I’m on a roll this month. Another great read I’ve enjoyed.
What if you had suffered a breakdown? That’s bad enough….right?
She’s recovering and returns to her husband and child to restart her life.
However, odd and very strange things start to happen around her, is this her mental health causing this? Has she not fully recovered? Can she trust herself?
Or
Can she trust the people around her.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest opinion.
I had a hard time getting into this book. It was a slow read with an obvious ending. Not a bad storyline, but for some reason, I did not care for this book.
Everything She Lost is the story of Nina trying to come back from a breakdown and be the mother and wife that she wants to be. There are many bumps in the road for her as others take advantage of her past and present. The situation is likely all too familiar for some in similar situations. This was a good read with some twists and turns as Nina tries to navigate reality.
Awesome story filled with suspense. Nina and Deja are friends with very complicated lives. Nina had a mental breakdown and almost lost her family and Deja is a single mother who struggles to pay her bills. Things begin to happen that makes Nina wonder if she’s relapsing. This was a very good read.
A great psychological thriller from the start till the end. Really enjoyed it.
This book was ok. It seemed like just a typical "she's crazy" sort of thriller until the last few chapters. It was just ok. I wish it'd been a little more interesting and that I would've felt a better connection with the characters. I just never felt that it was a GOOD book.
Grip[ping from the first page, it was difficult to put this book down. Suspenseful and satisfying, the novel never run out of steam (as so many of this genre do). A must read.
This book tackles mental illness really well. Nina has a lot to cope with and her life is made more difficult when she has bother remembering details and believes that someone is trying to confuse her, so that she has another breakdown. This part of the story was really well put together. What happens with Deja is not totally believable and that is why I have given this book 3 stars.
This review was done professionally for Library Journal and will be published in April.
This is a beautifully written book about the power of relationships between family, friends, and partners for both good and bad. It's also a psychological thriller that leaves you wondering through most of the book what's real and what isn't. Tension-filled story full of intrigue and suspense. Left me wondering is she crazy or am I...?
I love it. Thanks NetGalley!!
I enjoyed reading Everything She Lost. In the first part of the book I waffled between whether I felt sympathy for the characters or not. Nina, I felt very protective over since I too struggle with mental illness. Deja lost any sympathy I had for her after she proved that she only cared about her own needs. Rodney didn't turn out to be what I expected. Overall, it was a good read with complex characters and I will definitely read more of the author's work in the future.
I really enjoyed this book. It deals with a sensitive topic like mental illness with just the right amount of detail. It is a gripping story that sucks you in right at the beginning and holds your attention the whole way through!
This is a solid psychological thriller that includes a diverse cast of characters--something sorely lacking from the genre.
I enjoyed the characters and wanted to spend more time learning about their pasts. I felt like the book would have benefited from time spent flushing out the characters' pasts to elucide their motivations. I would have been happy with condensing the plot to get to spend time with the characters.
The ending of this suspense definitely was surprising, but I wished we had more characterization and time spent on the past experience to really enhance our ability to empathize with the main characters.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest revue. Nina Taylor had a breakdown after the suicide of her brother and the guilt she felt. Now married to Rodney, and with 2 daughters she is still struggling to keep life on an even keel. It is a constant struggle and Deja, a rather unlikely friend, is someone she can trust. Or is she? This is a multi layered story, with some surprising revelations along the way. It kept me reading!
This book was not what I was expecting, in a good way. Nina Taylor is someone that has had to deal with her close brother committing suicide, her guilt over the suicide, her broken engagement, her mental breakdown after the fact, her husband almost divorcing her, her husband going behind her back and having an affair with a woman that would pretend to become her best friend, and so much more. What she has had to go through in this book is something that could turn anyone crazy. The guilt over her brother's suicide overwhelmed her so much that she had a mental breakdown. Her husband never really loved her before but he really didn't love her or try to pretend to love her after her breakdown. This caused her to spiral more.
The way the author allows her readers to get inside Nina's mind, to see her mental health firsthand is something I have never seen in a book before. It's something that helped me realize the dangers of mental health but also to realize how alone it is. She thought her husband was cheating and since he denied it, it made her spiral. But, he was. Other things that happened that people told her was just in her mind, but it was real. Her pretend best friend and her crazy ex-boyfriend created a plan to make Nina and everyone she loved think she was going insane. It almost worked. It was so close to working. Until Nina found out herself. This story is beautiful. This story is something everyone should read.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read Everything She Lost by Alessandra Harris.
This story concentrates on mental illness of a young woman and her struggle to maintain her life, her family, and her sanity.
Well written, but complicated as this topic is - it is definitely a great woman's book - brings a voice to speak of the struggles of mental illness.
Good Book.
The main character, Nina was a favorite, but by the end I was hoping for more completion of her story, even if the ending was what I wanted to happen. Her mental health issues were covered in a way that kept me wanting to keep reading, but the relationship she had with the others in the book seemed like we needed more detail. I would have loved more about her brother & Damien & her parents.
I would still recommend this title, and enjoyed reading it.

After the first couple of pages I was sure that I would not be able to finish this book! I persevered though and am very happy I did. I have been reading nonstop ever since and am almost done. So I just finished the book and feel very ambivalent about it. Yes it definitely kept my attention but the ending didn’t tie up all the loose things and suggestions that had been going on from the beginning. It starts out with Nina meeting her therapist who by the way is a delightful character, and from then on Nina’s previous breakdown keeps being mentioned but never explained and why it has caused so much trouble in her and her children’s lives that she can’t even show her face at the school. She has one “friend” who sleeps around with her husband and everyone else but again Deja is being portrayed as someone with something terrible secret from the past which just gets hinted about and then you get sucked into trying to figure out what’s really going on. The ending unfortunately doesn’t do the book credit and seems like a student in school who has to write 500 words and just add words to fill the space. A lot of unanswered questions left me still very ambivalent about this book. I don’t know if I would recommend this book or not. On one hand it did keep my attention for quite a while and on the other hand I was very disappointed with the ending.
Is a nervous breakdown hitting rock bottom? Or is the recovery going to be a constant challenge? Can the simplest of responsibilities and task help keep a solid hold on a woman’s sanity? Can a kindhearted and fragile soul find comfort in her relationships or is she at risk of being a doormat? That’s the questions at the heart of Everything She Lost by Alessandra Harris.
Nina Taylor is in trying to recover the life she lost and is grateful her husband, Rodney, has allowed her to come back home to him and their two daughters. She needs the support of friends and finds her new friend, Deja Johnson, to be a lifeline. Or is Deja’s own challenges harming Nina’s grip on reality?
An intriguing look at life, betrayal, secrets, and survival with a poignant twist. An honest, if sometimes dark look at what it means to be human. One of the best books I’ve read so far this year.
Thanks to Net Galley, Alessandra Harris, and Red Adept Publishing for the Arc. Opinions are my own.
