I just love it when a book messes with my head!
Determined to scupper the relationship between her precious son Adam and his girlfriend Emily, Pammy has got to be the most manipulative, devious loathsome character ever. A tale of manipulation, control and domestic violence .. but just who is doing the controlling?
An excellent debut and a solid 4 star read.
Thanks to Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for the opportunity to read - this review is, as always, my honest opinion and thoughts about the book.
Emily meets Adam and it's love at first sight. They are soon moving forward until it comes time to meet his mother, she is not happy. In fact Pammie sets out to undermine and derail Emily at any cost. She truly is the mother in law from he'll.
Wow I could not put this book down, you just need to read more to find out what happens next. I wasn't sure at the start as this is a well used idea but it drew me in. I just had to know how far she would go. The twist at the end was very clever though I figured out some of it. I really liked it though. It was a really good read and read within a day because I just had to know more.
There are some triggers in this that may affect readers in particular the cancer story which did get to me a little but I still really rate the book. A Brilliant thriller
**4.5 stars**
My goodness, this was such an addictive book.
I think the book works best when you just know the basics and the publication synopsis does this well.
All I’m going to say is l love a book full of psychological mind games and in this book, the prospective Mother in Law Pammie, plays them to a tee. I’m not sure I agreed with the motive, as I think things could have been done so differently but then, where would the story be in that!
Raced through this one and it kept me guessing right to the very end.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for an ARC to read.
Emily meets the man of her dreams in a bar. Her romance is very serious very quickly. Everything would be fantastic if it were not Adam's mother. Already from the first encounter Emily feels that Pammie does not like her. With all the tricks she tries to torpedo the relationship.
The summary sounds irresistible. Who is better suited as a villain than a mother in law who maliciously tries to alienate her son from his girlfriend. Unfortunately, I have no patience for whiny and submissive women. And Emily is such a person. Very quickly red flags appear everywhere and show very clearly that with the whole family, including Adam himself, something is wrong. But Emily thinks she is very smart and tough and thinks she can handle it. Unfortunately, she is in no way. She is naive and completely fixated on marrying this great man by her side.
There was a point in the book where I seriously considered stop reading. Emily became humble and obedient to me at some point. But instead I just flew over a few pages and read on. The book is written in a simple and fluent way so that it just flows by. In addition, Emily luckily came to a point where she then had too much of the whole messed-up family. My hopes got up. Unfortunately only for a short time.
Finally, I did not foresee the twist during my speed reading. But it was also so awkward and unlikely that I would have never imagined it. There could have been another possibility for this whole crude story. The twist was pretty much unbelievable.
Emily is really no example of emancipation and female strength. She is one of those characters for whom all the other characters in the book feel just worship, but as a reader I just think how fragile and whiny she is. Once again a very weak protagonist spoiled a book for me.
LOVED this book
A great read and could not put it down
It pulls you in
It grips you
then WHAM
the twist you do not see coming blows you away
BRILLIANT
Thank you netgalley, Pan MacMillan and Sandie Jones for allowing me to read and review this book.
Loved this 'mother in law from hell' story. Drew me right in and kept me there all through. Really good depiction of mother and daughter relationship, which is unusual. Killer twist you won't see coming. Perfect beach read.
Such a good story of misconceptions and miscommunication and families. Loved the twist at the end. This was a great read.
Emily thinks Adam is perfect; the man she thought she would never meet. But lurking in the shadows is a rival; a woman sho shares a deep bond with the man she loves.
They say love is blind and there has never been a truer saying to describe what's happening in this book. When Emily meets the other love in Adams life, his mother Pammie, she is not met with the most pleasant person. Pammie does everything she can to break them up. Even saying she has a terminal illness so that her son would cancel the wedding.
I know there must be women all over the world who have mother-in-laws from hell and Pammie fits easily into this category. The pace is medium set, a fast pace would not do this book any justice. The characters are all believable but I can't say much more than this as I would contain too many spoilers. There is a twist near the end that I did not see coming.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Pan McMillan and the author Sandie Jones for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
An incredible debut novel. A young couple newly in love and a mother from hell. This writing is so clever that you feel the same trauma as Emily does as Pammie cleverly mentally abuses her while coming across as a dear thing to others. I felt complete frustration with Adam and even Emily during this gripping saga. The story gets darker as you go deeper and whoah that ending!
