This is a great psychological thriller with so many twists and turns that you don't expect. A real page Turner you cannot put down.
What an amazing book. I read it in one day with only taking time to prepare and eat meals. Paris is a fantastic author and this is typical of her alluring approach. I loved the characters and although I sort of guess3d what was going on there was still surprises at the end. Keep the books coming please as this is an author who knows how to write and captivate the reader.
Finn and Layla are on a holiday on France when Layla disappears. Twelve years later Finn has started a relationship with Layla's sister Ellen. There starts to be sightings of Layla and then Russian dolls start appearing. These have a connection between Layla and her sister!
An unusual book, a study in mental breakdown, but who's breakdown you'll have to read the book to find out.
Finn and Layla are on their way back from a skiing holiday when she just disappears at a service station, Finn is frantic and calls in the police but she is never found. Twelve years later Finn is seeing Layla's sister Ellen,....but has he just settled for second best? After they announce their engagement strange things start to happen, little Russian dolls appear and Finn starts to get emails but are they from Layla..... everyone assumes she is dead!
A great psychological thriller you get really drawn in and can't put it down, and with so many red herrings thrown into the mix who knows where it will end up!
This is a chilling, psychological thriller, with layers and twists to keep the reader on edge. It features Finn, a man whose girlfriend, Layla disappeared 12 years ago. He gave an account to the police about the events leading up to her disappearance, but left out some key information to protect himself. Now living with Layla’s sister Ellen, life has settled down, but as they plan to marry, things relating to Layla and his past start to creep back into his life and threaten to unravel everything.
Told through the voices of all three main characters at different stages in the book, there is a careful unravel, that takes lots of different turns keeping you completely on your toes. It is easy and compelling to read. Whilst the main characters don’t tend to do anything wrong or bad at the outset, none of them are quite likeable or completely trustworthy. There is a hint, an edge of something a little unpleasant about them. Because of this you find you’re not really behind any of them, making you a neutral observer. They have flaws like any and Finn’s insistence on doing things himself without engaging the help of others is frustrating. In this respect it adds tension that doesn’t abate, making it difficult to put down, but it probably was strung out just a tad too long for me, which makes it then become less believable and authentic. Notwithstanding this, it is staged very well, has a great unexpected ending, with a good after burn that thriller readers will undoubtedly enjoy.
This is the third book I have read by B.A.Paris and I have really loved all three of them.
Finn & Layla are coming home from a skiing holiday driving through France at night. When they stop at a rest area he leaves her asleep in the car to use the bathroom but when he comes back there is no sign of her. After a frantic search of the practically deserted place he reports her missing. Although suspicion falls on him there is no evidence to disprove his story.
Forward a number of years. Finn is engaged to Ellen- who happens to be Layla's sister. Although Finn loves her, at times he can't help but compare her to the livelier sparkling sister! As they begin to plan their future, strange things start to happen that seem to indicate that they haven't heard the last of Layla.
The author keeps the suspense going. I wanted to yell at Finn to stop being so secretive- the truth would have saved a lot of trouble.
I did guess the end but that didn't stop this being a great read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this terrific book.
Another page turner from a fantastic author. I had to suspend some disbelief at the end but the twisty-turny journey to get there was a lot of fun. However, be prepared not to live some of the, frankly nasty characters.
Plenty of twists and turns in the thriller. Very well written . I few predictable moments but that said I would definitely recommend this book and look forward the next novel. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to review it.
An interesting psychological thriller, good pacing, plenty of twists, enjoyable scene-setting; but the ending was just too unbelievable for me.
The story was told from the point of view of two characters - Finn, and Layla, who went missing 12 years ago on a dark night in a lay-by in France. Layla appears to have returned and is sending text messages and leaving small but significant items for Finn and his fiancée Ellen (who is Layla's sister), but is it really her or someone playing a cruel joke? Is she an 'unreliable narrator'? Of course, the truth is not revealed until almost the end and the author cleverly leads us to suspect one thing, then another, then another, casting suspicion on just about everyone.
The book has a small cast of characters and none of the main ones were likeable, and Finn in particular was rather selfish, controlling and emotional.
I enjoyed this book but found it a little repetitive on occasions and slow to progress during the middle portion of the book. Still a good read though!
If you like a story packed with twists and turns, where you think you know what's coming, but then you don't, this is one for you.
At first it seems all too predictable - a woman disappears, her boyfriend is the suspect but didn't do it...or did he? It seems he did, then that he didn't, then that he might have...but what did happen? This story leads you through the events that led up to the moment that changed Finn's life forever in the form of diary style flashbacks, while at the same time moving forward in his new life, with his new girlfriend. The concept is brilliant and I genuinely didn't see the end coming right up until the closing chapters, but this is how it's supposed to be I think - as readers we love shouting 'she's behind you!' at unsuspecting characters, we love to know more than they do, to have proven our genius, just not too soon!
