This was a rollercoaster from start to finish and my heart is still racing now! To be fair poor Zoe has to be the unluckiest person in the world, but the story is so relateable and believable, I spent most of my time in a heightened state of fear!
If I had to find a negative, I think it got a little far fetched toward the end - and I think it would have had more impact if she had got away from Daniel and the last chapters were about her new life away from him (those who have read it will know what I am referring to, but don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t read it yet!) this is safe haven, sleeping with the enemy at its darkest! Excellent!
This book was ok but could have been brilliant. The author had two parts to the story and in my opinion the second part was not needed and could have been another book. In part one, Zoe longs to escape from her abusive and controlling husband, Daniel. This storyline was really interesting and I just thought part two a bit far fetched. However I did enjoy the book.
This book was quite different to how I thought it would be,I imagined it would be a fairly straight forward story, but it was anything but, and I loved it.There was certainly far more to the book than I expected, there was a lot going on , I liked the main character and her friend, I was wondering if her future husband was all he seemed and I felt incensed on her behalf when she was treated badly.I am going to shut up now and not give anything away,I most definitely do not want to spoil this for other readers, all I can say is there were twists and turns that I wasn't expecting, and I had no idea how it was going to pan out.. I couldn't read it fast enough and stayed up way too late to finish it.Really good, atmospheric and creepy at times and well paced, can't fault it.Thanks to the Publishers and Netgalley for an ARC.
I absolutely devoured this book in an afternoon, it's gripping, emotional and thrilling. Perfect speed, great ending. Overall incredible book
Zoe meets a man who seemed wonderful but then things quickly deteriorates can she escape this marriage ? This book kept me reading but for me did not keep me fully invested. It was a good read but I did not really connect with the book
A girl living in a small town aspires to be a New York Times bestselling author. Until then she works in a restaurant to make ends meet with her friend and roommate Lizzy. Life is good. It’s even better when handsome, charming Daniel walks into her life. He is everything she could possibly ask for in a partner. Caring, supportive, stable, loving. Zoe had a rough start but now life has delivered to her a future tied with bow. And despite Lizzy’s concerns, she throws herself into the relationship. Because Daniel is all that matters. He is “The One.”
A young woman sits in her kitchen, listening to the sound of her husband’s footfalls upstairs, awaiting his departure for work. It is their third anniversary and she celebrates with the meagre portion of food he restricts her to and thoughts of her punishment should she ignore orders. Married life is not what she expected it to be. From the moment of the honeymoon, it has entailed fear, anguish, hunger and punishment. It is three years since she met him in that restaurant and for three years she has suffered his abuse. But now Zoe is pregnant and she will do anything to keep her child safe from Daniel.
Something I loved about Kiss Me, Kill Me is how J. S. Carol familiarises you with the characters, settles you into the story, then pulls the rug out from under your feet. I was sure I had the ending figured out, then all off a sudden, everything shifts and I’m left wondering where the afternoon went. I really felt for Zoe in this book. She rushed into a relationship with this man, blindsided by his intelligence and charm, completely dubious to his manipulation and cunning tricks. And when she tries to run away, he tracks her down like a predictor on the hunt for its prey and forces her to return home with him. For three years she was stuck in a marriage and when the possibility of escape arrives, it is almost as frightening and dangerous as staying. Not only is this a gripping read, it is also a very emotional one!
J. S. Carol’s characterisation is fantastic, his writing wonderful. I really, really enjoyed Kiss Me, Kill Me. As soon as I read the first sentence, I was hooked. This is a fantastic new addition to the genre, a slice of perfection that will have psychological thriller fans in it grips for hours!
Thrilling. Shocking. Fabulous
A good read, I liked it a lot but I did not love it. I felt the story was a bit lacking at times but still interesting
Loved this. Have read most of James Carol's other books but this was completely different. Definitely a book of two halves and this disappointed me at first as I was enjoying the first part of the story so much, but the story developed differently but equally well. Great stuff.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I will be looking out for more. This was a behind closed doors story with many many twists!!
From the outside Zoe and Daniel looked like the perfect couple in their beautiful house and expensive cars.. but don't believe everything you see. Daniel is controlling, to the point where Zoe can't even choose her own clothes or food. To be honest for a while there Zoe really did annoy me for putting up with it but as I got further in I felt sorry for her. The last part of this book was so intense but not wanting to spoil it for anybody.
Thanks to Bonnier Zaffre and NetGalley for a copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest opinions. I realis d only today that it came out in February but the NetGalley date shows May.. sorry my review is late
I thought this is going to be another book about a wife trapped in a marriage with a controlling husband. It made me a bit depressed but I kept on reading as I began to read more, I got sucked into the story. I devoured this book in a few days and it is not a short book.
