So this is the third book in an on going series. Yes, I would advise you to read the first two. Also, saying that you'll love book one. In my opinion of course.
This is an action based book. Quite fast paced and as I said earlier you'll understand and enjoy it more if you read the previous two. It's about a team of bounty hunters becoming embroiled in a street gang in LA. It's a fast paced book with intriguing characters and some romance between some diverse characters.
If you love action and fast paced books grab this one. It keeps you entertained throughout.
Enjoy!
Love the book. First time reader of her books and while there are others in the series about Holt and team; can’t wait to read them too. Exciting, adventurous, riveting doesn’t seem to capture what the book entails. Can anyone say fun? These women seem to thrive in it while keeping their loved ones safe. I love how the romance between Quinn and Lola build and they find their footing with each other. I hope there are many more adventures that Ms. Thoma continues to write about all of them.
I look forward to reading more from this author.
This is my first time reading a Jesse J Thoma book, but since reading Data Capture it won't be my last.
Lola and Quinn are great characters and the building up of attraction between the two is lovely and very fitting.
The story is a fantastic mixture of romance with an added bonus of thriller, the tension kept me guessing, this is a book that i just couldn't put down. Excellent
Its the third in a series but you really don't need to have read the first two before this one..... but from this I am fascinated by the Holt and Isabelle story so will be buying 'Chase'
Would I recommend to others, yes 100%
As a fan of Ms. Thoma, I began this novel with expectations that were quite high and they were fulfilled by the conclusion of the work. The balance between action, romance and intrigue was well-executed and I wanted to know Lola. I was grateful for the reading experience and await more.
Have been a fan of Holt and the gang from the start, so happy they are back and getting better and better. A perfect book for winter night. The story moved fast enough without losing detail. A recommended read for any fan.
An honest review thanks to NetGalley. I love Holt and her team; it was nice finally being able to learn more about Lola. I loved Quinn and what made this book really special is we get to see and watch the characters from the previous books as well. It keeps the reader interested as the story progresses over Holt and Isabella, Max and Dubs, and the rest of the "avenger" team. I will recommend you read the first two books in the series before starting this one, but you won't be disappointed.
I love the world that Ms Thoma has created around Holt Lasher and her crew. I feel like I'm sitting on the edge of their warehouse wishing I could join in. This is the third book featuring Holt and her crew and focusses on Lola Walker and her developing relationship with an intriguing neuroscientist Dr Quinn Golden. In this episode, someone is threatening Holt's direct family and the one thing that is guaranteed to rile Holt is any hint of danger to her partner, Isabelle, and their child. This is a fast paced, thrilling, heart thumping book which drags you through some complex and clever plotting. It is well written and I find the characters and their interactions endearing and credible.
Recommended if you enjoy roller coaster, complex crime stories.
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley in return for an honest review.
First off, as other people have said this is part of a series. Now if you haven't read the other two, you could probably still enjoy this one, but it is much better if you have. I started reading this one and then stopped to go back and start at the beginning for my own sense of pleasure. I think it made me like the book more than I would have not doing that.
The author does a great job with the action for sure. And the relationship between Lola and Quinn had both a cuteness and sexiness to them, that was an enthralling combination.
Overall this is an entertaining series.
This is the third book in the Holt Lasher (and her team) series. It took me awhile to get back into the flow of the story, not so much because of the characters, but because of the back and forth and rapid dialogue that Holt and her team participate in. Yikes, it makes me tired just reading their back and forths.
In this one we get to meet a new character, Dr. Quinn (*snort* sorry...) Golden. She's a professor at a college where Lola winds up going undercover so she can figure out why Holt and her 'found' family are being threatened. Of course, this does have a romance part to it too, not just a really great thriller, and so Lola and Quinn find themselves falling in love as well.
I liked the change of scenery (most of the book takes place in LA instead of Rhode Island), and the plot is tight and interesting as usual.
We get to see the new relationship as well as the continuation of the older ones, and I thought that the balance between the two was pretty good.
And of course, all the comic book references, from Batman and Superman to Watchmen, was fun fun fun.
I was given this ARC by Netgalley on behalf of Bold Strokes Books.
I’m a huge Holt Lasher fan and the latest edition doesn’t disappoint. This book has everything you want in an action thrilled adventure. A sassy team, villains, car chases, political shenanigans and a romance - perfection in a fantastically written tale. Jesse J Thoma is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors.
