Excellent tense legal murder mystery set around the seemingly straight forward guilty verdict at trial. Our hero the defence lawyer with a back history of course sets about his case zealously and with his adversary the never beaten prosecutor holding all the cards a twisting story slowly unravels with shock twists all the way. Very violent but gloriously entertaining!
Finished this in two sittings. I was already a fan of the Eddie Flynn series, and it literally gets better with every book. Starting off with the best hook I can remember seeing in years, it's a full on rollercoaster, with every chapter ending somewhere you can't just leave, and you absolutely have to turn one more page. Love the chapters from the point of view of our main antagonist - creepy and compelling. As for Eddie, it's a welcome return to his fast thinking and faster talking no-nonsense approach. Without a doubt my read of the year so far.
Really enjoyed this book. A great serial killer / legal thriller. I hadn't realised this was part of a series so can confirm it can be enjoyed as a standalone. however I will now seek out other titles by this author on the basis of this strong read.
Before I started this book, I had never read any of the other books in this series. What grabbed me was the blurb and a lot of recommendations from my friends.
Eddie Flynn is a defence lawyer, good at what he does, he has made a name for himself, whilst annoying the NYPD. When Robert Solomon gets arrested for murder, Flynn gets an invite to be on the defence team. With all the evidence stacked up against Robert, Flynn knows he has a fight in court. But the further Flynn investigates, he quickly comes to realise that it is not a simple case of murder.
From the start you know that Joshua Kane was a master of his work. Everything he did was planned to finest detail. He was one of the cleverest serial killers I have read about and I did have an admiration for him.
The story swaps between Flynn and Kane’s story, there is no confusion as Kane is in 3rd POV. This helped the story flow and you learn about the character’s in detail. This story is fast paced and the tension builds throughout. I do not read many court room drama but I found this intriguing, even down to the jury selection and after I found out what they have to go through to get selected, I admired Joshua more.
When I am reading thrillers I like to guess where the story was going, but with this story I was wrong in every case. The story was well plotted and there was a lot of detail to the story. Even if you have not read the others in the series, you do not miss out on any of the story as this can be read as a stand alone and for me a good introduction to this author’s work. An intriguing plot and a must for thriller lovers and you will get to find out why thirteen as there are only twelve on the jury.
Wow - fantastic book. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Not having read the first two books in the series, I wasn't aware of the back story but this didn't matter at all. I will definitely look out for the other two now though. Great story with a nice twist to the end - highly recommended.
A totally gripping, powerful novel with about a serial killer and how he tried to escape justice. I found it hard to put down,
wanting to read it until it’s conclusion.
Whoa! This book should come with a warning – don’t start right before bed! I stayed up late reading and then had to catch my breath after putting it down. A slick, fast-paced legal thriller that had me racing through the pages to find out what was going to happen.
The POVs are intriguingly set between the lawyer and the murderer, so you really feel the tension snapping. The main character is lawyer Eddie Flynn, who’s hired by a major law firm to handle the case of Bobby Solomon, a high-profile actor who’s accused of murdering his wife and bodyguard. The story is mostly set within a court, which could easily be flat and dull, yet Cavanagh has managed to make exciting and taut. Especially knowing the killer is on the jury…
Gritty and dark, this is no light read, although it does manage to mostly stay away from being too gory. A perfect example of a powerful, psychological thriller. I didn’t realize there are other Eddie Flynn books until reading this one, and I’ll be heading over to Amazon to download the others right away.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for letting me read Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh in exchange for my honest review.
Kane is the serial killer, and Flynn is the defense lawyer. A Hollywood star is on trail for murdering his wife and head of security, he is not telling the truth but does that make him guilty. Flynn takes on the case and quickly discovers there is more to the case then meets the eye. At the same time someone is taking control of the jury that will surely find Flynn's client guilty. Brilliant from start, would recommend. Plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. But who will win Kane or Flynn....
okay, so this was such a good book! it was gripping and weird all at the same time!
i know this is part of a series but i had no issues reading this book alone, so this means that you have the option to either read them all of just one book!
the idea that the series killer was on the jury blew my mind! the plot was so sos good. i 100% have to pick up more from Steve cavanaugh and in general read more crime thrillers!
* thank you netgalley & orion!*
I don’t normally read novels set in America or written by American authors. Something to do with the prose which I find grating. However this one is the exception. I found it galloped along at a cracking pace, full of twists and turns right up to the gripping finale. I did not want to put it down.
Mainly set in the court room where Eddie Flynn, con man turned lawyer is defending Robert Solomon for the murder of his wife. They were Hollywood’s golden couple but was all as it seemed on the surface? Robert swears it was not him but everything seems to be stacked against him. Can Eddie discover the truth?
Eddie Flynn is a lawyer who used to be a conman, likes to cut corners and especially likes to surprise the establishment.
Joshua Kane is a killer who is determined to get on the jury for the murder trial of Bobby Solomon, an up and coming film star.
Thirteen is told in dual narrative, with Flynn narrating in first person and Kane's point of view being narrated in third person. Occasionally they narrate the same scene from different perspectives, which is either quirky or repetitive. But for the most part, the action is pretty arresting and the novel drip-feeds information to the reader piece by piece. There are red herrings, there are puzzles and games. And there's also an improbably high body count.
