A classic psychological drama with secrets and lies and a husband who was not who Nuala thought he was. A fast paced thriller with a very complicated plotline and a bit difficult to follow for me.
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
I was provided with a copy of this book in return for an unbiased review.
I love a good psychological thriller and this didn’t disappoint. Dark and tense throughout, leaving you wanting more. Excellent writing that makes you feel like you know the characters and their secrets.
Gripping and would recommend.
A gripping, thrilling read that I was gripped to from the first page. I felt at times I was on a roller coaster so much was going on. I utterly loved this book.
A good page turner, gripping, tense and well written. Some of the characters were a little hard to believe but overall a great read. James was married to Nuala and had no contact with his family and told Nuala never to contact them herself but after James' death Nuala felt she should let his family know and find answers to why he was so against the contact.
Some secrets should stay buried.....a great piece of fiction
The person who wrote this book has a really dark look on life. An eminently easy to read book that starts out after a family tragedy. As the story unfolds, it draws the reader further into a murky world of small village and trapped living, then a nightmare and explodes into a psychological twister at the end. Great book.
Never go there was a great book with many twists and turns that hooked me in from the first few pages. My first by this author but I’ll be looking for more of her books now.
Never Go There by Rebecca Tinnelly was a fast-paced tale and I really enjoyed the twists and turns. The basic premise involves our main character, Nuala, who, after her husband dies, goes to visit his family - whom her late husband warned her to NEVER visit. This premise allowed me to become immersed in the family dynamics and storyline from the get go. Loved, loved, loved.
I found this book depressing and sad but rather well written and really had to finish it just to find out exactly what was going on.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an electronic arc.

James Greene died from a brain aneurysm, leaving his naïve young wife Nuala completely bereft. Nuala is a sad character, even in the beginning of the book. With no friends or family (her parents died in a fire when she was young) James had persuaded her that they needed only each other.
Even when they married, James didn’t invite his mother and told Nuala that they didn’t get on and that she should on no account ever seek out his family or go to where he came from. So, of course, that’s exactly what she does when James dies and she realises she has no-one in the world to share her grief with.
What she encounters is a cast of extremely well drawn and very unlikeable characters, living in a small village somewhere in Somerset. James’ mother Lois is a particularly carnaptious woman. Booking into the local hostelry, Nuala fails to find a warm welcome from either our hostess, Maggie, or her god-daughter, barmaid Emma, both of whom had known James well.
Never Go There is told from the perspective of these three characters and is a dark and unpleasant story of abuse and dysfunction. The writing is good, strong, compelling and certainly propulsive and the plot is very twisty. A well thought through tale of the consequences of prior deeds coming back to haunt you, this is certainly a twisty and riveting story line.
But not liking any of the characters didn’t quite work for me, even when I could see why these damaged characters are as much of a car crash as they are. That combined with a dash of too much naivety, left me wishing for a little more light and shade amidst the unremitting gloom.
Kept me gripped till the very end. Not read this author before, but will read more. twists and turns at every corner. thank you for the opportunity to read and review. its very much a privilege
I enjoyed this book. There were twists and turns that made me want to keep reading and meant I finished it within a couple of days. I still have a few questions Id like to ask the protagonist though. After 6 years of marriage she knows nothing about her husband?! I think id be asking my husband before I tied the knot let along let it get that far.
I liked the premise but I cant say it had the most believably plot, and that's something I do often look for in thriller sand crime.
What can I say about this book but wow I really enjoyed loved the storyline I couldn't put this book down. I thought I knew what was going to happened then bam a twist comes brilliantly written. I liked the characters was expecting what happened loved this book.
Nuala has gone to the village her husband was raised in. She wants to meet his mother and let her know he has died. In this close knit village she meets Maggie, the local landlady and her goddaughter, Emma, who has carried a torch for James for the past 7 years. Unfortunately Nuala does not get the welcome she wants and soon blood is spilled.
What a read this was. Fast paced and a tiny bit predictable but great all the same. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This is a debut novel with lots of twists and turns. There was a whole host of characters in this book with personality traits that you hate and love. I always try and guess what's happening in a book but I couldn't work it out.
This was hard to read at times but very well written. I kept changing my mind about characters, at first liking them then hating them or for others it would be the other way around. it's hard to say much in this book without spoiling it. I would say this book is about family and trust and all through the book is loneliness.
Thanks goes to the publishers and net galley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Nuala Greene has lost her husband to a tragic accident that finds her in his home town, tracking down his Mother to break the news. Nuala has never met Jame's Mother before, isn't even certain that she knows he exsists, because James has vowed never to return to his home town.
Nuala doesn't know why, and in her heart she knows that she should leave things well alone. But she can't help but wonder, what if anything James was trying to keep a secret from her.
James Greene (or James Lunglow) may be gone, but he is certainly not forgotten in his home town. Seven Years ago, circumstances forced him to leave the place he grew up in and start a new life in London, leaving those behind who cared for him.
Some more than others.
This is a hard novel to go into too much detail about, without giving anything away, so I won't. But I will say that none of the characters in this novel are particularly likeable, in fact I'd even describe some of them as thoroughly unpleasant. But I think this plays to the overall atmosphere of this novel, that is quite dark in places.
It is an impressive debut, and I look forward to the author's next work.
An amazing book that from the start I was hooked. I thought that Nuala did strange things at times bot often with good motives. All the characters were well described and I really felt a bond with them. The story has many twists that kept me trying to guess the ending and dramatically failing. I often wondered what small village life would be like and now I do. I would resist a move to a close knitted village where everybody knows each other’s business. The story was full of suspense and covered many topics that are frowned upon in a very easy to read way.
A fantastic debut novel and I look forward to reading future novels by Rebecca.
This is a gripping psychological thriller.
Nuala was devastated after the sudden death of her husband, James.
During their marriage James persuaded Nuala they only needed each other. When James dies Nuala has no one to turn to so she decides to look into his past.
Nuala decides to stay in the local pub owned by Maggie, who James was close to as a child. However, we soon find out that James had to escape the village after a local scandal which has repercussions.
This village is far from sleepy and the title of the book, Never Go There, is very apt for Nuala as there are secrets and lies just waiting to come out.
This is a dark thriller which I really enjoyed.
Thanks to Hodder and Stoughton and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Plot: After the unexpected death of her husband, Nuala makes the decision to go against what he’d always begged her not to do and return to the place he grew up to follow the mystery that is his past. It’s only once she arrives that she begins to uncover truths and secrets that reveal a story and a man she doesn’t even recognise.
My thoughts: The description of this plot had enough keywords like “secrets” and “truths” to get me intrigued, and the plot itself definitely delivered on these promises. The life of a small village in Somerset very much appealed to me as the claustrophic and insular environment reminded me very much of villages around me – they’re not necessarily as pretty as they seem! This was an addictive and twisty read that kept you going to the very end, though in parts was a little predictable. Definitely recommended.
A story of villages keeping secrets, and never been able to fully escape your past, Never Go There is in the main a good read. There are lots of twists and turns, one of which I never saw coming in any shape or form. My only issue is it felt long which at 300 pages it really shouldn't have. There seemed to be a lot of filling which is a shame as there was a lot more to learn about the characters that we never find out. I felt that there was a lot more story to tell. That aside it is a compelling if somewhat disturbing story.