I was unable to finish this book after discovering it was a part of a series. The characters and plot were interesting from what I read but it was clear to me that I needed to read the first two books to fully appreciate and understand all the particulars this story has to offer. A note to the publisher - please note in the book's description when a book is part of a series and/or if it is a stand-alone novel despite its series status.
I would imagine that if you read the first three books in this series you might find this new book covering the exploits of these skilled women Operatives led by Holt enjoyable. This book stars Lola who goes undercover investigating an LA street gang, a Neuroscientist and what happens when their lives collide. Having never read the other books in this series I found it almost impossible to feel any connection with any of the characters and having absolutely no desire to read the series. For people who like action books you will probably love it.
I wasn't able to review this book because it was a series and I have not read the other books. It would not be fair to give my review not knowing any of the backstory of the characters. What little but I did read before noticing was well written and interesting. I am interested in reading the other books in the series.
Firstly I would recommend that readers read the previous books in this great series. My only negative on this book is it had been a while since I read book one and had somehow missed the other book. It just made it harder but not impossible to follow all the characters and their role in the storyline. Having said that this book is as good as the first and I really liked the development of the relationship between Quinn and Lola. This series is well worth having
While on a secret assignment, Lola finds herself falling for the fascinating Dr. Quinn Golden. But after Lola puts Quinn's life in danger, they both have to leave the city. The need to keep themselves alive is their only goal now. Will their romance survive the danger that plagues their lives?
I didn't realize that this was the 3rd book in a series, and some of the book is told from the POV of other characters introduced in the previous books. I didn't have any trouble following the story, but I think I didn't form the same emotional connection with all the characters because the focus was on so many characters at once, not just the main characters.
I really really liked the beginning, and the way Lola and Quinn got to know each other, it was really sweet and well done. It was a slow burn courtship and I loved it. I also loved both Lola and Quinn. I loved how strong our leading ladies were. Quinn didn't need rescuing, she was accomplished and brilliant in her own right, but Lola could also be there for her. Lola was very strong and badass but she was also sensitive and caring. They were very genuine characters and a really nice pairing. I loved Quinn's secretary too- she was hilarious and a brilliant sidekick.
But in the second half of the book, I struggled. I would probably give the first half of the book four stars and the second half of the book 3 stars. I didn't really like the action scenes in the book, I felt they were a little lacking. There were so many characters involved and I felt like the focus was on so many characters at once, that I found it not as engaging as it could have been. I was also super confused during the walkie talkie, or earpiece, conversations because I was never sure who was actually talking.
I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a book from a action themed series involving a group of bounty hunters. I've read this one without having read the others and some threads have been difficult to follow, especially the ones involving the different couples in the team. But in essence it's not necessary to have read the previous books to completelly get in this one. As for the story I have had some trouble to completelly understand the plot, but this could be my fault, as action themed books are not my favorites. But the book has a well constructed plot, well developed and very well paced, with some absolutely frantic moments. There is an interesting romance, too, and some continuation of others initiated in the previous books. Overall the book is pretty interexting and recomendable.
3.5 Stars. This is the third book in Thoma’s series about Holt Lasher and her crew. I found I like this slightly better than book two, but the first book is still my favorite. I do want to point out I highly recommend reading these books in order. The main group of characters is in all three books and you connect to them over the series. I just don’t think this book would work as well as a standalone.
Holt is basically a real life superhero who owns a bounty hunter business. She is the boss, but has a very competent crew working for her. One of her best workers, mostly know as being part of the “muscle” of the crew, is Lola. When Holt’s family is threatened, it’s up to Lola to find out what is going on. What Lola doesn’t expect is to be attracted to a woman who might just be a suspect.
These books are just pure action books. Of course each of them has a romance theme, but what you get with these books is an action packed ride. Not to be insulting but these are not the best written books, but they are always exciting and fun. And what I also enjoy, Holt does not like guns, so this isn’t just a shoot-um-up kind of book. It adds some imagination since things can’t easily be solved by guns.
What I liked better about this book, than the previous one, was the romance. Considering this is an action book, there was more time for the romance than you would expect. I really liked Lola and Quinn and enjoyed how they got closer and closer together.
The way this book ended it might be the last in the series. If so, this definitely was an enjoyable series. If you are looking for a fun action packed ride, with some romance, give these books a shot. If you are new to the series, definitely start with book 1, The Chase.
