There is a lot of good information in this book. At times you are given step by step instructions. At times you will see her finished beautiful drawing with very little instruction. This would make a good reference book for a beginning artist. However, the beginning artist might need more than just this book in their library.
I received this galley from NetGalley.
This Big Book of Drawing by Lee Hammond is an awesome step by step instruction on drawing and was extremely helpful to me as I'd put my drawing on the back-burner for much too long, and had to start from scratch on re-learning everything I'd forgotten.
I definitely recommend this book if learning, or re-learning, to draw and understand the basics is what is needed. I did learn some skills that I'd not known before, which were very helpful in creating some really nice pictures that I now have hanging on my walls.
Enjoyed learning all the drawing teqniques described in the book and would recommend the book to others
This is a really great book for artists and those who want to improve on their art skills.
Makes a great gift
This is a well presented book, put together in a very orderly way. Starting off with graphic drawing and progressing to colour pencils, the focus, is to gives a very good explanation of perspective and light in drawing.
I found it easy to follow and the information was easy to understand. Lots of examples to practise on, although I am not a fan of using grids to start a drawing with, many people find them helpful. A very useful book for anyone wanted to explore drawings, as it looks at how to interpret people, animals, landscape, still life and fabric
Beautifully illustrated book full of amazing drawings and inspiration. Just opening it made me want to have a go. The authors drawing style is so realistic, just fascinating. The book offers huge value with a wealth of projects, reference material and bursting with illustrations. The instructions are clear and can even be followed by a beginner. A wonderful book to own and use. Thank You
Was allowed to read this book from NetGalley for my review.
Aother Lee Hammond Great Book!!! Easy to follow instructions for drawing beautiful illustrations. She goes step by step for many different subjects to draw. A great book for beginners and advanced artists alike.
Wonderful step-by-step instructions for both graphite and coloured pencil. People, animals, flowers and nature - I hope I will get better at drawing!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to review A beautiful book for those artistically inclined or wish they were. The simple drawings are broken down so that you learn to draw it yourself.! I like that some focus is given to “details” and “features” using a grid format. For example, drawing a nose or mouth or fur.
The book starts with graphite and then moves to colored pencils. I have myself been doing a lot of drawing with colored pencils and found the illustrations fascinating. The book covers a variety of subjects that will appeal to almost anyone. I look forward to reading this book again and again and hopefully improve my own drawings
If you haven't heard about Lee Hammond's books and you want to create realistic drawings, you have been missing out. She uses the grid method to accurately achieve realistic drawings. This is a time tested method that works really well, specially if you are a beginner and struggle with wonky proportions when drawing from reference (a picture or someone/ something in front of you).
The fist part of the book teaches the fundamentals of drawing using graphite and after that there is a huge repertoire of 3-step projects (if you own any of his previous books, it is the same style but new projects) of common objects, nature, animals, portraits, body parts, fabric and clothing. Part two tackles colored pencil techniques, followed again by many projects with relevant instructions and tips.
Keep in mind that the book focuses on teaching techniques to achieve realism from a reference (drawing from observation). This is not meant for those whose main focus is to draw from memory or learn art fundamentals (like perspective, anatomy, etc.) If you own the Big Book of Drawing from 2004, this one covers the same subjects with the good old stuff plus new tips and a different set of projects to work with. I would strongly recommend for art students and hobbyists alike. I got my eArc from NetGalley
It did not inspire me, though it covers all aspects of drawing by pencil.
Lee Hammond's All New Big Book of Drawing is a step-by-step tutorial to mastering realistic drawing techniques.
WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT?
Artists of intermediate and advanced skills will pick up many tips from this book. Though the sub-title of this book says it is for beginners, I think most beginners might struggle simply because the book does not cover some basics, e.g perspective.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT
Because the author is self-taught, there is a simplicity and directness to his tutorials. He makes drawing concepts simple and easy to follow.

