I love that the Mercury and Phoenix Packs are intertwined. Each new book is like reading an extended epilogue.
This is Zander's story. He and his best friends left their home pack and joined the Mercury wolves. Zander happens to stay at Gwen's family's B&B and the more he gets to know her, the more he can't stay away.
This one has the continuing story of the threat from the extremist. We see some familiar faces and we get to meet all of Gwen's family. Lot's of action and intrigue to this one. Ghosts and wolves and humans and avian shifters....whew! Great read once again from this author.
This book is the third book in the Mercury Pack series, but I picked this up based on my enjoyment of the first couple of books in the Phoenix Pack series by Suzanne Wright. I didn't realize this was the third in a different series until I started to hear about other couples in this book who seemed like they had probably established those relationships in other books. Picking up on that didn't lessen my enjoyment of this story, and while I'm sure I missed out on some backstory by reading them out of order, I wouldn't hesitate to say that you can read this book without having read any previous books by the author.
Lure of Oblivion features two closed-off people, a woman named Gwen and a wolf shifter named Zander. They both have issues with their biological families that make romantic relationships more difficult, but they're pushed together by outside forces. They're both strong and somewhat bossy, and I enjoyed their give and take as they figure out what they have together. The side characters are so interesting and vivid that I want detailed stories about all of them. I've already picked up the first two books in this series to catch up on the romances I missed.
I loved this book. Zander is a quiet pack member that we have not really got to know in the previous books. Gwen, OMG, I want to be her when I grow up. She's standing up for what's right, a shifter who was hurt badly by a human, and getting a lot of bad things happening to her because of it but she stands her ground. The human's daddy has a lot of money and the police in their pocket. But she's still doing the right thing even though they are still coming after her. Zander comes to town because of a relative who has passed and he has to be at the will reading. He stays with Gwen in her families bed and breakfast. Let me tell you something... the saying its always the quiet ones... IT's TRUE here. Zander is possessive, especially once his family issues come to light as well as Gwen's tormentors. Add in Gwen's wacky family (her uncle is hilarious) and you have just a wonderful read. I would advise you to start the book when you have a few couple of hours cause you will NOT want to put it down. Also, while you don't NEED to read other in the series I would advise you to do so just cause they rock! ARC provided by netgalley.
I have to say I was realy excited when I found out I had received a ARC of this book because this is one of my absolute favourite authors and especially the Phoenix Pack and Mercury Pack series are some of my favourite books!!
This one is about our beloved Zander and a new character named Gwen! I liked that they were true mates and she was human, that was a good change! The thing about the book is that, because she is a human and doesn't live anywhere near the pack, the majority of the book is spent with her family and away from almost all the pack and for me, one of the best things about this series is the element of family that we see in their daily life. Not that her family wasn't great, because they were, but I wanted more of an interaction with the rest of the pack, not just some of them that came to help in Gwen's situation.
Not only that, but I also found Gwen's sitution lacking, comparing to previous books. I would have liked if the book was a little more about her past or even Zander's family or something, I didn't like the way his brother just came in and out of the story, it was a little bit inconsistent. Nevertheless, Lure of Oblivion is still one of my favourite because I just love Suzanne Wright's writing, she never ceases to amaze me.
I also believe that some of my dissapointment might have come from the fact that it wasn't about Trick or Dominic, because they are my absolute favourites and after reading Fierce Obsessions I though the next was one of them and, I have to admite, I was a sad when I found out that Trick's story isn't coming until SUMMER 2018!!! I CAN'T WAIT THAT LONG!!! I really want him to have a male true mate, am I the only one? I just think that it would be awesome for him: a dominant male true mate!!!
Well, what can I say about Lure of Oblivion? Although it wasn't my favourite of this author, I would still recommend it to anyone who likes romance with an dominant male and an equally dominant female and with action and great secondary characters! But if you haven't read the other books in the Phoenix Pack or Mercury Pack series, I really think you should read them all in order of publishing because they are all interconnected even if you CAN read them as standalone, it won't be as good!
GO AND GET THIS BOOK!!!
So far my favourite in the Mercury Pack series!
If the ending came through as strong as the rest of the book, it would have been an easy 5 star read.
Full review to be shared closer to release date
This was a fast pasted, steamy, fun read. Gwen was a tough no-nonsense character that I really enjoyed and Zander was a surprise. From previous books I didn't feel like I knew him very well so I didn't know what to expect. He was super hot and I loved how he didn't fight his connection to Gwen. Love these books, each one is an action packed, fun PNR read, I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

Lure of Oblivion is the third book in the Mercury Pack. Although this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. The Mercury Pack is a spin-off of the Phoenix Pack and both packs are full of alpha male shifters and their sassy shifter mates. With each book release, I become more entranced by this world and believe me when I say I will never get enough.
Gwen Miller is a human who has been thrust into a deadly battle. By trying to protect a shifter who was brutally attacked, she has put herself and her family in danger. When enforcer Zander Devlin checks into the inn where Gwen works, he is instantly drawn to her. Although it is rare for a shifter and a human to mate, it is possible. As Zander and Gwen grow closer, the battle between the "shifter hating humans" and the shifters continues to escalate. Gwen is in danger and Zander will do whatever it takes to keep her safe and make her his forever!
Told in dual POV, Lure of Oblivion is another winning shifter read with passion, romance, action, and suspense. Ms. Wright has created a fantastical world full of complex characters living under intense circumstances. I found the human/shifter mating twist to be quite unique and as always with this series, once I started reading, I COULD NOT STOP!
Overall, I highly recommend Lure of Oblivion to all of my paranormal romance friends! This is one world where I will never get enough!
