If I ever died in tragic circumstances, I think this is how I would react to being dead. And from the moment this book begins it begins an emotional tale of death, loss and recovering from that.
The writing from the start is just emotional and draws you in. I’m not sure if our protagonist is meant to be exactly likeable, but then I feel she is very human for how she is portrayed in this book and you grow to like her as the story unfolds - I think that’s part of the rollercoaster that is this book.
The plot is strong and the story heartbreaking and warming in equal doses and really keeps you reading. Shrimpton creates a fantastic debut novel that pulls you in from the start, I think it might be a highlight of 2018.
Sunflowers in February follows the story of a twin, Lily, who has woken up on side of the road and has no memory of why she is there.
As she slowly realised that she is looking at her own body and her head is at an unhealthy angle and that she must be dead.
Stuck in limbo, Lily wants nothing more than to talk to her family and her twin brother. One night her brother Ben wakes in the night and it looks like he can hear her.
An addictive read that beautifully portrays the loneliness of being stuck on the outside of your own life
When Lily walks out of her life and into yours, be ready for a journey that you will not expect. Lily, is an extraordinary protagonist on an extraordinary journey; with a family, which melts your heart. The bond of sibling love is portrayed through an excellent combination of an omniscient narrative voice, which guides you through their trials and tribulations that occur with a death of a sibling and a unique twin connection.
'Sunflowers in February', will move you, warm you and make you love and appreciate those around you. What a truly beautiful tale.
It will definitely engage and move a young teenage audience. if you are looking for a Birthday gift next year, any teenager would want to pick up this book. I will definitely be ordering this for my school Library.
What a beautiful stunning yet sad read. Having lost someone special to me I did find this book hard to read at times. LIly wakes on the side of the road dead. Throughout the story she has to look down on her life and watch it dissolve into something without her. Her twin brother then gives her a second chance to live through him. This shows lily just what she is missing.
At times I did find Lily’s character irritating and child like in a spoil way. This didn’t hinder my enjoyment of a very well written novel. I believe this novel is going to be loved by many different ages
A soul searching, heartwarming and totally devastatingly beautiful tale of family, love and forgiveness.
Emotional, compelling and absolutely beautiful.
