Brilliant Brilliant Book!
I love Mandasue Hellers writing, she has such a slick yet fast paced rhythm that drags you through the story whether you want to stop reading or not.
Her characters are mostly flawed, as we all are in real life, which in turn helps to connect you to thier vulnerabilities flawlessly.
Save me is a fine example of this, although a teeny bit predictable in places there are plenty of twists to keep the pages turning and the story moving along swiftly.
Ellie just wants a quiet happy life, like she had before the accident but her life was about to explode in a most terrifying way. A kind hearted girl, all she wanted to do was help the man, to stop him from taking his own life. A decision she would come to regret with every waking moment.
A great way to spend an afternoon (and evening) curled up and just escape.
I am a massive Mandasue heller fan and I have been for many years so has always I couldn't wait to get my teeth stuck into this beauty. We all know and love Manasue’s books being known for what I call grit lit genre. So if you are expecting the whole bad boy gangland drugie saga you might be disappointed. Mandasue takes us into a whole different world with Save Me where we meet sisters Holly and Ellie but still telling the story of love relationship, control and revenge and betrayal giving the reader a totally new dimension with this storyline. Which I freaking loved!
The story grabs you from the start and keeps you there until the very end taking you through a whirlwind of emotions. But then has the plot thickens I was a nervous reck I can not begin to tell you that the tension build up is amazing…...yes it is full of OMG moments. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough wanting to know what was going to happen. Just when I thought I had it all worked out things took a turn that I wasn't expecting.
I love how no one in this story is what you think they are for example Holly who made me laugh at the start with her sarcastic comments which I found funny and they made me laugh out loud then has I got to know her I was actually thinking OMG as if! You will understand what I mean when you read it yourself.
Ellie is a nice kind person throughout story we see the relationships she has with people and them taking advantage of her kind nature.Boy did this make me angry and get my back up.
Personally I think Mandasue has made a good move writing something that is totally different to what her readers are used to and still making it tense and gritty but in a different way. I honestly think this book is ace and I am gutted that I have finished it so quickly because now I have to wait a year for another one LOL and I cannot wait to see what Mandasue has in store for us next.
I highly recommend Save Me for fans old and new giving it 4.5 stars
I was excited to read the new Mandasue book but have to be honest and say I was surprised at the type of book this turned out to be. It seems like a bit of a departure from the gritty gangland style books she normally produces and leans more towards a psychological thriller.
Ellie Fisher is introduced to us on her commute to work. She has no idea that her day will change when she attempts to help a young guy named Gareth who is attempting to take his own life. In the meantime she is dealing with her own problems with her husband Matt and her Mother and Sister. The thing that struck me most about this book was that I disn't actually like any of the characters which is unusual. Ellie seems to be downtrodden and has almost zero backbone. Although I felt sorry for her it seems like she just doesn't have the strength to be anything other than a doormat. On the other side of the fence we have her seemingly controlling and frankly abysmal husband Matt who I just wanted to smack for most of the book.
That strange sensation aside, what I realised was that in a strange was I was thoroughly enjoying this departure in style. It's certainly different to her previous stuff but although I disliked the characters I felt the need to keep reading. Although this doesn't have the edge of your seat type tension running through it there is a dark element which seems to be present almost from the beginning. I read this in one sitting and although initially I was thinking it wasn't as good as previous stuff, I ended up really enjoying it. I also didn't quite see the ending and found myself being pleasantly surprised. Overall, different but I think good different.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Characters drew me in from first page. Such an easy read and found myself shouting at the characters to see what we as readers could. As always she never disappoints and thoroughly enjoyed the book. Although not
As gritty as some of her other novels I’ve read I would still highly recommend it as I couldn’t wait to see how it ended. Where it went and now so disappointed I’ve finished it. Top read #netgalley #saveme
I have enjoyed a lot of this author's books but this one was a major disappointment. I didn't like this one in the least. At first it seemed as though the plot would be very interesting when Ellie saves a young man from committing suicide and is faced with a jealous, possessive, insecure husband. Ellie is secretive because Matt is controlling but I found her nauseatingly stupid and gullible where men are concerned. It was bottom of the social barrel stuff and vulgar. The dialogue was also sub-standard. I took exception to the use of bad language especially the C word and pray this will not turn into a writer's epidemic like the F word. There were some ugly scenes between Ellie and her sister Holly which became tedious. I hate arguments based on spite, jealousy and old wounds. Its only saving grace was that it shows how things can escalate with just a lie; even a lie of omission.
Mandasue Heller is always a good book choice. Her style of writing is gritty, yet her characters are grounded and believable. Save me is a great book, with a good plot, setting and just enough twists and turns without being over the top crude and violent. Definitely, recommend this book.
This is the first book of Mandasue Heller’s that I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it.
I did work out that all was not as it seems fairly early on but the story still kept me gripped, right until the end.
Ellie and her sister Holly have a volatile relationship but by the end of the book they have to be stronger than ever for one another.
There is someone who is a threat to their family, and they are obsessed with one of them, and you’ll find yourself turning the pages faster and faster to find out how it ends.
This is a really good read and one I’d recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan for sending me a copy to read and review.
Mandasue Heller succeeds again with a thrilling read which will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Ellie and her husband Matt survived a bad car crash but Matt sustained injuries which left him unable to return to his building career. As a result he became depressed and unjustifiably jealous of his wife's movements.
One evening Ellie is heading home from work when she notices a figure about to jump to his death from the railway bridge - little did she know that this incident would change her life forever as she goes to his rescue.
Great read both thrilling and exciting you won't want to put it down.
