Emily meets and falls for Adam but hasn’t reckoned on his mum Pammie, who seems hell-bent on splitting them up any way she can.
The Other Woman is an enjoyable read which did keep my attention throughout. As “monster-in-law” Pammie’s behaviour becomes ever more extreme, you have to keep reading to see just how far she is prepared to go.
A considerable suspension of disbelief is required as regards the behaviour of all the main characters, and the twist at the end, while well executed, did, I feel, leave some significant unanswered questions. Unfortunately I can’t expand on them without revealing major spoilers!
I found Emily a frustrating character at times as she can seem almost deliberately obtuse and certainly doesn’t help herself most of the time. For all her frequent protestations about how much she loves Adam, she never really seems to, and to be honest it’s hard to see why she would, because even from the start he never seems that great.
All in all I did enjoy reading this. The idea is good and it’s generally well done but could have done with tightening up in places.
Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
This is a real twisty thriller. The strange thing is, despite all the makings of a great thriller, there was something about this book that fell a little bit short. Perhaps it comes from the fact that are SO MANY CHANGES. So many twists to the point where you begin to question what the book is even trying to achieve. It plays very heavily on the 'woman going mad' trope and ensures that the reader is left in as much of the dark as half of the characters. I think it eventually feels like a soap opera because so much is happening. This book is not brilliantly paced, with so much stuff happening in the last fifty pages that it seems almost like the rest of the novel was a waste. It was just okay, I guess. Not something I'd want to revisit.
The prologue alone got me hooked. A few short chapters were all it took to intrigue me. I ended up reading this within a few hours.
The writing is so captivating I just couldn't put it down. I needed to know what happens. I needed to know the full story.
The whole story I didn't see the ending coming. I was so focused on the women. I saw some red flags but just like Emily I didn't piece them altogether until it was too late.
The characters were incredibly written. Throughout the story I wondered what I was missing. Something felt off, now I know I was focusing on the wrong person just like Emily.
The fact this is a debut gets me more excited for future releases.
‘The Other Woman’ by Sandie Jones published by Pan Macmillan and out May 31st
Take a woman, Emily,...who falls for a man, Adam....its perfect....but there is this ‘other woman’.....his Mother...then add a mix of psychological thriller, chick lit, 50 Shades and you have a glimmer of what this book is about!
It steams ahead, making you turn every page as characters are added and the story becomes even more addictive
I laughed our loud, shuddered and shouted NOOOOOO you evil witch 😃😃 and every emotion its possible to have when your reading a book appears
It really is a great read, and just as you think you have it all worked out and the scheming Mum in law is facing, at last, the consequences of her ways wooooooshhhhhh.....well....you will have to read it to find out yourself.....
Guaranteed a great book for holidays, flights or nights in, wherever you read this book you will hooked lined up and sinkered
I LOVED IT
10/10 5 stars
This was an ok read, not great just ok. I didn’t really warm to the characters at all and at times felt Emily was ridiculous.
There was a twist at the end, I didn’t see it coming so all was not bad (or should I say mediocre)
SOooooo Emily meets Adam, then meets Pammie (his mother) and so it begins!!!....what a story I loved the twist at the end and I totally didn’t see it coming, found myself screaming at Emily to just get out now, run, and don’t turn back lol...the signs are everywhere but shes just blind to them.
Full of great characters and twists and turns this is a great thriller that has you hooked from the start and keeps you hanging all the way through. A great book for 2018 and one you do not wanna kids!!!!
Oh, this is a booty.
Not my usual genre but the blurb fascinated me (especially as I've only just married my husband).
The easy reading plot and really well thought out characters ('Every woman needs a Seb') made this absolutely riveting reading.
What an awful person'the other woman' is! She was so horrible I almost admired her.
I was expecting a twist and thought I'd suss it and then be disappointed (I must stop trying!) but I honestly didn't see that one coming.
Many, many thanks to #Netgalley for the opportunity and the author for the experience. I'll be recommending this one, definitely.
So much of this book resonated with me and my relationship with the mother of a chap I was going out with years ago. Like the bit where she turned the conversation to something I couldn't possibly include myself in and I'd have to sit there, as her guest, in her house, saying nothing - like a spare part... but I digress. I'm merely trying to get across how certain parts of this book felt so real to the extent that they occasionally made for quite uncomfortable reading. Not that I'm complaining mind, it meant that I was able to emotionally invest in the character of Emily all the more easily. And oh how I felt for her throughout this book. All she wants is Adam, the love of her life; her soul mate. But, along with Adam comes Pammie, his mother. His overbearing, manipulative, apron strings still firmly attached, mother. Well, that's how she comes across to Emily. Adam however can't see that side of her at all and is convinced that it is all in Emily's head. In his eyes, Pammie can do no wrong. But as the story goes on Pammie's behaviour becomes more and more extreme and Emily starts to make some strange discoveries. What exactly is the bond that ties mother and son together?
This book had me rapt throughout. Yes, Ok, as I was reading, there were a few clues to what was really going on but, like certain characters, I was a little blinkered to their true meaning until suddenly, bam! I was faced with the truth towards the end. And what a truth that turned out to be. No spoilers here, don't worry! Suffice to say that I really didn't see the half of what was coming. I had suspicions, well... I've read enough of this sort of book to see certain signs and question certain things but even I wasn't quite prepared for the whole of it as it came out.
