How we've missed Lou Clarke! As with all Jojo Moyes books, you are straight into the action and a strong sense of place is already established by the end of the first chapter. Fun and frivolous but always with an underlying message. Can't wait to read more!
Yes!Lou Clark is back!Blooming loved 'Me Before You' and 'After You'.This book looks fantastic and can't wait to read about Lou's adventures in New York
Oh, how I enjoyed this sample; it is engaging from the opening line, and made me smile, laugh, and cry all at the same time as we become re-aquainted with Lou as she arrives in New York on for a new job. The opening gambit - a seemingly simple conversation with a customs official at the airport - sets the scene so well as Lou explains why she is in New York, briefly shares what happened with Will, and vows to put his advice about not holding back and saying yes to things into practice. Indeed, by the end of this conversation, you are refreshed on the events of 'Me Before You' and 'After You', and, probably, if you hadn't read them would know enough to be able to enjoy this book. The descriptions of Lou's first impressions of New York are wonderfully evocative, and, as it's a first person narrative, you can imagine yourself in the taxi looking out over Manhattan for the first time. Similarly, the description of the apartment building gives you a sense of location, and you build up a vivid picture in your head of how Lou views the place and her new surroundings.
I loved Lou's description of American television with its "859 channels...on an ever running loops of American football, adverts for digestion issues or badly lit crime shows", her early morning meeting with the housekeeper, and her walk through the streets looking for a coffee shop - the closing lines as she finally sits down to her coffee made me laugh out loud.
Based on this first chapter alone, I can't wait to read the rest of the book. We haven't even met the mysterious Mr & Mrs Gopnik who have employed Lou, and we aren't actually told why Mrs. G. needs a "companion", so it will be interesting to find out who they are and what the are like as people. Similarly, there is lots of potential for Lou's vow to "say yes to everything", and this could lead to some happy/funny/emotional moments depending what she gets herself into. As the customs man tells her, "be careful what you say yes to", and this could be wise advice.
For a first chapter: well written, engaging from the off, funny moments, wonderfully descriptive settings, and the knowledge that what follows in the rest of the book should be highly enjoyable. I look forward to reading the rest of it. Highly recommended.
Gah!
I realize that one should never start a blog with “Gah!” (unless one’s name is Bridget), but I offered to read the first chapter of Jojo Moyes much awaited Still You and now that I’ve read it I’m already completely hooked, and I have to wait until the end of January to read the rest? What was I thinking? I can go back and read the first chapter over and over, but I don’t think that will cut it.
My review last summer of After You, the second book in the Me Before You trilogy, mentioned that Louisa Clark hadn’t quite found herself the way Will Traynor would have liked her too. Will – Lou still needs you! She now has travelled across the Atlantic Ocean to the Big Apple to “say yes” to new experiences. An early caution of “be careful what you say yes to” possibly foreshadows that Lou’s travels may not go the way she plans. Of course, this is Lou we are talking about so the reader knows they rarely do!
The setting is a familiar one to me, being an American and living near New York City as a kid. It is fun to picture unconfident, clumsy, British Louisa navigating both the city and circumstances she finds herself in. This includes a new cast of characters and, happily, the return of Nathan, her previous tie to Will.
Did I mention I still miss Will?
I will impatiently wait for the release of the rest of the novel and hope that the Louisa Will fell in love with will re-emerge. I miss that Louisa too.
Thank you, Ms. Moyes, for the opportunity to preview this early edition proof chapter. Thank you also for writing Lou and Will into the world.
I absolutely loved Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. It is one of the very, very few books that made me cry and not just a few years but proper ugly cry. That might not sound very good but the story was just so very beautiful and, well, let’s just say that I loved it. So when I heard that a sequel was coming out I was incredibly excited and keen to read After You.
I actually read and reviewed After You by Jojo Moyes for a magazine, which was very exciting in itself but if I am honest the book did not live up to Me Before You. So, when I then heard that there was another book coming out in the series called Still Me I had a moment of worry that it also wouldn’t quite live up to the first book, but I still felt very excited about it and again desperate to read it.
So when I had the opportunity to read the first chapter of Still Me by Jojo Moyes I jumped at the chance. It isn’t a very long chapter but it was enough to tell me that I have to read this book! The main character Lou is off to New York for a new job caring for a lady having been recommended by Nathan, who was a character that I loved in the first book, so it was great to see him back. We follow Lou as she arrives in New York, finds her new home and goes out for coffee. Quite simple really but Lou is such a great character that she makes it readable and not only that but interesting and something that I wanted to keep reading.
Perhaps reading the first chapter wasn’t the best idea because now I have to wait to read the rest!! If you loved Me Before You by Jojo Moyes then get very, very excited because a treat is coming on 25th January 2018. If you haven’t read Me Before You then go do it, you have time to read that and After You so that you too can look forward to the release of Still Me too.
