Orphan X was a great thriller set in the tradition of such as Lee Child and David Baldacci - The Nowhere Man continues the story of the mysterious Orphan X and his mission to help those that need it most. Loved the story and main character and will definitely be reading further books by this author
If you want some high octane, leave your brain at the door thrills, then this series is perfect! This second instalment sees Evan Smoak in some particularly unpleasant hot water after dealing with a people smuggler. What I really like about this book is the pacing - it never stops! Yes, there are a few quieter moments when we find Evan reflecting upon his life choices and the path he is upon, but primarily, he is kicking ass and taking names and I love it. Hurwitz's prose is clean and compelling and he knows how to maintain suspense really well. Evan is such an unbelievable character, but that doesn't mean you don't believe in him. It is true wish fulfilment fantasy that is well paced, well written and utterly ridiculous in all the best possible ways. If you love Lee Child or the Hitman games, then I would definitely recommend you give the Orphan X series a try.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This book doesn’t disappoint orphan x books just keep getting better - I am always on the countdown for the next one to come out and the story lines just keep me on the edge of my seat throughout
The second in the series proves there's no Smoak without ire. Having been captured for the wrong reason he is held for the right ones and the pace is relentless. For me it did sag and flag a little in the middle as it seemed to go round in circles a bit but a touch of speed reading soon had me back on track and the tension built to an explosive finale worthy of the character and with a surprise or two thrown in. I look forward to the next instalment.
I really enjoyed Orphan X. I feel that The Nowhere Man is not as good. I seemed to get lost in the long descriptions of Evans imprisonment and his fight to freedom. I thought it made it a tedious read in places. Hopefully I will enjoy the next book in the series.
Having read Hellbent, I went on to read the first in the series and then The Nowhere Man. I think the Nowhere Man is probably the best of the three. Evan Smoak is confronted by a seemingly unstoppable foe in René Cassaroy. The major part of the novel is taken up with Evan being held captive and his relentless drive to escape despite being thwarted at every turn. It gets to the point where (as a reader) you start holding your breath fearing once again Evan’s attempts will be scuppered. Two other active Orphans are hot on his trail, Jaggers and Candy McClure (the surname being very apt). Candy, uncharacteristically shows some emotion for one of Jaggers’ kills but it’s probably because of the greater disgust she has of him. A rip roaring page turner, hard to put down.
This is an intense, action filled thriller, the sequel to Orphan X, that picks up from where it left off. It will probably help if you read the first book to get a handle on this one. Evan Smoak, aka Orphan X and the Nowhere Man, was taken from an orphanage as a child by a secret and covert shadowy government programme. They trained him to be a highly skilled and efficient assassin. Evan eventually managed to escape the programme, but is having to live life under the radar. He has decided to use his specific skill sets for good, setting out to help those who desperately need him. A brutal Orphan from the programme has instigated a hunt for Evan, beginning to get closer to him. Evan has been kidnapped, drugged and imprisoned by a sociopath who specialises in stealing and blackmail. However, it would be a mistake to underestimate Evan, despite being imprisoned, this does not impede his ability to kill a number of bad guys. Evan is determined to save a 17 year old girl in a container. With twists and a cliffhanger ending, this is an entertaining, if implausible, high tech thriller where we learn more of Evan's past history. Many thanks to Penguin Michael Joseph for an ARC.
Gregg Hurwitz has done it again with this case action pact thriller. Evan Smoake is honestly one of my all time loved characters, a hard man who has your pulse racing in hope he comes out on top, he's complex and likeable and far from most one dimensional hard men in action thrillers.
I loved Gregg;s writing style which hooks the reader and draws them in on the action like you are there watching every page being written with anticipation on whats next.
Looking forward to diving right into the next book.
