This is an enjoyable legal thriller with a key difference from its counterparts also being the main plot - the real killer is on the jury.

A Hollywood starlet has been murdered; her young famous husband is the accused. All the evidence points his way.

Rogue lawyer Eddie Flynn is roped in to be part of the defence team - they say it's so he can pick apart police testimony but there are other motives in play. When things get even worse for his young client, Eddie is the one who has to step up and try to save his career and his freedom.

The jury is selected one by one (a fascinating process to me - we don't pick juries like that in the UK) and the murderer gets closer and closer to getting his own way...

Flynn is a great character. I didn't realise at first this was book four of a series. You don't miss much by jumping in now but there are references to Eddie's days as a con, which I'd be interested to see more of.

The plot/killer is a little ridiculous, yes, but it's entertaining and something I hadn't seen before, which I value. I'd read this author again.

I really enjoyed this book - it kept me hooked right to the end. I hadn't read any of the other books in the series but I was still able to read this one and enjoy it. I liked the main character and found the storyline engaging.

Very interesting, bizarre subject matter. Cleverly constructed and written. Wasn't sure until the very end how things would turn out. Gripping. .

A 5* recommendation for this book. An excellent plot that kept me hanging on every word. There were many twists and turns to keep the reader hooked. I couldn’t put this book down. Highly recommended.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Steve Canvanagh for the copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.

Having read no previous works of Cavanagh I was drawn into the premise of this book. A serial killer on a jury of a crime he had committed and framed an innocent man for. Being a crime but I had to read this book and I am glad I did. This book is a follow on in a series but reads perfectly well as a standalone. We see Eddie Flynn a defence attorney be called to help defend a Hollywood action star on trial for the murder of his wife and chief body guard in an apparent jealous rage. This book had action and you can't help but fall in love with Flynn- he has a lovable rogue nature. He's been bad but is now on the good guy path trying to help those he believes are innocent. He meets Bobby and when all of the other defence attorneys walked he stayed true. He's clever and is smart enough to follow evidence. With bent cops, the defence and a killer on the jury Flynn is fighting a losing battle, but a folded note left in the mouth of a victim he begins to piece together what really happens leading to a dramatic finale. I did not see the twist coming. overall a brilliant book and I am excited to read more of this author

An intriguing and fascinating account of a most conniving and cunning serial killer that will keep the reader guessing until the end. He remains undetected because he selects his victims with care together with a likely suspect that he frames with carefully planted clues. After indulging in his lustful desires over many decades he has orchestrated the triumph of his misdeeds. He has even engineering his way on to the jury on the trial of a famous Hollywood star that he has framed. There after follows the dedicated effort of the defence lawyer who struggles to unmask the unknown killer to prove the innocence of his client. A most thrilling story with the defence team facing death as the killer tries to hide his tracks.

When Bobby Soloman, a Hollywood star is charged with the murder of his wife and her suspected lover, lawyer Eddie Flynn is left high and dry by his law firm so decides to take on the defence role alone. Little by little pieces of evidence and DNA don't add up and Flynn realises this murder is not what it seems but is linked to a series of cases.across the country.. He has unearthed a potential serial killer and as the tag line says he eventually realises that killer must be on the jury. This was a gripping read that sucked me in deeper and deeper as each chapter ended. Yes it's unbelievably at times, yes things happen conveniently at the right moment but hey! this is fiction, but fiction on a truly brilliant !evel. I have never read anything by Steve Cavanagh before but I will be looking for his other books now. If you are worried that this is one in of a series, don't. I didn't know it was until I had finished reading and it is a totally stand alone story.

I don’t usually read this genre of books but wow has this book changed my mind.
It grabs you from the first page and is relentless so that you do not wish to put it down.
The story is brilliant and even the twist at the end was unexpected.
I did not know that there were previous books with Eddie Flynn in but it didn’t matter as this story stood alone but I shall certainly looking for Eddie again.
Brilliant can’t praise it enough.

I liked the sound of this book but I found it difficult to follow the story and sadly I gave up before the end. Will try to read again as it ticks all my boxes for a good book. Sorry

Thirteen is a crime thriller unlike any I have read before and I was genuinely hooked from the very first line to the last. I couldn't put it down.

