I seemed to have deleted my copy of this and now it's archived, Netgalley insists on me reviewing each book I download even if I don't read it to keep my score up.
With thanks to netgalley.
The third book by Gregg Hurwits that I really enjoyed. Fast paced and full of action. I’m sure gregg hurwitzs fan will enjoy this book.
Heart-stopping and utterly thrilling, I finished this novel in the early hours (I'll just have to apologise to my boss for yawning!)
I read the third book in the series before the second so in this one, we meet Joey for the first time.
It didn't make an ounce of difference though, these also work as stand alone books.
An incredibly clever tie up of all loose ends in the conclusion which I definitely didn't see coming even though I was desperately trying to work out how he would do it.
I'm finding myself falling a little in love with Orphan X (If only he would thaw out a bit more!) but I'd certainly want him on my side in a fight.
Can't wait for book number 4.
Absolutely loved this book. I've read every single book in the series but you can read them as standalone novels. The characters are so well written and the development between them brings the story to life.
Not having come across Hurwitz's books before, I was hooked from page one. This is an excellent lone ranger/super human being kind of thriller that has all the elements of a good page turner - trauma, drama, close relationships, grief and extremely dangerous situations. If you enjoyed the Bourne trilogy, you will love this.
Evan Smoak is the Nowhere Man and uses his prodigious talents and stored wealth to help people in dire straits. The unlisted government department that made him into what he is is also after him. While trying to protect what's dear to him and torn between that and his calling to help others, he has to navigate extremely dangerous waters.
This book was so entertaining, it did not matter that it was the third in the series. It was so good, I am now reading the rest.
I did enjoy reading this book - not as a great literary tome, but just a fun, exciting, old fashioned thriller albeit with modern tech inside. The plot wasn't complicated, there were no exciting twists (the author may disagree, but the plot never took off in another direction). But as a read that kept my attention, and had to be finished, it was very satisfying.
I enjoyed the character of Joey, and would love to know what became of her.
Greg Hurwitz's Orphan X series continues in the same fast-paced rhythm we have now become accustomed to. This time Evan seeks revenge while also looking after the fearless 16-year old Joey, a former protegee of his mentor Jack Jones.
This sequel is packed with action and I much preferred it to the 2nd book in the series - although I didn't like it as much as the first book.
Thank you to the Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an impartial and honest review.
I was given a free copy of Hellbent in return for a review on NetGalley. When I noticed it was the third in the series, I knew I had to read the first two books first. I’m a bit OCD about reading books in the correct order. The first book, Orphan X, was really good, the second, The Nowhere Man, was excellent and this one, Hellbent, was just as exciting.
In this story Evan loses his beloved mentor Jack. Knowing his fate Jack leaves little clues for Evan. They lead him to Joey; a messed up 16 year old girl, also part of the latest Orphan programme set up my Van Scriver. Not making the grade Van Scriber kicks her out and she’s now running for her life. Her and Evan make a good team, saving innocents and dodging the government officials that are trying to kill them both.
Will they ever be able to live normal lives? It’s all Evan wants for Joey. He knows it’s to late for him and he’s willing to die to get her there. Will he manage it?
You’ll have to read it to find out.
High stakes and high octane, Hellbent is an action-packed thriller and another hit from bestselling author Gregg Hurwitz.
This is the third novel in the Orphan X series and it jumps right in to continue where the previous book left off. Although this could be read as a standalone, I'd definitely recommend reading Orphan X and The Nowhere Man (books one and two) first as they help to paint a fuller picture of Evan's backstory.
Although there is still plenty of action in this book, the tension takes a slightly different edge in Hellbent compared to the previous two books. Throughout the course of this book, we learn more about Evan - the person behind the unstoppable killing machine. There is a noticeably more human element to this book and it adds an intriguing new dimension to the series and the characters.
As ever, though, Hellbent is mysterious, immersive, and exciting. Evan is a great main character and unlike many other thriller protagonists, he is three-dimensional and well-rounded. You easily find yourself rooting for him and holding your breath every time he gets into a tricky situation! Without a doubt, this is a story that will suck you in and keep you reading right to the very end!
With book four already sitting on my to-read list, it certainly won't be long before I'm back in Evan's world again!