Oh my word. I usually don't read serialised novels and sampler chapter but I'm so glad to have read this one!
Lou is back, chatty as ever, I adored her conversation at the airport, and I was already hooked in her adventures in New York and there are going to be plenty there, I'm sure! It was a great opening chapter that left me want more and I can't wait to read the whole story. I've already felt like being with an old friend again, and Lou's plan to say "yes" to new things seems like a great one. I also can't wait to get to know Lou's charge, the mysterious Ms Gopnik.
So roll on, publication date! Looking forward to reading the novel.
Louisa Clark is about to embark on a New York adventure. A new job and a new life are waiting and she has promised herself ( and the memory of her old boyfriend, Will ) to dive right in.
Louisa is determined to say "Yes" to new experiences.
We all hope there will be many of these and I, for one, cannot wait to find out more!
I can’t wait to hear more about Louisa’s adventures in New York. I’m already captivated by her story and finding out more about the Gopnik family. I love the description of Manhattan. It totally summed up my feelings when I visited too “a sight that was so familiar from television and films that I couldn’t quite accept I was seeing it for real”
I was engrossed in this book from the start. I finished the first chapter eagerly wanting to read the rest of the story and find out how Louise life turned out, if she found happiness with Sam or if she met the man of her dreams in America
Wow I loved The first Chapter of Still Me, I’m soooo looking forward to the full book being released next year as I was so disappointed to read it quick and then couldn’t carry on reading. It is definitely going to be another great book by Jojo Moyes.
I'm so excited about this book having followed the story from the beginning. In it we find Lou embarking on a new chapter with a job in NYC. Can't wait to read the whole story.
One chapter in and it already feels as though I am back with friends. Lou is still overflowing with emotions but is determined to say yes to something new every week. She is now in New York, after a quirky encounter with immigration, ready to meet her new companion.
Already Jo Jo has made me laugh and brought a lump to my throat and that was from the first chapter - cannot wait to read the rest.
This is a very short taster of the third book in this series about Louisa's life. I find the ditsy character of Louisa annoying and this kind of writing, with quite silly humour underlying serious issues, is not my favourite. However, having read the first two and seen the film, I will definitely read the whole book to find out if she and Sam get together in the end.
GIVE ME MORE! GIVE ME MORE! I NEED MORE! I am even more excited for Still me than before
I absolutely love all of Jojo Moyes books and like many would probably rate Me Before You as one of my all time favourites. When I heard there was going to be a sequel I was initially wary but couldn't resist reading and while After You is a much sadder read I still very much enjoyed it.
I was overjoyed to hear we were getting a third book and from the first chapter sampler I really can't wait to read it. It seems like Louisa has turned a corner and while she's by no means over Will she's more or less back to her old self, positive attitude and fashion sense fully restored. I love how Moyes somehow managed to refresh our memory of everything that has happened so far in such a funny and lighthearted way. I'm sooo excited that she's in New York and that Nathan is back in the story but I'm also really looking forward to the new characters. If Ilaria is anything to go by I think the relationships between them are going to be interesting.
I've never read any Jojo moyes before so I was pleased to try something different. The start of the book was interesting and I look forward to reading what happens to the main character Louisa in New York.
I know this book is a follow-up to others that Jojo has written, but you don't need to have read these to enjoy Still Me.
The book is light hearted and easy, funny and the main character likeable and realistic. I will definitely look out for this one on publication.
Only the first chapter sample so no proper review yet. Already though Lou ‘Lizzy’ Clark is worming her way back into my psyche. I have such a soft spot for Lou et al. and hearing her voice again through the tender and funny writing of Jojo Moyes is just wonderful.
A heartfelt thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Random House UK for providing this advance chapter in exchange for an honest review, I can’t wait for the whole book.
This is the third Lou Clark novel and it promises to be just as brilliant as the previous books .Louise is now in New York working as a Companion for a Multimillionaires wife .The first chapter sees her settling in to her new home and getting ready to start her new job and trying to keep a long distance relationship with Paramedic Sam .I can't wait to read the rest of this book as it promises to be just brilliant .
Loved, loved, loved it. Instantly I was transported back into Lou’s world. I felt the same sadness she did when she talked about Will. I actually cried. And then I laughed at the things she said, just typical Lou. I can’t wait to read about the rest of her adventures in New York. Five star recommendation.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Jojo Moyes for the opportunity to read a copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
Jojo Moyes you've done it again!
I have only read a sample chapter of this book and I am counting the minutes until it comes out in January. Everything I loved about Me Before You is in this opening chapter - we are reminded of the events of the last two books in a very brief 'catch up' that doesn't feel forced or like we are being reminded. Louise Clark is, quite possibly, one of my favourite fictional characters - her brightness, sparkiness and funniness overflows and we are entertained from the first.
Hurry up January! This book is at the top of my reading list and publication can't come soon enough