The book seems to be written great however I was unable to finish. Not because the plot was boring or because of bad writing but because of the fact that the book seems to be a sequel.
At first I had no idea it was supposed to be a sequel as its not stated anywhere and the summary of the book seems to be of a stand alone story. However, when I started reading the book, I got confused by the mention of all these characters in literally the first 2 or 3 paragraphs of the book, none of which had any prior introduction. As a first time reader that confused the hell outta me so I went on amazon to look up this author and lo and behold she has two other books and after reading their summaries, I see that each book is the main story of the other characters mentioned and also the beginning of this story.
Now, if this book was trying to be a standalone, it failed because anyone who wanted to read it by itself would be as lost as I was by the mention of all these characters and of plot lines that they have no idea about if they didn't read the first book.
If this book is supposed to be a part of the series however where u have to read everything, it also failed because how would first time readers like me know it's a sequel? It's not mentioned in the summary, it's not marked as a series and there's no "book 3" in the title or anything. I had to actively search the writers name and then read the summary of each of her books to see that it was the third book. The regular readers may be good with that but if there were a new reader out there they'd have no idea and it might turn them off.
That's something that needs to be fixed. The author can mark them as a series as they seem to clearly be or write them more like standalones should be written whereas any character being introduced is done with the knowledge that some of the readers may not have read the first book. Or at least make it easier to tell the book is a part of a series by having similar book covers. All three books have wildly different covers, not to mention totally diffrrent titles that had literally nothing to do with each other. and that's why I had to read the summary of each to see if they were part of a sequel.
Once this minute but huge issue is fix, I believe this book will do just fine.
I cannot give a full review of the writing and plot as I am gonna have to read the first two books to even have any idea of what's going on.
The Lashes series as I call it is part action comics and part lesbian romance. This one is no different. Written better than some other serial books out there I enjoyed reconnecting with old characters (even though I had forgotten most of them), and had a delightful hours reading this fast paced action book.
You need to suspend disbelief in some parts of the book but I guess that's half the charm. It's well written and I enjoyed meeting new characters. Easily 4 stars.
3.5 stars
This is the fourth book by Thoma, and the third in a series that includes The Chase, and Pedal to the Metal. It is an action book featuring a team of skilled operatives who become embroiled in the dangerous investigation of a street gang in LA. The team is lead by the Amazonian Holt, and her girlfriend Isabelle. Their main attack dog is Lola, a tall and strong fighter with a basic education and a degree in loyalty and street smarts.
Lola, desperate to prove herself again after a stuffup which resulted in another team member being shot, volunteers to go undercover to investigate the threats against the team. While working on campus in her new role as caretaker, she comes across the dazzling Quinn, a research neuroscientist.
Dr Quinn Golden is working madly to write grants, teach and continue her research when she stumbles across the stunning Lola. The heat between them is palpable, despite them coming from very different worlds.
When it all blows up, will Lola and the team be able to keep Quinn safe?
Thoma has created an interesting team with diverse skills. Giving the leader Holt extreme wealth, the author gives herself freedom to have a largish group and the wherewithal to travel or do what they need to get the bad guys. Thoma has given the members of the group enough differentiation to be interesting in their own right, which is appropriate for the series.
I haven’t read the first two books in the series, and this wasn’t a problem once I got into the book. However, the start was very confusing and I can see why another reviewer didn’t get very far into it. The first scene is an action sequence, which is normally a good way to start an action book. However, it was impossible to tell who all the characters were when we only had their voices during the chase sequence. It would have been much easier for a new reader to meet less of the team during the initial chase, and to meet the most of the team back at headquarters later on.
Once I got to know the team a bit better, it was easier to differentiate the separate characters, their personalities and their roles within the team. I think this was an issue with coming into the series as a newcomer, rather than already knowing the team from previous books.
Lola was smart and capable, and engagingly interested in learning new things. Quinn was a dedicated researcher, who seemed to come out of her shell as she spent more time with Lola. Their budding relationship was forged during a dangerous time, but Thoma created enough heat for it to have a flavour of its own within the chaos.
I liked the action as written by Thoma. However, it did seem odd that the team call themselves bounty hunters when they spent so much of the book not doing any of that, nor even referring to it at all. It would have felt more real to have some staff still working on that in the background while others were focused on the major operation covered in the main plotline.
I can see this being a popular book with fans of lesbian action writing, although I would recommend you read the previous books first.
This is an enjoyable action romp with a lesbian twist.
