I started this book thinking, juts another psychological triller about a missing person - but it gradually drew me in and I realised it was so much more. Kept me guessing - and changing my guesses - all the way through. And although I had an inkling what was going on, it still kept plenty of surprises in store which only added to the pleasure. As well as being an engrossing read, it asks some difficult questions about the nature of art and how far it can or should go - with no easy answers!
My mind has just been blown...totally unexpected twist of what I had going through my own imagination.
This has been so cleverly plotted and written it’s fantastic so much attention to detail.
I felt so much anger and sadness with her being kept against her will by a kidnapper away from the love of her life and her kids.....now I know different I feel such dislike for her almost hatred ..selfish is an understatement.
So clever, brilliant I can’t wait for another title by Natasha Bell.
A book about the disappearance of Alexandra wife and mother. It will resonate with a lot of women trying to get the life work balance right. It took me a bit of time to get to grips with the narrative but once I did I was hooked. It asks the question whether women can have it all and doing so at what expense. This a real page turner and kept me gripped to the end. I would certainly recommend this book.
When Alexandra Southwood vanishes it seems obvious to everyone apart from her husband, Marc, that she is probably dead, all the evidence points that way. But he can't accept that, and he's right. Alex is alive, held captive, all the time imagining how her husband and children are coping without her...
This is a highly enjoyable and original thriller that is almost impossible to review as everything you consider saying is a potential spoiler. So I'll only say this, it isn't a fast-paced novel by any means but the writing and characterisation are good enough to hold your attention even during the slowest moments. The twists, of which there are many, are revealed slowly so the big reveal isn't totally apparent until your almost there. The final reveal though was a little disappointing for me although had it ended with some of the crazier solutions I was coming up with I'd have probably been furious! This won't be for everyone as it isn't your straightforward thriller. But if you like a conundrum of a book that will keep you equally confused and entertained and make you think just that little bit harder you will certainly enjoy this.
What a fantastic, gripping page turner of a book. Thoroughly enjoyed this, so much so I didn’t ant to get to the end, but was desperate to find out what happened.
Exhibit Alexandra for me was a slow starter but it intrigued me so I kept on reading.
The ending tied up the loose ends and was an okay read.
Alexandra Southwood is missing, her distraught family left behind. But Exhibit Alexandra is no ordinary psychological thriller. Perfect for fans of Dear Amy and Her, this mystery tells a compulsive tale of family and manipulation that will keep you guessing right up to the dramatic conclusion.
An easy book to read which grips you from the very first page but the further in that you get the more complicated it gets.
I am not going to précis the story as it could give away some of its outcomes. I will say however that it does demonstrate the lengths some individuals will go for their art.
Very clever book with a very surprising ending.
What an ambitious tale. A wife and mother goes missing. Blood is found by a river. Assumptions are made. But is Alex all that she appeared. Her husband is in turmoil. Then the surprise. Which I won't spoilt here. Needless to say, I found this work similar to Gone Girl with a bit of art thrown in.
A compelling read, with as many twists and turns as the Monaco F1 route! Well written - if a little confusing in places - even when I reached the end I wasn't sure what was real and what was "art"...
The characters were well written, but I didn't actually like most of them - so it says a lot for the plot that I kept reading. It's made me think about how we all (to some extent) "give up" some of our dreams in order to fit in with the way our lives evolve - in the end it's how we accept that fact (or don't) that defines us..
Although I enjoyed this book, I think it's one of those "Marmite" reads.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in return for my honest review.
This was too slow fir me. It started off with her not coming home yet knowing what the husband was doing at home. I gave up .
This is very clever. Very different. I love art and I loved the concept of this. I don’t want to put any spoilers in so I won’t go into too much detail. But this is thriller about a woman who vanished into thin air. You follow her husband and children and it’s very believable. Do not hesitate to read this.
I love being teased by new formats. This was an intriguing read that had a pace and mystery set in what seemed to be a familiar matrix. Books about people who go missing or who are abducted are everywhere but early on one realises that this does not fit the repetitive genre. The twists that appear begin to invite the reader to make suppositions and guesses that instinctively one knows will be wrong. The final outcome is a surprise but no shock. A thoroughly enjoyable and engaging read.
There's always a terrible dilemma for the writer who starts a novel with great pace, engaging characters and all the makings of a real page turner - how do you bring such a novel to a satisfying end? Ms Bell's writing certainly sets exceedingly high standards in the first half or so of the book, where I defy any reader who is not irretrievably cold-hearted to read the emerging story and not be moved by the events that wreak such havoc on the lives of a husband and children who believe that their wife and mother has been abducted and probably murdered. Sadly, for me at least, the standard set at the beginning and in the middle of the novel are not maintained through to the end. As other reviewers have noted, the denouement is predictable and some key threads of the story are left unresolved. This is a crying shame, as there is a real talent displayed in much of the book. Unfortunately, it would seem that the desire of the author to invest her narrative with the sort of pseudo intellectual nonsense uttered by the eponymous missing wife has led to the trajectory of the novel falling short of its great starting potential.
What a great read! Intriguing full of twists and turns and events you don’t see coming. Won’t say anymore but definitely the story stays with you. One of the best reads of the year
Having read quite a few ‘missing person’ books, I was unsure what could hold me with this one. Natasha Bell has not only imagined a totally different storyline but managed to produce a geniune, gripping, page turner. I was in such a hurry to discover the ending I read long into the night. The characters of Marc and Alexandra were well conceived and I liked them both. I loved their relationship. The geniune excitement of having found each other and making a perfect life was totally absorbing until the fateful day that Alexandra went missing. The devastation on Marc and their children was overwhelming and the struggle to try and retain some degree of normality during the police investigation, media intrusion and well meaning acquaintances was almost impossible. As the story reached its conclusion, I admit I more or less realised the plot but this did not detract from the explosive ending. A great read.
I really enjoyed this book until the final chapters where it then became far-fetched. It certainly got one thinking though.
This book is so unusual. It tells the story of a man searching for his wife who disappeared leaving behind only some bloodstained clothing. Despite months of searching the police have been unable to find her. The plot is gripping , intriguing and fast paced and although I had begun to suspect what the plot twist was close to when it was revealed, it was still a deeply satisfying one. When I finished the book I immediately started reading it again with the fresh perspective I now had. An excellent read, both times.
With thanks to Netgalley and Penguin books for this ARC in exchange for an open and honest review. The story is narrated by Alexandra herself and it tells of how Marc and herself met, and the lives of their friends and family and how they are all coping with her disappearance.
A decent enough read, but I found it a little boring and in all honesty not my cup of tea.
Exhibit Alexandra is written in a unique, clever way, taking the unreliable narrator even further than what has previously been attempted. It's absolutely full of twists and turns, and although I guessed the ultimate twist, I was still desperate to finish this book.
When Alexandra goes missing, her husband Marc, and their two daughters, are left to pick up the pieces, wondering where she is, and what happened to her. I felt sorry for Marc, for what he was left to deal with, and, although I can absolutely relate to Alexandra, she is hardly a likable character. Bell's characters are deep and refreshing, and the story is absolutely gripping.
It's really hard to write a review on this book without giving anything away, so I suggest you grab a copy and find out for yourself.