Thirteen is the fourth book in the Eddie Flynn crime thriller series BUT you don;t have to read the others to read this one, as I haven't and I got absolutely fine with it. In this story, we meet Joshua Kane, a cold-blooded serial killer who is extremely clever and has been getting away with his crimes for years. He's arranging a place for himself on the jury of a high profile murder case so he can make sure an innocent man goes down for his crime. But defense attorney Eddie Flynn is called up last minute to work on the case, and he may be onto Kane.

Wow, oh wow. I loved this book! Not only was it thrilling, and bloody at times but it was also highly clever and suspenseful with the amount of court room drama as well as the actual physical altercations that happened throughout the novel. I felt scared for every character in this book because Kane was a killer like I've never read about before. He literally thinks of everything (almost) in order to get away with his crimes.

Every part of this book was written really, really well from Kane's POV and his terrifying way of thinking, to how Eddie Flynn worked out the different ways to prove that Bobby was innocent of the murder charges laid against him. Flynn has a confidence but not too much of a swagger that makes him instantly likable and someone who is easy to root for.

I don't want to write too much about this book because it is a thriller and you shouldn't know too much about all the goings on but trust me, read this book! It's fantastic!

Thirteen is by far my favourite of the series so far. Legal thrillers don’t get any better and with the tagline….What if the killer isn’t on trial? What if the killer is on the jury? I couldn’t wait to read it.

Eddie Flynn, engaging conman turned lawyer, is approached by Rudy Carp, official celebrity litigator, who has a proposition….would Eddie like to take second chair on a high profile murder case. Movie star Robert Solomon has been accused of murdering his wife and their security guard. Carp believes he’s innocent, framed by law enforcement. Eddie is initially undecided. He has plans to try and rebuild his marriage and take a safe job that wouldn’t put his family in jeopardy, as they had been in the past. It doesn’t seem a likely scenario as trouble seems to follow Eddie wherever he goes.

Eddie has already proved, with the cross-examination of a detective on the witness stand, that there is at least one corrupt officer in the NYPD. After retaliation by said detective and, after meeting Bobby Solomon, Eddie decides to accept Carp’s offer regardless of the fact he’ll take the fall if he fails to prove the evidence has been manipulated.

With alternating chapters from Eddie’s and Joshua Kane’s points of view, we know from the start who the villain is. But what we don’t know yet is his agenda—what motivates him or the lengths he’ll go to. Kane is an incredibly calculating, clever and chilling psychopath, and not only because of his extremely rare condition. He’s ruthless, feels no remorse and manages to stay one step ahead—with a little help.

The way the book is written, with so much attention to detail, makes the story very realistic. The reader is totally involved, seeing the proceedings, inside and outside the courtroom, from the jury’s perspective as well as that of the lawyers. There’s a lot going on with unexpected, misleading twists and plenty of action. Cleverly plotted, extremely well written, entertaining, with great dialogue and an original take on a dramatic courtroom thriller. I love the cover too.

I couldn’t resist clicking to request Thirteen on NetGalley recently when the publisher offered it for just thirteen hours, and I was thrilled when I was approved. I’ve been wanting to read this book for ages! I defy anyone not to be drawn to a book with the tagline this book has!

Eddie Flynn is called in to be second chair on a murder case. The accused is Hollywood movie star Robert Solomon, and the victims are his wife, also a huge star, and his security guard. There is so much more going on in this novel though when we find out there is a serial killer involved and he is on the jury!

This is such a fantastic premise for a novel and the idea that the killer is on the jury is so different and I couldn’t wait to start reading this book.

This is the first book I’ve read by Steve Cavanagh and I didn’t realise when I downloaded it that it was part of a series. It works fine as a standalone though, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything. The book was so good though that I’ve already bought the previous books and I can’t wait to read them all!

Thirteen is such a fast-paced and engrossing novel; it’s one of those books that made me begrudge real life interfering with my reading time! The book alternates between the defence lawyer Eddie Flynn and the serial killer Joshua Kane, which is brilliant and really makes the tension ratchet up at quite a pace. It was fascinating to see the cat and mouse game play out as we see things through each of their perspectives and wonder who will come out on top. The end when it came was so good and so satisfying, it’s definitely a book that will stay with me!

I feel sure that Thirteen will be in my top books of 2018, it’s so different from anything else I’ve read in this genre and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

As soon as I became aware of this book, with its subtitle " The serial killer isn't on trial, HE'S ON THE JURY," I just had to obey the urgent desire to get my hands on a copy of this legal thriller. Many thanks to Netgalley, Orion Publishers and the author, Steve Cavanagh for the opportunity to do just that.