Characterisation was excellent. It's hard to describe here without spoilers but the way that the author presented her characters was so well done as to keep me guessing pretty much all the way. All the deliciously wrapped up secrets, lies, assumptions and manipulations were so well executed that I wish I could give examples to show how cleverly it was all done. Can't though; spoilers, sorry.
Pacing was perfect too, and the book was also balanced and contained no superfluous padding. Yes I had to swallow some of the things that Emily put up with but she truly believed in Adam and, as they say, love is blind and conquers all so I guess she thought their love really was perfect and strong enough to ultimately survive whatever was thrown at it. After all, no one wants to either be a quitter or a loser do they?
All in all, a great read which held my attention throughout and left me wholly satisfied at the end. I've also since discovered it to be a debut book, making it all the more impressive for me. I'm very much eager to see what the author does in her next book. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
This book kept me page turning from start to finish. There were interesting characters and believable relationships ,and some characters I liked and some I certainly didn't. I really didn't know what was going on ,I suspected it wasn't straight forward, but really didn't know how it was going to turn out, and very much enjoyed reading this book. Thanks to the Publishers and Netgalley for an ARC.
A very well written story which had me hooked from the beginning. A perfect boyfriend but a nightmare future mother-in-law - what is a girl to do? Add in a complicated relationship with your boyfriend's brother and you have the perfect setting for a great psychological thriller which has plenty of twists and turns right up until the end. A great read.
Well I don't really know where to start, what a great read, I'm feeling a bit wrung out, a great story with some great characters, some I liked, some I really didn't like, I didn't see the twist at the end coming at all, loved it
The perfect boyfriend, the mother-in-law from your nightmares. This novel plays with the old trope and is a fantastically enjoyable page-turner. Brilliant characters - especially the wonderfully over-the-top Pammy - lively, witty prose and a roller coaster of a plot. I devoured it in no time.
Thank you to Pan Macmillan and Net Galley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this book was more of a family drama than a psychological thriller, but nonetheless it was gripping and had a great twist at the end.
The first few pages where the scene was being set felt a bit slow, and I wondered whether this was going to be my sort of book. Once set though, this book was gripping right up to the very last page.
The characters were well defined and I felt they really came alive. I was able to picture them and the events unfurling in my head, which I find is an extra special quality within a book. Pammie the future mother in law was as obnoxious as the synopsis suggests, but I didn't really warm to Emily and even less Adam, as much as I wanted to, so it was a little hard to feel any empathy with their predicaments..
The ending had a great twist, which kept the reader waiting until the last few pages to unravel and reveal all.
Thank you Pan Macmillan for copy of this book. The other woman is a debut novel by Sandie Jones.
Emily is a top Recruitment Consultant, currently on a work conference when they take a break. She is queuing up at a bar waiting to be served when, she meets Adam who jumps the queue and buys a drink. When it gets to her turn, there is a drink already waiting for her from him. They start dating and they fall in love. Everything is going well until Emily meets Adam’s mother Pammie, the mother in law from hell. At first Pammie was all sweetness and light but, after getting to know Emily Pammie wants rid of Emily by threatening her.
I liked the idea of this story but for me I found the main character irritating. So much that in parts I wanted to stop but, I struggled through it. Why would she put up with Adam saying the things he did and also the spiteful things that his mother said. I wouldn’t have put up with it. You can never go between a boyfriend and his family, especially his mother. It never ends well. This is classed as a psychological thriller but I think it’s more a chick flick. 3 stars from me.
I loved this debut book. It's totally gripping and you start reading it thinking you know which way the story's going but then the rug is pulled from under you and WOAH! I wasn't expecting that! Great characters in Emily, Adam and Pammie or should that be Pamela!
Recommended read and can't wait for the next one.
I was given a NetGalley ARC in exchange for an honest and independent review.
I really enjoyed reading this book. For me the appeal was the strength of the characters and the simplicity of the story. It all felt so very real, despite being quite twisted. I did not know whether to feel sympathy for Emily or frustration with her.
Without giving away any spoilers, all I can say is that this story did not turn out as I expected.
4.5****
I know a review ought to be constructive etc but l just want to say quite simply l loved this book; great characters to love and hate and those who annoyed me - sorry Emily - the ending felt a little rushed but nonetheless a really enjoyable read
Totally gripping from the very beginning and not a bit like I had expected from the title. And what an ending !!!!! I loved this book and can't wait for the next one from this author
Oh Pammie, the mother in law from hell, I wanted to slap her then shake [her daughter in law] Emily for not standing up to her and don’t even get me started on Adam the man in between them both. So this was basically my attitude when I started reading The Other Woman. Howeverrrr, just as we readers know not to judge our books by their covers so this little gem was not quite as straightforward as it first appeared. A good story with relatable characters, I highly recommend you read it yourself and find out exactly what makes them tick!
Wow this is a really addictive read that you just can’t put down. I absolutely loved it.
Emily meets Adam on a night out and they just click. All is going well with the relationship until Emily meets Pammie, the future mother-in-law.
This book kept me gripped right from the first page. I absolutely loved it and just needed to find out what was going to happen in the end. I have to admit the ending was not expected at all !!
If you love psychological thrillers you will absolutely love this. I am really looking forward to reading more from this author in the future, as this is a debut novel I can’t wait to read more !!
