B. A. Paris returns once again with a deeply troubling psychological thriller following a couple and a woman, who disappeared 12 years ago.
Finn and his girlfriend Layla are in France before she mysteriously vanishes, leaving him to answer police questions over her disappearance. Fast forward 12 years, and Finn has settled down, about to marry Layla's older, much more mature sister, but suddenly bizarre events begin to occur, and they wonder - has she returned?
The entire book is unnerving, moving between several narratives and voices, first establishing Finn's version of the past and the present. And then soon after, another voice emerges, and you're left to question whether it really is Layla.
While you do get an inkling with 30 minutes left of the book about what could be possible - it is written so that the final reveal is still harrowing and shocking. Another gripping thriller from Paris.
I have read and enjoyed the author’s previous books so was pleased to receive this review copy from NetGalley.
This is a noir thriller which would suit fans of Girl on a Train or Gone Girl so if you like this sort of book you will enjoy ‘Bring Me Back’. If you have read BA Paris’s earlier novels I’m sure you will like this too.
The story is told from the point of view of Finn who is the epitome of an unreliable narrator. Can we really believe anything he says?
Whilst travelling back from a skiing holiday in France his girlfriend, Layla, disappears from their car whilst he is in the toilet. Twelve years later she is still missing and Finn is about to marry her sister Ellen. However all is not as it seems. We gradually learn that Finn has not been entirely honest with the police when telling them about the events leading up to Layla’s disappearance.
Then Finn starts to receive email messages from Layla and little Russian dolls that have a special significance to the sisters. It is only something Layla would know about. Is she still alive or is it some elaborate hoax designed to scare Finn?
Finn is not a likeable person. He is obviously capable of violence and will lie to anyone in order to save his own skin. Ellen seems very meek and mild, almost too good to be true and Layla’s purported voice in the novel makes her sound very disturbed.
This is an interesting read with many twists and turns with an entirely unexpected denoument which I found quite difficult to accept. I really had to suspend my belief when I reached the climax of the novel.
I expect this will do very well when it is published as there is a great appetite for these sorts of psychological thrillers at the moment.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc in exchange for an honest review.
A very gripping read. I was hooked from the start. Although I guessed the outcome early on, I still enjoyed it.
This is a superbly written, quality book. I knew after the first half page that I would love it. In 3 parts and you are never quite certain what actually happened or what the final outcome will be until later in the story. Moves at an excellent pace with just the right amount of descriptive text so you get to know the characters. With this type of book you always hope that the ending will not disappoint and will not simply be a fight /murder. This book has a clever, satisfying ending and is entire book is one you not should miss.
Disturbing.
A book that builds towards a chilling and unexpected climax.
Although I had some suspicions about what might be the cause of the sudden apparent return of Layla, I couldn't figure out how 2 such incompatible persons could live in the same body. Thus i dismissed my idea.
But it turned out that I was both right - and wrong.
A well written novel with a nicely judged ending.
When I saw that B A Paris had a new book coming out, I knew I had to read it ASAP. This book is no exception from the usual totally gripping and messing with your head writing style. Totally addictive and just couldn't put it down. I would highly recommend. My thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for the advance reader copy.
I have read the authors previous books and loved them so I was really keen to get stuck in to this one, it had a lot to live up too as gave the previous two books by the author five stars! Well now I have read it, I can honestly say I absolutely loved it, easily five stars - I read it in one sitting, with a hot drink, chocolate and a big don't disturb me sign!
The pace was brilliant, it gripped me from the outset and I raced through the pages as I NEEDED to know what happened - a great story, well planned with exceptional writing which I have now come to expect from this author!!
Five stars from me - loved it, such a brilliant book and already looking forward to the next book from this excellent author!!
Fast paced thriller with a great twist at the end!
Definitely an author I’ll be reading more from.
A really gripping thriller, full of twists and secrets, slowly revealed to build up the tension. I did not guess any of it! The main characters were well drawn. I'm not sure that Finn deserved the loyalty of Harry and the patience of Tony. The only thing I didn't like was that the final explanation at the end came in a lengthy descriptive email, which flattened it a bit. Maybe a flashback would have been better? However, highly recommended.
Another great book from B A Paris. Nothing is quite as it seems. Lots of twists. Really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend.Thank you for letting me review this book.
This was a great book, I read it in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down. It had me hooked from the first page.
Many thanks to Netgalley and B A Paris for the copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
BA Paris never fails, I've loved absolutely every single book including this one. A Gripping, frustrating story that will keep you up late into the night. I couldn't put it down.
Bring me back is definitely a ‘cant put me down’ kind of book and although I worked out the twist fairly early I still wanted to see if I was right! The story centres around Finn, a man whose girlfriend goes missing, who is suspected over the disappearance but is never charged. Finn has now moved on and is about to get married to his ‘lost’ girlfriend’s sister when strange things start to make him suspect that his first love has returned.
Another highly enjoyable book from BA Paris!