Thirteen is, I guess, supposed to be a bit of fun. Nobody would believe that a serial killer like Kane would actually exist; whether it is his inability to sense pain, or his lack of apparent motive, or his ability to support himself with no visible means of income, or his ability to "sign" his high profile murders without being noticed, it is not an exercise in reality. Whether or not the reader enjoys this is likely to depend on whether disbelief can be suspended long enough to go along for the ride. I just about managed it and am glad I did.
Yes, the novel is corny and cliched, It does rely on a killer with almost supernatural capability (except for the occasional Scooby-Doo style clue left lying behind), and it does rely on Eddie Flynn being able to spot these blindingly obvious clues that other, more illustrious investigators have missed.
It is also worth saying that this is the fourth book in the Eddie Flynn series - a fact that I did not know when I accepted a galley copy of the text. You wouldn't really know except, perhaps, Flynn's back-story is a little thin - presumably having been covered in previous novels in the series.
Pace-wise, this is a fast read for a novel that is not short, The chapters are short and snappy; there is an insight into jury selection and jury politics that is not common in murder-thrillers. And though the twists and tricks are corny, they are well done.
If you like this sort of thing (and I do), it is a solid four star read. If you want something more authentic, try Sergio de la Pava.
Wow.....yet another stunningly brilliant legal thriller from Steve Cavanagh.
For me Eddie Flynn can do no wrong, his arguments in the court scenes are breathtakingly good and with a mind as sharp as a tack he can really think 'outside of the box'.
Eddie has been persuaded to act as second chair by a big law firm acting for the defence of a film star accused of killing his wife and friend. What no one knows is that the serial killer responsible has gone to great lengths to be selected as one of the jury so he can influence and manipulate the other jurors to ensure this innocent man is found guilty.
I will say no more as any spoilers would spoil your enjoyment. There are many twists that come thick and fast and the tension increases to great heights with heart pounding moments.
My eyes need match sticks today as I just had to finish this book last night and that's a rare event for me! This would make a brilliant film.
So many thanks to net galley and publisher for opportunity to review this book honestly.
Eddie Flynn is a lawyer with a difference. His personal experience in life put him ahead of most lawyers because he knew both sides of the law, from experience! Eddie was a good conman before he become a good lawyer. Flynn was asked to assist Carp in the defence of Bobby Solomon, a world famous actor accused if killing his wife and head of security. Unfortunately Bobby couldn’t verify his whereabouts at the time of the murder and the evidence was a bit odd, but the prosecution were going to convince the jury of Bobby's guilt.
Many, many twists to this story. I must admit that at first I struggled to get into this book at first, but once about a third of the way in, when you get a feel for the characters the story picks up and runs. I couldn't put it down. You need to know who Dollar Bill is and how he's got away with everything for so long.
At last! A book that totally lives up to its hook! Thirteen has been one of the books most anticipated this year due to that tagline and I was concerned that I would end up being disappointed with the resulting storyline. But Thirteen completely blew me away! It’s a brilliant, cleverly constructed and utterly gripping legal thriller that has become one of my favourite reads of the year so far!
I hadn’t heard of Steve Cavanagh until I received one of his books in my goody bag from Theakstons Crime Writing Festival a couple of years ago and I had such looks of envy thrown my way that I knew I just had to read it! I will say now that this CAN be read as a standalone novel, although I have all the previous ones in this series I have only read one, so knock yourself out and grab a copy of the book EVERYONE is talking about! This is a top notch legal thriller featuring Eddie Flynn, con artist turned lawyer who is brought in to help defend Hollywood superstar Bobby Solomon who has been charged with the murder of his beautiful actress wife. There is a fabulously quirky cast of supporting characters but my absolute favourite was Joshua Kane!! What a wonderful creation he was! Devious, intelligent and with a real talent for his “craft” I couldn’t help but be mesmerised by his dedication to achieving his goals!!
Steve Cavanagh is an amazing writer! He totally hooked me with this storyline and all the threads laced together perfectly to create one of the best fast paced thrillers I HAVE EVER READ! In fact, his books are probably the only ones in this genre that really, REALLY work for me and this is definitely his best work so far. If you’ve never been a fan of the legal thriller genre then this is the book that will make you about turn BIG TIME!
What a tagline! What a book! What do I have to do to get the next Eddie Flynn book ASAP?! Highly recommended by me!
Really original plot in this fast paced thriller. First book I have read from this author but will definitely be looking out for others. An extremely enjoyable read that kept me gripped from start to finish with its brilliantly illustrated characters.
Brilliant thriller that had me gripped from the very beginning. I read it in a couple of sittings in just a day it was so gripping. Great ending that still kept you guessing throughout

I have not read any other of Steve Cavanagh's Eddie flynn books but this book lets you dive straight in without worry ( And i shall be checking them out now ). Great if you like books like the da vinci code Eddie Flynn feels like the new Robert Langdon
So much potential but ultimately predictable and frustrating. Like eating a tasty but unfulfilling meal that doesn’t satisfy your hunger at all
This is the first Steve Cavanagh book I have read but it won't be the last. A pacy thriller with an ending I didn't expect. Loved it.