My only concern was that this book is #4 as part of the Edie Flynn series, but thanks to other reviewer friends I was assured this could most definitely be read as a standalone, and rightly so. No doubt you'll enjoy this one so much you'll be eager to dive into the other books in the series as well.

With it's fresh, extraordinary, thrilling plot and brilliant characters that has the reader completely captivated and engaged, it's impossible not to get hooked! The author did such a fabulous job of keeping me on my tippy toes, creating soaring tension within me, holding my breath until the exhilarating conclusion!

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be RIVETING!

Highly recommended.

I have not read the previous books in this series but it did not matter. You are aware that there were others but this fact did not detract from the story in any way. This book is a cross between a courtroom drama and a police murder hunt. A fast paced story with so many twists and turns you do not see coming. I am going to sort out the earlier novels and read the series from the start.

First of all, I'll hold my hands up and admit that I committed the cardinal sin of reading book 4 in the series first. Oops!
.
Now, for the book stuff. I don't know how Cavanagh did that! For over half the book I was so sure I knew what what going on and then WHAAAAT! Then it was one twist after another. I loved it. I really like Flynn 👌 I rooted for him in the courtroom and even with his personal issues. He's just a good dude!
.
This is the first book I've read where I actually enjoyed the courtroom action. It played out really well and the technical speak was balanced out well with the competition between the prosecution and the defence, which was definitely entertaining, especially once the juror drama kicked off!
.
The bodies kept popping up and making our antagonist more unlikable 😒 and for once I was glad to see the killer get what he deserved 💪

This is a great read which keeps you guessing right to the end. The characterisation is excellent and it is not necessary to have read any others in the series although I ma certainly going to go back and read them now.
A legal thriller that spans States and decades, plays hot shot lawyers against the lowly defence attorney, add in a Hollywood star and the FBI and there is a real mix to the storyline.
Action orientated there is not a spare word in the prose. You may think you know where this is going but prepare to be wrong.

Hmm… The premise sounded interesting, for sure (the killer’s not on trial, but in the jury!). However, the execution made it a little too far-fetched to my liking.

I didn’t know the ‘Eddie Flynn’ series before—this is actually the fourth book, although it’s not a problem: it reads as a standalone, and whatever background you need to know about Eddie (ex-con artist, estranged family…) is mentioned soon enough for a reader not to be confused at some missing backstory. I also quite liked the character himself, who in spite (or perhaps because of?) his past displays a strong moral fiber, and doesn’t abandon his clients even when everything conspires against them. Maybe he had a slight tendency to boast sometimes, but nothing too bad.

On the other hand, many of the other characters were really one-dimensional, almost caricatures: the famous lawyer who pulls out as soon as the deal’s not so juicy anymore, the prosecutor who’s only interested in fame and winning all his trials, corrupt cops… I was hoping that things would go differently with the jury consultant, since Eddie and him didn’t like each other, but acknowledged their respective skills and made efforts to work together; alas, this didn’t come to pass.

Most of all, I had trouble with the killer’s part of the story. He was too much of a villain with everything going for him: special abilities, smart, always prepared, always one step ahead, with contacts on the inside, able to bug the lawyer’s office, etc. There were no flaws in sight, nothing I could really use to build hypotheses as to what would be his downfall… And yet, paradoxically, even with all those aces in his sleeves, Flynn was still able to guess he was on the jury. I think this would’ve gone down better for me if it had been Kane’s first time only; his plot is quite complex, and interesting. But as a repeat plot, it didn’t work for me—his successes vs. what happens in the novel don’t add up.

Writing: The book was a fast read, not difficult to follow at all even if you don’t know much to US law procedures. The writing style was OK in places, annoying in others (too many short sentences will kill the rhythm just as much as too many long ones). There were typos, too, but I don't know if I got technically an ARC, or the final copy; if they're in the final copy, it's not good.

This story has a unique twist, as the killer sits on the jury as someone else is on trial for the murders he committed. Even knowing this from the beginning, there were many twists as you try to figure out who they really are and what their motive was.

I have never read any of the Eddie Flynn series but found it very easy to get to know the characters and follow the story. I will definitely be reading more however, as Eddie is such a fascinating character.

A thrilling, intriguing story which will leave you gripped throughout.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
