Boy Erased by Garrard Conley is a memoir about his experince in a conversion therapy program and his struggle growing up homosexual in a very religious family and town.
This was an interesting read. I've read fiction based on gay conversion therapy and this was the first non-fiction i've read based on it. It was interesting to see Conley's life during the therapy and what he went through. I wished it had been more moving as i found it lacked the emotional factor i expected an wanted. A shame but still covered a much-needed discussion point.
This was beautifully written and had a style unlike other biographies I've read. I do wonder if the author will go on to write fiction in future.
The author is a gay young man in America's bible belt and growing up in a religious family. He signs up for gay therapy to 'cure' himself. I found all this shocking and interesting. It's almost unbelievable that this is going on today. What really struck me is the authors pain at being himself.
My only complaint is that there is a lot unresolved but perhaps the author is still working those things out.