Couldn't put this down! A really gripping and addictive page turner with a surprise twist I did NOT see coming!
OMG Pammie is the mother in law from hell! When her son Adam meets Emily, Pammie is not ready to let him go. So she does her best to make life hell for poor Emily. Now I know mothers can be overprotective of their sons but Pammie takes it to a new level! I was shouting at Emily get out now, it is never going to work!
When you are wondering what new levels she will stoop to, it gets even worse and there are shocks you won't see coming. Towards the end the surprises come thick and fast and I was literally gobsmacked! Brilliant read, I would thoroughly recommend this book.
I could not put this book down I just kept wanting to read chapter after chapter to see what was going to happen is pammie all she seems to be is emily just going out of her mind his her partner who she thinks he is
At first I didn't like the writing style, it felt a little like the author had swallowed a thesaurus. But after a while I got into the story and was able to forget about that. I've read a few books on a similar theme recently, with the tyrant mother in law, but I enjoyed the twist at the end. Would read others by the author.
I was drawn to the plot line of The Other Woman, and from the first few pages, knew this was going to be a great book.
Emily meets Adam and thinks he’s perfect. But there’s another woman in his life. Someone Emily just can’t compete with.
This book is tense, gripping and a fabulous psychological thriller that will have you turning the pages until the end.
This is the first book I’ve read by Sandie Jones and I look forward to reading more.
Thank you to NetGalley, Pan Macmillan and the author for the chance to review.
I've read some of the reviews for this and they seem to be glowing. However I did not enjoy it at all. I gave up on it once but gave it another go, wish I hadn't bothered. The story line was injected with unnecessary observations and I didn't find any of the characters believable or interesting. I was tense and itchy all the way through as I felt the main character was so weak, the twist at the end did nothing to alleviate that.
An absolute page turner. Full of twists and turns. A really enjoyable read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
Too many of us can empathise with the mother-in-law from hell premise of a story, which is probably why I identified so well with this novel. I was instantly wrapped up in Emily's budding romance with her seemingly perfect man, until she is taken to meet his mother.
This is a classic tale which highlights that not everything is as it initially appears. I was constantly wondering how this story was going to play out as it seemed it could only end in one way. I was so wrong and the ending is fabulous.
I am so looking forward to reading more from this brilliant new writer.
I could not put this book down! Absolute page turner - easily 5 stars from me.
Emily meets Adam and falls had over heels in love with him. And then she meet Pammie - Adam's mother. This is when her life starts to spin out of control.
A great story with a twist that you will not see coming. Thanks Pan MacMillan and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book to read and enjoy in exchange for my honest views.
Good enjoyable read. I enjoyed the different characters and their relationship dynamics that played out through the book and how these changed. There were some parts that felt a bit rushed, but overall I renjoyed reading this book, but the ending left me a just a bit disappointed.
A very resisted DNF. I really tried to finish this book but couldn't. Really didn't like it.
There is no problem with structure. The plot is also OK. I read a lot of thrillers and seen worse plots. But the style of writing, and all dialogue is so cliche and so 90's. My first annoyance started at the beginning, in the bar scene. Then the female protagonist, telling her friend something like 'IT is this new industry I don't know about'. Wow. We are in year 2018 not 1988- How could she be a recruiter and have NO idea an IT analyst does? Also her friends, one crazy(the fun type crazy, not the one you find vomiting on the coach ) but supportive house mate female, other being the most cliche gay man in literary history (asking the right questions, giving perfect advice, makes you think that he doesn't have a life on his own) made my alarm bell ring. But I still went on.
But the dialogue between Emily and Adam. It felt so fabricated. Also Emily acts like an idiot.
I couldn't stand to read a book about Emily, dedicated to bag Adam, happy to shut up and take things as he pleases. The world is full of Emily's with low self esteem, it just hurts to read about them running after a man as it's life or death, as if this is normal! Sorry.
