I was so looking forward to reading this book due to the write up and hype about it but unfortunately it didn't really work for me. There was lots going on and plenty of twists and turns including one at the end that I didn't anticipate at all. However I found that I could not like or identify with any of the characters. For me, they didn't have any redeeming qualities and nothing that made me root for any one of them. The two main characters Nuala and Emma were obviously vulnerable individuals but I wanted to shake them to say why are you still pining after a man who called you stupid and idiotic and was obviously very manipulative. The book was also very 'dirty' and by that I mean not clean....the pub, the houses, the people - I wanted to take a scrubbing brush to them all.! I find it hard to really enjoy a book if I cant at least warm to one of the characters and there was not a single one for me in this book. A disappointing read for me unfortunately.
Never Go There by Rebecca Tinnelly was a very dark tale full of suspense that gave me the chills. When Nuala's husband dies she decides to visit the village he grew up in. James had warned her never to go there but she ignored his advice. This psychological thriller is a story of secrets, lies and deception and has many twists and turns. I would like to thank NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed reading Never go there. It is a dark and fast paced story with quite a few twists.
This is book contains two stories one of a young lady, Emma, daughter of a powerful and abusive man who has total control over a rural village and those living there and also one of another young lady, Naula, a lost soul looking for someone to help her overcome great loss.
I found this book difficult to read and finish. The plot didn't hold my interest, I needed to know more befriending hooked in to the plot. The characters didn't seem likeable and I didn't root for anyone. Sadly, although it sounded a good book, it wasn't for me.
This is a fantastically fast paced story that keeps you guessing and gives you twists and turns, ups and downs throughout. I was engrossed from the very beginning and it certainly held my interest right till the end and left me wanting to find out what happens to one of main characters next! If you love a good psychological thriller which is also quite dark and tramatic throughout then you will love Never Go There.
Dark, compelling, addictive, with a twist that will leave you stunned. Small village secrets, generations harmed, revenge at its deadliest
This was an average book about two young woman, Emma and Nuala who both had a relationship with the same man.
He is a very manipulative young man and his relationships are with very vulnerable woman whom he can control. He dies and his wife goes back to the town where he was born. The town where she was told to ‘never go there’.
Everything that happens stems from this and two deaths are the result. None of the men mentioned in the book are particularly pleasant characters. The woman are all victims of physical and/ or sexual abuse. Only The godmother seemed to have a happy marriage and who then falls apart after her husbands death and subsequently loses her son.
It is a down beat type of book with no redeeming characters to like or identify with.
An interesting premise, however I just wasn't as invested as I should have been by the characters. I wouldn't consider it a killer twist, but it was definitely worth the read
I was looking forward to reading Rebecca Tinelly's book as it is based in an area close to me, The idea was good but sadly I did find it difficult to get gripped by the story. but it is worth a read if you have the time.
I had high hopes for the book, and I must admit that it was not easy to put down, but in the end I'm somewhat disappointed.
The book is very well written and there is a lot of suspense and unexpected twists. However, the book left me feeling depressed. There is absolutely nothing in the book that is colorful or happy. The village is a depressing place, the people uninterested in anything but drinking. There is a lot of spilled booze and dirt and vomit in the book. The main characters Nuala, Emma, James, Maggie en the others eventually start to behave all the same (I won't explain this in detail because of spoilers). Although Nuala is deeply depressed after the dead of James, I couldn't feel anything for her. I wanted to grab her and shake her and tell her the truth, and I wanted her to pick up her life and do something.
And despite the suspense and the unexpected twists there is something missing in the book. But I will let decide each reader that for his or herself.
Thank you NetGalley for this book.
A psychological thriller with twists and turns that are unexpected. Most of the characters turned out to be less than likeable and I felt little sympathy for them in the end which unfortunately didn’t make me like the book. Well written but rather too dark for me,
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and loved that I didn’t guess till the end. Was a very sad topic but unfortunately very real and shows the damage for generations afterwards. It is a must read
Following the death of her husband Nuala visits the village he came from. James had always told her to never go there but Nuala goes all the same. She is hoping to find a level of understanding from James' Mother. She actually discovers that James wasn't the man she thought he was.
The concept of this book was good. I liked the ideal that Nuala was going to discover a totally different man to the man she thought she knew. The ending was also good with a great twist. I had a fair idea that the final big twist was coming but the author wrote it well and it made sense.
Unfortunately, the major problem with this book was the characters. They were just not likeable. In fact some were worse than that. There wasn't anyone that I cared about and wanted to see come out on top. Some of the characters had no redeeming features at all particularly James and his Mother. This made it harder going than it should have been. A few more redeeming characteristics that would have made me care about the characters would have made a huge difference to this book.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley.
This is a brilliant read ! The characters are dark each with a twisted background and the twists and turns ensured once I started this book nothing was getting done until I'd finished . If you love a psychological gripping read this is for you .
This book was a real let down from the beginning.
The book was very confusing and it was not the gripping read I thought it would be. I really do not want to waste my time reading it sorry.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. This was a great book with lots of twists and turns.
When Nuala travels to where her recently deceased husband grew up and made her promise that she would never go there.
Alone 6 months later Nuala decided to ignore that and visit. After meeting his mother and her having no idea that her son was married there are many twists and turns as she discovers her husband is not who she thought he was
Wow! This book was a roller coaster ride. Gripping and twisty all the way through. Perfect read for anyone looking for an edge of your seat read.
Superb!! There thats it, joking but first things first this is a superb book.
A couple of unusual things, firstly one of the main characters, Maggie, is described in such a way as reminded me of someone I know....Maggie! This is the first time I have had this, where I ‘saw’ someone I know as a main character in a book and was different for me as a reader but it actually enhanced the book, I do hope ‘Maggie’ never reads this or indeed the book!
Secondly a lot of the book is set in a village in Somerset, this to me was fascinating as we lived ( me begrudgingly ) in Somerset for 6 years and when we first moved there we lived in a village called Queen Camel, so again I pictured Queen Camel as the village in the book.....
So, the book
WOW.... its dark, fascinating, disturbing, enthralling, shocking, tense and fabulous
It deals with, amongst other things, murder, obsession, lust, alcoholism, rape, incest, physical abuse and thats just the ones I can say without giving the game away!!!
Some chapters made me stop, think woahhhhhh and have to re read to make sure I had got it right
The writing is truly sublime and wonderfully descriptive without disengaging the reader and the characters so wonderfully portrayed in all their darkness ( and occasionally lightness!! )
The story flows from page 1 and the twist ( some dont like that word but tough there is a massive one ) is so good and so breath taking you will be in awe of the writers mind to create it!!
A wonderful, explicit, unforgettable book which will stay with you long long after you finish it
5 stars 10/10
A twisty thriller that goes into new territory - it's not your run of the mill thriller about a marriage gone wrong. A woman goes on a trail into her husband's past and well, it doesn't go well is an understatement. I can't say the characters were likeable and Nuala was too darned obsessed with finding things out than was good for her. It all got a bit too much for me but I had to read on to find out what she was going to discover. So, a mixed bag for me, but it does make you read even if you want to tell the characters to just think for a moment before they act. Wouldn't be a thriller then though would it? And to be fair if someone tells you not to do something, your instinct is often to do just the thing they're saying not to!
