Having followed (and thoroughly enjoyed) the DCI Bennett series since it began, I was eagerly awaiting Book 6, and it didn’t disappoint. The author has a talent for creating intricate plots, credible characters, and twisted psychopaths! Above all, he has brought to life a compelling new detective, and in Crossed Out we learn more about Bennett’s background. I love the way each book in the series reveals a little more about him. This book, as usual, was well written and well researched. I would highly recommend this book, but would advise reading the series in order.
This is the first book I've read in the series, so I was a newbie to the characters and their relationships. In the afterword, the author mentions how vital it is to keep them evolving and it shows. Even knowing nothing about them, I could immediately see their strengths and weaknesses. There is a new character, April, who really stole my heart with her eagerness to help and great insights. Like me, she was just getting to know the dynamics of the team. Regarding the case, it was interesting and easy to follow, with the appropriate number of red herrings. The one thing I didn't like was the outcome of the investigation. I wish it would have turned out differently, but I guess that's the way it is with real cops. I won't say any more because I don't want to spoil anything. This is an entertaining novel and can be read as a stand-alone.