This is a very complex, complicated unusual story. I began to get it near the end but it is full of twists. I found the ending moving but incredibly sad.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When I saw this available for request I jumped at the chance, I’ve read BA Paris’ previous book “Behind Closed Doors” and was so disturbed (in a good way) that I vowed to wait a while before I read another of hers.
On the way home from a ski trip in France, Finns girlfriend Layla goes missing, gone without a trace. Fast forward twelve years, Layla is still missing, presumed dead and Finn is getting married to Layla’s sister Ellen. When he starts finding little Russian dolls everywhere he is convinced someone is impersonating Layla or that she is back from the dead.
The tag line of this book is #ForgetSleep and it’s very apt. I was up until after 12 on a Tuesday night glued to this book. It’s filled with twists, turns and red herrings.
I would rate this 4 stars, great thriller! I think everyone will be talking about this in 2018!!
This novel took a while to really hook me but when it did, boy what a rollercoaster of a ride it took me on. It gripped me like a vice, swung me around and didn't put me back down again until the very end. What a story!
Many thanks to Netgalley for providing me with this ARC, for which I have given a voluntary and unbiased review.
I wanted to really love this book but in the end I just couldn't. It was an interesting more than exciting read and I managed to work out the ending about mid way through the story.
This is the story of Finn whose girlfriend Layla goes missing from a lay by in France during a holiday. Fast forward a couple of years and Finn is now living with Ellen, Layla's sister and they are planning their wedding. No one has seen or heard from Layla since she disappeared, the police believe she is dead yet no body has ever been found and everyone has moved on with their life....except Finn. Finn didn't quite tell the police everything that happened the night that Layla disappeared and he has kept the truth secret for years. But then one day Ellen finds a tiny Russian Doll sitting on the wall outside their house, identical to the one that Layla took from her when they were children and now she thinks that Layla is back...then come the emails to Finn and the other Russian Dolls that keep turning up, how soon before the truth about Layla's disappearance will be discovered?
This is more psychological that I was expecting and much slower moving that I liked, I literally had to fight the urge to skip forward to see what would happen as it seems to take ages for anything to happen. It's not a bad story and I would say give it a read if you want a couple of nights of an interesting read but if you like something more edgy and exciting then you won't be entertained by this.
Thank you to Net Galley for the preview copy in exchange for an honest review.
Excellent story line and great main characters. I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend.
I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is about Finn. Ten years ago he was on his way home from a break with his girlfriend Layla when she goes missing at a service station. Finn has never told the whole truth about what happened that night. Ten years later Finn is in a new relationship and he starts to receive indications that Layla might still be alive.
The story is told from two different points of view. That of Finn and that of Layla who both have their secrets. This was definitely a fast paced story with lots of twist and turns. There was no slow parts to the story. I guessed what was going on quite early on but I still really enjoyed the story and the satisfaction of knowing I was right. I have read B.A.Paris' two other books and loved them, she is becoming one of my favourite authors. #forgetsleep.
When I read Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris last year, her debut novel, I read it in just a few hours. My friend and I raved about how it was the best thriller we had both read in a long while and we talked about it for weeks. There is something about the author’s writing that is so gripping, that it doesn’t let you go until you turn the final page, almost as though it has put a spell on you, urging you to keep reading. Her third novel, Bring Me Back, is no different. The novel comes with the #forgetsleep and yes, you’ll lose plenty of hours sleep reading this novel. Immensely enjoyable and hugely gripping from start to finish. You do not want to miss this book. I would suggest having plenty of coffee on the go when you begin this book, you will want to keep sleep at bay.
Twelve years ago, Finn’s girlfriend, Layla disappeared without trace whilst they were on holiday in France. Layla has never been found despite a massive police search. Now, Finn is engaged to her sister, Ellen, but as they begin to make plans for their wedding, people close to Finn begin to report sightings of his missing former partner. Finn doesn’t want to believe that Layla has returned after all these years and he battles with his conscious over his decision to marry Ellen. Is he making the right one? What would Layla think of him when she realises that he has chosen to marry her sister? Has Layla really returned twelve years after she was reported missing and if she has, where has she been during that time.
Bring Me Back is unbelievably tense, you know when the author has great writing skills when you’re shouting at the characters on the page at the decisions they’re making and when you can’t bear to read on (for fear of what is to happen to them next) but your eyes are too glued to the page not to. I’m not going to say too much about the plot as I don’t want to spoil it, but we hear from the perspectives of two characters in this book. B.A. Paris gives us a clear, in depth look into her character’s minds and she certainly likes to play around with her characters heads. It is Finn who we primarily hear from. I was always a little on edge with Finn as I was reading and I could never quite be sure if I could trust him. When I came to the end of each chapter I wanted to find out more about the characters and what actions they were planning to take next, with each book that B.A. Pairs has written, each chapter always leaves you demanding more.
I’m sure, as with her previous book, I will be raving about this for a long while; I’m looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next. Bring Me Back is another belter of a read and I’m certain that it’ll be a huge bestseller. Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of the book to review.
