Fantastic biography. this is a well-researched and well-written book that I highly recommend for a historian or fashion lover either one will love it.
Susan Goldman Rubin chronicles the life of the extremely influential fashion designer Coco Chanel for young readers. I didn't know much about Chanel's biography, besides her dicey World War II period, and it was very interesting to learn about her childhood spent in a Catholic orphanage and her years developing and growing her young business.
Rubin also discusses Chanel's influential designs, from the little black dress, to the menswear inspired pieces, to Chanel No. 5. I read this slim volume in one sitting, and enjoyed every minute. The book itself is also quite lovely in its design, which is only fitting.
Refreshingly even-handed, flaws-and-all biography of a remarkably influential woman. I have several young patrons right now who are very interested in clothes and fashion, so I'll be happy to be able to put this book in their hands.
A brief and informative biography about influential fashion designer Coco Chanel. Perfect for someone looking for a concise and interesting book on the subject.
This is an enjoyable introductory essay to Coco Chanel that would be good for middle school readers. The pictures are a nice compliment and the length was right on.
A wonderful and comprehensive text that would be an asset to any classroom or bedroom.
Author Susan Goldman Rubin does a fine job of showing the rise of Coco Chanel against the social-historical background in which she lived. Born into poverty, she became a foremost fashion designer and the creator of Chanel No. 5 perfume. She worked during the rise of Nazi Germany and the occupation of Paris, and Rubin doesn't shy away from discussing her Nazi sympathies. At the same time Rubin takes time to explain Chanel's unique contributions to women's fashion and the exacting way she approached her work. Chanel actually pinned her creations to live models, making them stand for hours and often being stuck by pins. The result was her classic style. Photos let readers see Chanel's distinct approach to fashion.