We have Zoe who on paper, she has a perfect life, married to a successful, handsome husband Daniel, they live in a big house, and they own nice cars. Behind the scenes, Daniel is a scumbag. I wanted to slap him with this book. He controls what she eats and what time she eats, what she dresses, and what kind of underwear she wears (yep) he doesn't let her read books (I would have killed him right there) and he doesn't give her any money.
The story shifts from the present day where Zoe finds out she's pregnant and needs to escape her cruel husband to save herself and her baby. Understandable right? Zoe is desperate for a way out. We get the glimpse of the past of how Zoe met Daniel, the signs were there but she ignored them.
By the middle of the book, the whole scenery changes to Daniel point of view, which was interesting. I liked Zoe and Lizzy characters. Daniel was terrible and Gabriel was even worse.
The ending left me a bit wondering what it might happen, Zoe and her baby. Overall this is well plotted and well-written book.
I would like the publishers and Net Gallery for supplying me a free copy in exchange for a review.
I have read a few of J.S.Carol's books so I wasn't disappointed by this story.
Zoe is stuck in a controlling, mentally & physically abusive marriage with Dan. He is charming when they first meet but once married he shows his true colours.
As the story unfolds Zoe finds herself trying to escape from Dan and then Gabriel.
Kiss Me, Kill Me by J. S. Carol was a psychological thriller that had me hooked from the first page. Zoe and her husband Dan are in a relationship where he controls her every move and punishes her if she does not stick to his rules at all times. Zoe was a great character and I was in her corner all the way. I really enjoyed this book. I would like to thank NetGalley and Bonnier Zaffre for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
A gripping read from start to finish. This is certainly a heart pounding read. Only after Zoe and Dan are married Zoe realises Dan is not all he seems. She soon discovers this charming, caring and ideal man turns to something else, a controlling, possessive and cruel monster. How is Zoe going to cope with this existence? This makes for some compelling and nerve wracking reading as I had no idea how this story was going to end. I honestly can't say too much about this plot for fear of a spoiler, but it is a brilliant read.
I have thoroughly enjoyed previous books by this author, yet this is the first psychological thriller I have read by JS Carol. I sincerely hope there is more to come
Another book within the psychological thriller genre... I was hoping that this book would avoid turning into one of the many predictable books of this genre which seems to have grown in the last 18 months. Predictable it wasn't!! :)
Zoe is leading a somewhat care free life living with a friend when she meets a tall, dark and handsome young man who is successful at work and has bucket loads of charisma! They fall head over heels in love and soon marry; however, Dan is not the man she thought he was and soon his true colours shine through.
This is another book where I didn't really like any of the main characters but even so I became invested in Zoe's story. All of the characters involved tend to have many issues which they are battling but this adds to the tension and complexity of the characters. I was expecting a run of the mill psychological thriller but J.S. Carol created a rollercoaster, which twists and turns just when you think that you have it all figured out! 'I never saw that coming' definitely went through my mind on more than one occasion!
I would recommend reading Kiss Me, Kill Me even if you think that you have had your fill of domestic abuse psychological thrillers. This is a well paced, engaging and tense thriller with a good twist in the plot which most will note see coming!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bonnier Joffe and J.S Carol for my ARC of Skin Deep
This gripping tale about Zoe, who only wants to be loved, is both intriguing and heartbreaking.
We follow her on a troublesome journey through adolescence to adulthood, with plenty of twists and turns on the way.
I highly recommend this book, you will find it difficult to put down!!!
To the outside world Zoe has the perfect life but it's all a lie. Her husband is a controlling man and she wants out but so dies he. His plans are far more sinister but just who will survive.
This was so good. The twists are brilliant and many of them caught me by surprise. I liked how the story switches perspective from Zoe to her husband then back again. It adds more depth to the story. The ending is very clever too. I love an ending like that.
Zoe is an interesting character with a lot of strength. At times you want to tell her to stop that's a silly idea and then others your right behind her. Always a good sign when I'm that invested in a character. This is a story of very few characters but each is important and it works.
An all round great read with some good twists..
Zoe is trapped in a controlling marriage. Daniel is definitely not the person she married. He has become controlling beyond the point of reason and she needs to get away. The twists in this story are good. I was not totally convinced by the story. There needed to be more depth to the characters. There was not enough reason given as to why Daniel behaved so badly towards Zoe. Overall the story is a good read.
Excellent book with a brilliant storyline and great main characters. I would recommend this book.
Fast paced page turner. Kept me reading up until all hours. One of the better psychological fiction books I've read in quite a while.
I've just finished Kiss Me Kill Me and thought it was fantastic. Truly chilling and brilliant writing with short chapters that make you want to read 'just one more'.
With a tense and gripping story line, it kept me page turning and there was plenty of twists and turns along the way.
I also loved The Killing Game by the same author so I will definitely be reading more of his books.
Thank you!
