'Faking Friends' by Jane Fallon is a look at female friendships: their twists, turns, betrayals and loyalties.
The plot follows Amy and the aftermath of her best friend Mel's betrayal of her. When Amy finds out that Mel has stolen Amy's fiance, Amy vows to get revenge on both of them, and the novel tells the story of that aftermath. We see Amy trying (and sometimes failing) to rebuild her life, while also trying to give Mel the comeuppance she feels is owed to Mel.
I really enjoyed this book: the main characters were likeable and their motivations clear. The book's structure was impeccable; with backstory and story-story weaved seamlessly together, forming a rich and enjoyable book from beginning to end. Highly recommended.
This book was an enjoyable read but I thought a little extreme for a girlfriend whose man had been unfaithful. Funny in places and not quite what I expected.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this amazing book
have to say this is one of those books that makes you think i have friends like this.. we all know people that have that one bestie that everyone else avoids, we also have people that we are close to and hang around with for good and the bad times
this book starts out really really funny but as you carry on reading all the other emotions come into play as well
amy and mel have been friends since childhood, amy is a struggling actor and mel who has it all apart from the one thing she craves the most...fame and recognition and its their story
everyone has a mel in their lives ...they are a strange breed of person, fun to be around but very self destructive, but we are all like moths to flames and gravitate towards them until that final act of betrayal
amy well we all know the girl next door, the one everyone has in her ring of friendship, the one that gets overlooked and is eager to please
no spoilers but this book hits all the emotions and its one that you cant put down as you cant wait to read what else could happen to them
Wow, this is a breathtaking tale of love, friendship and revenge and it's written with such style!
Amy has lived with her fiance Josh for five years, although lately her work as an actress means she has been living in New York. On a flying visit for her best pal's birthday weekend, she lets herself in to their flat to discover evidence of another woman in residence. Leaving it all she turns up later to find it all gone and Josh - strangely - his usual self. Leaning in for a hug from Mel - aka best pal - at the end of the birthday party she realises the scent pervading their home belongs to none other that her best two-faced friend.
From here on in the heat cranks up considerably and it is very hard to put this book down! One after another, the groundwork is laid to get payback and we find ourselves voyeurs on every scene. It's a bit like hiding behind a curtain as you watch a joke you're a part of play out, but without being spotted - and it's brilliant! Along the way, we learn about the back story to Amy and Mel's friendship as well as keeping up with the revenge list playing out, and I could not read fast enough to find out what happens next. I can honestly say this is unique to any other novel I've read and I'm so glad I read it!
Exciting, unpredictable and such fun to read this is one I'm very happy to recommend. Give yourself a break from all the serious and gritty murders and read this one .. it's so worth it!
My thanks to Michael Joseph/Penguin Random House and NetGalley. This is my honest, original and unbiased review.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. Love this author absolutely brilliant read about friendship revenge and hate would highly recommend
Did not want to put it down, really great story, wicked funny, sad everything a good read should be. Great characters you really cared about
I loved this book,.
Amy returns home from working in New York to find someone else has been living in her home with her fiance while she’s been away. What I love about this book is that instead of running away to start a new life, tail between her legs, she grabs life by the horns and plots revenge. This book is light, funny and super easy to read.
It's a true saying you keep your friends close and you enemies even closer, especially when your worst enemy turns out to be your best friend! Like most females I been there, done it, got the T-shirt and taken the photo. Betrayal is even worse when it comes from the ones you trust. Makes for a fascinating "can't put it down and don't want it to finish" read. This is the first Jane Fallon book I have read but it certainly won't be the last.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. It is written and fast paced. In fact, I started reading it before bed, but found that I could not put it down. Definitely a page -turner. The story is about a woman, Amy, discovering that her fiancé is having an affair with her best friend, and what she does when she finds out. I really liked the way that the story mixes memories of Amy's past and her relationship with her best friend with her new understanding of her friend's true nature. I loved the way that Amy was not a victim, and her acts of revenge were sometimes inspired. I would recommend this book as a fun and fast paced read.
I absolutely loved this book! What a story of love and betrayal, with bucket loads of laughter and disbelief along the way. I loved Amy, hated Mel and Jack, adored the friendship and loyalty of Kat and Greg. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and would recommend to anyone.
Well that was a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the characters and it's gripping, but like the love child of a thriller and a romantic comedy. A real page turner for me, I'd definitely recommend it!
Loved, loved, loved this book! Well written and on that kept your attention throughout!
Amy comes back from her acting life in America for her best friends birthday only to find that her fiance has another woman staying over in their flat. The flat is clean and tidy and some of the stuff in the case looks oddly familiar. Eventually Amy works out that the other woman is M.elissa.
The toxic friendship that they have sees them battle to see who can do the most damage whilst Jack, her fiance, is unaware of any problems. This is a tale of female friendship both good and bad and makes interesting voyeuristic reading. A real gripping page turner.
When I first read the blurb for this book, I was unsure how the story would stay interesting through to the end. Oh how I was pleasantly surprised. A brilliant story of love and friendship, the good times and the bad. I think everyone would recognise traits in their own friendships and it was a joy to work through them with Amy
I wanted to enjoy this book, but after awhile started to skim it, as the protagonist felt so vindictive. I did persevere, but felt flat after reading it. Felt like a study in how not to handle a breakup.
Another fabulous Jane Fallon book - devoured it in a couple of sittings!
Fantastic read. Funny and page-turning. Was totally gripped.
I've read several of Jane Fallon's previous books, but unfortunately I found this one a little lacking.
The premise is good - Amy returns from New York to find out her fiancé Jack seems to be having an affair. Then comes the crushing blow: the other woman is her best friend. She doesn't let either of them know she's aware of their betrayal but manipulates them both from a distance.
Although I enjoyed reading this book, I felt slightly disappointed with the way it ended. The revenge tactics seemed to escalate throughout the story, but the final showdown wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped.
I also found the character of Simon rather frustrating. In a story where most of the characters seemed very believable and real, he came across as quite one dimensional.
All in all, this is a good light read - nothing too taxing but certainly not fulfilling enough to warrant a higher rating.