My only complaint is that it's not easy to actually like either Finn or, when we learn more about her, his missing girlfriend Layla. He hasn't exactly covered himself in glory in the past and now behaves in a way that's just the wrong side of - wrong. His obsession rules him, yes, but it doesn't really excuse his every decision and action. I'd like to have seen a little more genuine torment, please! The end however is very satisfactory and ties it all up neatly in a beautiful circular bow, a very clever thing indeed.
When Finn’s girlfriend, Layla, goes missing on their journey home from a skiing holiday in France, the finger of suspicion falls on him, but twelve years later and with no further clues to Layla’s disappearance, Finn has moved on, but then, strange things start to happen which upsets the balance of Finn’s ordered life.
What then follows is an exciting page-turner which has all the hallmarks of this author’s exceptional writing. Her meticulous attention to the connection between people, and her fine observation of human frailty, is captured in this emotional story, which is rich in detail and alive with malice. The multiple story strands, which move backwards and forwards in time, gradually reveal a dark story of lies and deceit and as we get further into the nitty-gritty of the story, so the chill levels start to rise.
I raced through Bring Me Back at top speed as the concise chapters lend themselves to speedy reading. And as the story evolves, so the need to know more about what’s going to happen next gets more and more gripping. Over the course of the book, I tried to second guess where the plot was taking me, only to have it veer off in a completely unexpected direction.
There is no doubt that this talented author has captured the domestic noir genre to perfection and her ability to control a complicated plot whilst holding the reader’s attention, from start to finish, is to her credit.
Bring Me Back is a taut and tight psychological thriller with more than enough suspense to keep you guessing from beginning to end.
3.5* read.
I quite enjoyed this, despite my frustration at the lead character and the, at times, meandering storyline. The beginning is very strong with a girlfriend who goes missing at a truck stop and picks the story up 12 years later. This premise of a missing person, who, 12 years later may still be alive, kept my interest and I enjoyed the twist at the end and the short chapters written in the voice of the main characters.
The middle is slow, but, I think this is a good, easy holiday read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins UK for the opportunity to review.
I finished reading this book at 2am which is a good indication of the quality of the writing and plot contained within the latest suspense thriller from B A Paris. I have read all of her books and each one has been of a very high standard, but this one has to be the best so far. If you enjoy a captivating read combined with twists and turns from start to finish then this is the book for you. The format is one that has alternating chapters which switch between the perspectives of the 2 main characters. This works particularly well on this occasion and adds to the overall suspense. I can't wait to see how this quality is maintained in the next book.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Overall this was a good read. I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I had not worked out the ending. I have read the first two books by this author and I thought they were better than this one. I thought that this book was not totally believable and that made it a disappointing read in places.
I have read and enjoyed the last two books by this author and was really looking forward to reading this. It started off really well and had me hooked from the first page but I thought it started to lose itself in the middle. There was lot a of repetition and I found myself starting to skim paragraphs. Maybe I have read too many similar books but I guessed the outcome.
Wow!!!
What a book!! Every chapter is full of twists and turns and just when you think you have it all figured out--- another twist just to prove you wrong!
This is the first book I have read of hers but after reading this one I went straight onto Amazon and ordered both of her other books :-)
That is how good this book really is!
Now I just need to patiently on the postman! :-)
Absolute MUST read for 2018, just make sure you have a whole day free as its impossible to put down once started!
This is the third book by B.A. Paris and by now, it's safe to say that you're pretty much guaranteed a quality read.
This book was really enjoyable. Full of the twists and turns you come to expect from the author. I did figure it out quite early on, but i think that says more about my suspicious mind, than it does about the quality of the author's writing.
An interesting concept, but unfortunately this just didn't work for me. I'm struggling to explain why without giving spoilers. Also there are a lot of positive reviews so I think it's a matter of personal preference.
Having loved B.A. Paris’s Behind Closed Doors I couldn’t wait to read Bring Me Back. The writing style if fab, very fluid and gripping at the same time leaving you unable to put the book down. I absolutely loved it all the way through - but, for me, the ending wasn’t quite what I had hoped and left me a little disappointed - or maybe I just needed more questions answers. But still a solid 4 star read.
Many thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Finn is slowly trying to re build his life after his girlfriend Layla disappeared on holiday 12 years ago.
He is now in a relationship with Ellen who is also Layla sister, all is going well until............
A great gripping read from B A Paris.
When a doll appears on his doorstep which has significance to Ellen and Layla the questions appears is Layla still alive.
I enjoyed the book as it flips from present to the time of the disappearance and investigation. And a good twist to the end.