5 Stars! I love Lee Hammond’s new book! This book has some really great tips & techniques that I found very helpful! I am awful at drawing but I like to do it anyway! Reading this book has helped make me less-awful than I was! I’m still not that great at drawing but I’m working on it! I’m reading through the book again and hope that will help make me better at drawing! I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to better their drawing skills!
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own!*
I loved this book. I could end the review there... but I want to say why. The book is a genuine attempt to help any beginner get to grip with how to draw well. It requires no more than pencils, paper, a sharpener, some blenders and - of course - some erasers... the first half focuses on graphite drawing, the second half on coloured pencils. You can use either part and you can add any additional materials you choose but the basics are within the remit of any beginner of any age.
Starting from value, shading, light and shapes, we work through textures like wood, metal, glass and fabric. There are very clear step by step examples of animals, people, still life and nature. There is much here to enable a true beginner (like me) to get a pencil, a few coloured pencils and start drawing. But there is a lot to enable intermediate artists to polish their craft - fabric and draping will take a while to master, I think.
Lee Hammond is to be congratulated for continuing to upgrade and improve her work so that we - as beginner artists - can benefit.
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley in return for an honest review and it is now my intention to buy the paperback as soon as it is released. It is that good.
Lee Hammond's All New Big Book of Drawing Beginner's Guide to Realistic Drawing Techniques by Lee Hammond is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary.
I love this book! It has so much for the beginner like me. There are almost 90 step by step exercises in pencil and colored pencil! She has always been one of my favorite artists anyway, but I am definitely going to buy this book! There are so many tips and techniques to show how to achieve realistic drawings from skin to feathers, sunsets to clothes, how to pick the right tool, technique, perspective, and so much more. Just reading this book made me feel more confident that I could do this with her instructions and practice. I really enjoyed the step by step projects. She broke it down and made the instructions easy to understand. This was such an exceptional book and a great tool for the beginner like me! Thanks!
Lee Hammond art instruction books have been classics for years. I have referenced them personally and recommended them when teaching drawing. This compilation is very comprehensive and anyone interested in learning to draw or refresh their skills should own this book.
When I saw this on Netgalley, I know I had to try to get it to review. I realized that I need the actual book to be able to sit down to learn this. If I had a copy on my ipad, it would have been easier for me to read it better tan in the Adobe Digital Editions program.
I love to draw and paint. I am always looking for a new book to learn how to make myself a better artist. My favorite chapter is Chapter 4 on Animal drawing. I have been looking for other animals besides wolf and dolphins to draw and paint. I would love to be able to draw our late husky so I could put him up on our living room wall.
I will need to buy this book in order to practice the techniques mentioned in the book. I also want to see about the author's other books.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this digital ARC to review for unbiased opinion.
A beautiful book for those artistically inclined or wish they were. The drawings are simplistically broken down so that you earn to draw it yourself. Of course, if it were that simple we would all be artists!
I like that some focus is given to “details” and “features” using a grid format. For example, drawing a nose or mouth or fur. The book starts with graphite and then moves to colored pencils. My daughter has been doing a lot of drawing with colored pencils and will find the illustrations fascinating.
The book covers a variety of subjects that will appeal to almost anyone. Thank you for allowing me to review this great book.
This is a quite complete book of drawing for beginners, that parts from the very basics (perspective, blending, shading etc.) and treats the various subjects as still life, flowers, animals, people, clothes and so on with graphite and coloured pencils. The author's technique is surely reliable after decades of practice and in this sense there is much to learn from this book, but in my opinion is not enough. What I do not like is the use of the grid that I personally abhore and the result, though flawless, IMHO lacks life and passion. It tastes artificial. So I would recommend this book only for the technical aspect for perfect beginners, but who wants to be real artist, please stay away from grids and learn to see and to draw free-hand with a free spirit!
I love Lee Hammond's books! I love her drawings & how realistic they appear. Lee does an excellent job at providing step-by-step instructions. This book covers both graphite & colored pencils. I would highly recommend this book!
