"When Emily meets Adam she knows he is the One. That together they can deal with anything that is thrown at them. But lurking in the shadows is another woman, Pammie. Emily chose Adam, but she didn’t choose his mother. There’s nothing a mother wouldn’t do for her son, and now Emily is about to find out just how far Pammie will go to get what she wants "
This was a great book for someone who loves a gentle domestic drama thriller with some fascinating characters.
I was not sure who was playing who, and whose version of events to believe and it was an intriguing read to try to work out what was actually going on between Emily and her potetial mother-in-law Pammie and the brothers Adam and James.
My only criticism is that the ending left me with a few questions because it did not tie up all the loose ends for me.
The Other Woman has all the potential to be a great thriller. However, I really struggled to connect with Emily and found her to be really frustrating as a protagonist. It’s hard to be sucked into a narration when you struggle to care about any of the characters and the outcome.
This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended
A highly entertaining read with great characters and an interesting plot. I couldn't put the book down as it was so gripping.
Not your average mother-in-law / daughter-in-law relationship…. Nor a normal mother/son one either!!!
You think you have the measure of Pammy but is she what you really think she is?
Well written and a good read
Yes! 5*
This is a domestic thriller with hobnailed boots on that will continue to kick you in the butt, then the ending will just leave you rocking on your knees.
One of the best thrillers I’ve read that has love to hate characters in it, hate to love characters in it!
It’s so remarkably crafted that it’s a kick in the guts at the end.
This came out a while ago, so, if you love thrillers like this, you need it in your life for sure.
This was a thriller with the most unexpected twist.A total page turner, it describes the characters so vividly that you cannot help but have visceral reaction to them. The heroine is finally on top of her game professionally, when she meets the love of her life. As often in late 20s and early 30s relationships, things progress quickly, and soon she meets her lover's mother. From the very first moment of encounter games are being played.
Overall, I really enjoyed this page turner and kept yelling at the book until i finished it. The ending was absolutely worth it.
Great read, a real page turner which kept me hooked. Read within a day which says it all, highly recommend
Unfortunately I read this book a while ago and seem to have missed it when writing reviews. - sadly I cant remember enough detail to give a full review.
However, thanks to NetGalley for the ARC :-)
I must admit I started this book a while ago and gave up around 20% in because the opening wasn’t what I was expecting and didn’t engage me. However, having come back to it I realise that I stopped reading at just the wrong point because when Pammie comes on the scene everything changes and it becomes a very entertaining read. She is such a superb creation - a real love-to-hate character, almost a pantomime villain but one who turns out to have much more depth and win the reader’s sympathy as the story progresses. Although I thought Emily should have run a mile after the first or second encounter with her prospective mother in law and couldn’t see why on earth she was attracted to Adam, I loved the dynamic between the characters and once the story got going I was immersed in their world, wanting to find out what would happen
I did enjoy this book, it's a light, entertaining and gripping read, but a few weeks later I had to remind myself of its subject as I'd forgotten it already. Well-written and a great way to pass a few hours.
I have mixed feelings about this book.
I was really enjoying it and found it to be a great read.
Then we came to the end. The ending all seemed a bit too fast paced and as though it wasn't really wrapped up properly.
I feel if it had been wrapped up a bit better and that there were a few more chapters added to clean things up then this would have been a five star read.
Sorry!!
There's nothing original about this plot. It's been done before many times, in novels, in TV dramas: girl finds Mr Perfect, but mum-in-law-to-be is a possessive, evil bitch, who will go to jaw-dropping lengths to ensure her Supernova son will never belong to anyone else. It's a tried and tested format, and Jones tackles it competently in this, her debut novel. However, committed though I was, eager to find out how Emily would detach Adam from his mother's, Pammie's, vice-like grip, I found the ending was a little far-fetched and a bit of a let-down. The methods Pammie employs are totally disproportionate to the reasons for them.
Pammie's manipulation is very clever and strategic, making it very hard for Emily to convince others. I couldn't help thinking, though, 'Emily, you have a twenty-first-century phone, record your vitriolic conversations between you and Pammie.' That would have put the kibosh on all Pammie's plotting. But then, I guess, the story would have run out of steam.
I won't give the editor any stars, either: apostrophes to pluralise words is an editorial sin, an 'I was sat' (aarrgghh!), one too many instances of 'there's' which should have been there are, along with...'for asking Kate and I'. For I??? Naughty, naughty.
Despite all the negatives, the rather stereotypical characters and the misnomer of a 'thriller', it's quite well written, and strangely, rather addictive.
The plot follows Emily when she falls madly in love with Adam. She thinks the world of him and wants nothing more than the perfect future with him. However there is another woman on the scene and nothing seems to be able to break the bond they share.
I think I enjoyed this book more having listened to it on audio as the tension builds up perfectly. There are a few twists and a couple of WTF moments that really make you want to keep reading and I even found myself laying on my bed in the middle of the day wanting to bite my nails as I reached the end.
What I liked
* I was so gripped by this story that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
* This novel got my emotions pumping. I felt so sorry for Emily, I absolutely couldn't stand Pammie and thought she was nothing but a nasty, manipulative witch and I wanted to grab Adam by the shoulders and shake him until his teeth rattled in his skull. I love novels that make me feel so many emotions and so strongly.
* Pammie is the mother in law from hell, and so if you think you battle with your mother in law then I suggest you rush out and buy this book because Pammie will make even the most difficult relative look like a saint in comparison.
* A quick and easy read that had me diving for the book whenever I had a spare moment.
* An unexpected ending with a wonderful twist, meaning that fans of tense, gripping, psychological suspense will love this one.
* It was thoroughly entertaining and I absolutely loved it.
What I didn't like
* There was some pretty over the top and slightly unbelievable behaviour from some of the characters. I would have acted completely differently in many of the situations and so I did find some of the characters actions a little strange.
* A few lose ends that weren't dealt with by the end of the novel, and which have left me with some questions that I'd love the answers to.
Final thoughts
* I truly loved this novel and it's been some time since I've been so completely entertained. This is one that I have no problem recommending to others.
You know a book is good when you finish it in a few hours....when you're at work! This book is dramatic, compelling, surprising and, oddly for a domestic thriller, really quite funny in places. Sandie Jones has done a fantastic job in building a believable relationship between the main characters Emily and Adam. It reflects wonderfully that first flush of love/lust so when the SHTF we understand why Emily wants to hold on to her relationship despite Adam apparently having his head stuck firmly in his own rear end. In Pammie, Adams mother, we have the mother of all mother in laws from hell. She's a nightmare from the start and seems bent on splitting them up with no apparent motive other than jealousy. As the book develops though Emily realises that there's more than just spite involved as the truth about her new family is exposed.
A fantastic debut, looking forward to more from this writer.
I didn't at first like the book. I couldn't handle the way Emily's future mother in law treated her, and how her useless boyfriend, fiance, then husband just let it happen. I honestly wanted to get into the book's pages and give the woman a slap.
And then it all came together. (no spoilers I promised). I didn't see that one coming, and enjoyed the book immensely afterwards. Highly recommended.
What a great read!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'll be sure to pick up more by this author! 5*'s
This is a fantastic debut novel, and I will be eagerly awaiting the next one! The mother in law from hell desperately trying to get her way in scary as anything, in this well written and fun thriller!
When Emily meets Adam she knows she's finally found the man she's destined to be with. But the dream man comes with a nightmare mother-in-law, Pammie. Overbearing and spiteful, she's seemingly hell-bent on splitting up Emily and Adam and will stop at nothing to get Emily out of her son's life. Full of twists and compelling, 'The Other Woman' keeps readers guessing to the end.