This is my first book that I’ve read by Gregg Hurwitz and I’m just upset I left it so long. I somehow completely missed that I had an eARC from Netgalley and just found it while trying to get back and tidy up my Netgalley shelves. So I’m so sorry that this review should have come a long time ago!
Wow, I really really enjoyed this read. I loved the relationships between characters, how you could feel the difficulty Evan felt when with or thinking about Mia. How his relationship with Joey grew from nothing, then negative feelings into something worth living for.
I’ll definitely be looking into the authors latest books, and I see he has written a few YA books so I’m going to see if I can buy them now as I usually prefer YA books and I enjoyed this one so much!
I couldn't get into this book. It did not grab my interest. It had too much describing of things that were irrelevant.
What an explosive story. Gregg never disappoints; the power in his writing really grips you as a reader and you cannot stop reading. Hellbent was brilliantly addictive and one heck of a rollercoaster ride (if not better!).
I would really like to recommend this but when I discover red that I had not read the first novels in the series - I found the character names and motivations a little vague and murky. I have since read the other books in the series and I intend to finish this.
I haven't read any of the other books in this series so I started this one with very few expectations.
It's not really a type of book I would pick up but I did find myself wanting to find out what happens. I don't want to give too much if the plot away but it's a thriller revolving around Hurwitz's recurring character, Evan Smoak. He is a government assassin who has broken from the programme that trained him and he now helps others. However, he gets a call from his former trainer/father figure which throws his world into chaos.
It's a phrase that is used a lot (including by me!) but it's a good page turner in the main. I'm not sure it did enough to encourage me to read the other books in the series and I did find some sections a little slow. But it was clearly a well researched book and I really admire the level of detail.
I am sure that fans of thrillers and books like the Jack Ryan series would enjoy this.
Nikita/Hanna for boys - the orphan trained as an assassin/agent. Turned loose/disillusioned and hunted by former comrades. Ensue the thriller.
A really gripping thriller that kept me guessing until the very last page. I loved it. Would recommend!
This book is full of action and suspense and the excitement builds and builds to the very end of the book.
This is the third book in the Evan Smoak/Orphan X series. I haven’t read the first two books so kind of read into a lot of the background of them online to help me catch up. When Evan was twelve, Jack took him from an orphanage and put him in a super-secret Department of Defense black-ops program - a scheme designed to turn orphans into highly skilled assassins. The children were stripped of their names and were given new identities designated alphabetically: Orphan A, Orphan B etc. Evan was orphan X.
Jack was a father figure and mentor to Evan, and made sure he kept his humanity while he learned his craft. Orphan X was assigned his first mission at nineteen, and worked so hard eliminating his targets that he burnt himself out or did his humanity come into play? Evan left the program and self-identified as the nowhere man - a good samaritan who helps people in desperate trouble. However, no one is allowed to leave the Orphan Program. If a member opts out, the head Van Sciver, also known as Orphan Y - sends his team after the deserter. These assasins have been chasing Evan for years, but his home is a fortress and he's taken elaborate measures to protect himself. In order to flush Evan out, Van Scriver sends his team after the man who trained/nurtured Evan and succeed in killing him. Evan is furious and is Hellbent on avenging his mentor Jack Johns.
When Evan is led to retrieve a package left by his mentor he finds out that the package is a feisty teenage girl called Joey and he has to become her reluctant guardian. She was angry and frustrated with her rejection from the Orphan Program but is unaware she is still in Van Sciver's sights. Joey is a talented computer hacker and programmer, and sets up a sophisticated data mining system to help Evan trace his enemies. Whilst all this is happening, Orphan X gets a call on his RoamZone phone used to contact 'The Nowhere Man.' A man needs help, his son is about to be initiated into the Mara Salvatrucha gang and he begs for Evans help. Im sure ive seen a movie or a tv series about this book, but for the life of me I can’t remember or find what it is called despite using all the obvious titles and extensive searching. I loved it though.
Thanks to Netgalley for the book in return for an honest review.
This was a cleverly written, slightly futuristic thriller which gave permission for the unrealistic elements of the story. Decent plot line and characters that you could engage with.
If there was a sequel, I’d definitely read it.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book
I love this series and book three certainly didn't disappoint. A brilliantly written thriller of a read that keeps you guessing until the end. Highly recommended.