Ellie Fisher misses her train home, bringing her into the path of a stranger Gareth who is going to take his own life. Ellie puts herself at risk, saving Gareth and in turn causing more ripples in her own life. Her controlling husband is suspicious, her colleagues take advantage of her good nature as does her sister who is utterly vile. All actions have consequences and Ellie is about to discover just how big an impact one kind deed can have on her life and those around her.
It has been a while since I read a book that grabbed me pretty much from the get go and it wasn't due to the knowing something bad was coming. The relationship dynamics infuriated me, I wanted Ellie to deal with the selfish horrible people in her life and put them in her place. I think depending on your family life and personal experiences will depend on how much that part of the story will impact on you. I was so infuriated I could have flung the book because I was so angry at how much Ellie allowed people to walk over her. The more I read and the more things happened I got so exasperated, then you have the violent side. Things start happening, you don't know who to trust or really what is coming next.
I have always enjoyed Heller's books, I didn't even look at the blurb when going for this book so it was a bit different from what I expected. It isn't her normal estate gritty type book, this is relationships, families, stalker type vibe with violence, suspense and building up page by page. 4/5 for me this time, available to buy from 28th December this year, my thanks to Netgalley.
Spine chilling. This thriller had me gripped from the start. Ellie talks Gareth out of committing suicide and her life changes for ever. Ellie's marriage is not a happy one and circumstances escalate its decline. I do not want to give away any spoilers. Overall the book is brilliant. A very well written thriller full of action and suspense. Some of the plot is a bit obvious but that did not take away any of the suspense and cleverness of the writing. I would definitely read another book by this author.
I am a fan normally of Mandasue Heller novels but unfortunately not this one. The main character Ellie Fisher saves a man, Gareth, from attempting suicide whilst waiting for her train. Elle is in an unhappy marriage with fractious family relationships and a dead end job. Gareth suddenly seems to be everywhere but is he as innocent as he seems?
Unfortunately I could see where the story was going and it was predictable. Ellie isn’t a likeable character she does nothing to change her circumstances. I’m used to the normal protagonists being strong women and Ellie is anything but.
If you haven’t read Mandasue Heller before I wouldn’t recommend starting with this one.
Thanks to NetGalley, Pan MacMillan and author Mandasue Heller for a ARC in return for an honest review.
4.5 stars
another cracking read by Mandasue Heller. I have loved all her books and this one didn't disappoint. It was slightly different from her other books but just as enjoyable. I devoured this in two sittings and couldn't put it down.
This is the first Mandasue Heller book I have read, and I really enjoyed it.
Ellie saves Gareth's life one night when she finds him about to commit suicide. However, they have several more meetings and Ellie realises that Gareth may have become obsessed with her.
Plenty of twists and turns in this book, the reader is never quite sure of the motivations behind the characters and who is the actual 'baddie'.
I liked the complicated family relationships involved with Ellie and her sister, mother and stepfather, these added a lot to the story. However, I found the direction the story was going in slightly unbelievable and thought Ellie needed to wisen up and stop being such a sap! This was an enjoyable thriller which I would recommend.
I was so excited to be accepted to read and review Save Me, as Mandasue Heller is my favourite author, her books have never disappointed me, they have all been amazing, Save Me was an outstanding read, her best book so far and I have loved reading every one, now I've finished the book, I can finally breath as all the way through I was holding my breath and biting my nails, it was totally an addictive read and enjoyed every minute of it, her readers are going to be in for a right treat with Save Me, I highly recommend it. Well done Mandasue.
3.5* rounded up to 4*. Ellie Fisher misses her train home. She's all alone in the station. Then she sees Gareth, a young man about to Tahoe his own life. Ellie convinces Gateth not to jump. Ellie's life is no bed of roses either. Has Ellie unwittingly put her life in danger, or is the real danger closer to home.
I have read all of Mandasue Heller's booksand I've loved them all, but not this one. I did enjoy it but not as much as the others. I guessed from very early on where this book was going. It lacked the usual edge of your seat read Mandasue normally produces. The plot line is believable with a mixture of strong and weak characters. The pace is nicely set. I look forward to reading her next book.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Pan MacMillian and the author Mandasue Heller for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was thrilled to be asked to review Save Me by Mandasue Heller having being introduced to her books earlier in the year with Run. Save Me is one of those books that I could not put down and I was drawn in from the first few paragraphs with the discovery of a body in an abandoned house. We are then introduced to the main player in the story Ellie Fisher as she saves a young man (Gareth) from throwing himself off a bridge into the path of a train.
This book was unusual in that I really didn’t like a lot of the characters, I mainly wanted to give them a really good shake or slap them around the chops! Ellie is married to the controlling Matt and is oblivious (brain washed) to his flaws and stuck in a dead end job. Her sister Holly is a little free with her affections to put it nicely and always putting Ellie down. Gareth appears to be Ellie’s knight in shining armour but as we know these guys sometimes end up being an asshole wrapped in tinfoil!
There was a lot of tension throughout the story and I kept waiting for Ellie to open her eyes and realise what was happening around her. Save Me is a story about obsessional love, lies and secrets - all of which build up to an explosive conclusion. I enjoyed this gritty thriller and would definitely recommend to fans of this genre and will be buying a copy for my mum who loves Mandasue!
I have enjoyed Mandasue Heller's books before, so was pleased to be able to read her new novel Save Me.
As ever, her novel did not disappoint me. It is a gritty book, with interesting characters. The book works at a good pace and even though just before the end of Part 1 I had figured out what was going on I still enjoyed this book and its conclusion.
I'm a long time fan of Mandasue Heller, I have enjoyed every one of her books and once again this latest book Save Me did not disappoint. What a brilliant book! easy to read, enjoyable characters and a gripping gritty story line. I read the second half in one go because I couldn't wait to find out how it ended. Thoroughly recommend.
