On the whole, I found this book offered a sage perspective. While much of what was offered was common sense, the authors have written a book full of wisdom for church leaders. The authors provide a useful framework, looking into ministerial obligations to self, family, congregation, colleagues and community. The emphasis on accountability, the chapter about sexual abuse and the appendices containing sample Codes of Ethics are all very practical. The further reading available at the end of each chapter is also useful.

Ethics in Christian Ministry certainly covers topics in much depth, exploring every angle and the history of many issues. To be honest I didn’t read the entire book thoroughly and I did skim read at times. While I’m sure this book will make a useful and thorough academic textbook, perhaps a pithier version of the book would be useful for time-pressed ministers and elders. The only other criticism I would offer was that the book was quite American centric and may not be quite as applicable to an international audience.
