Two wonderful stories based on native americans characacters and legends. In the first one, Conquistador's Horse, the author imagine how Tall Bull, a young Cheyenne boy, find a Conquistador's horse, and how that same boy, now a warrior get not one horse but a full pack of horses for his tribe.
The second story, The birth of the wolf clan, is a legend about the unification of the tribes of the Iroquois. This one is a bonus story, full of evil spirits, shapeshifters and where the magic is intertwined with the reality.
Both stories are very enjoyable and hard to put down. As the author says, this is a book dedicated to all horse lovers.
I selected The Conquistador's Horse for gorgeous cover and the promise of a horse-centric story. Regretfully, I found the writing dated and too MG for my taste. The tone came off as ponderous and the language repetitive, as if the reader couldn’t keep the speakers clear within a single graf.
This story could have been an engaging slice of American history had the author not talked down to his intended audience.
Thank you, NetGalley for the opportunity to give this book a chance!
