It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here; Sarah Morgan's first venture into women's fiction, and I can honestly say it was worth the wait. Finally Morgan has taken a step towards a genre, which will give her the opportunity to show her full potential. Not that she has to prove how talented she is as a writer or storyteller, but this means she has less boundaries fencing her creativity and talent in.
The story is about three generations of the Stewart women, their relationships with each other, and the secrets they keep to make sure they all stay safe. The focus is on Lauren and Jenna, sisters who know each other like the back of their hands or at least they both think they do. The main thing they have in common is a disdain for the mother they both experienced as aloof and neglectful.
Jenna still lives near her childhood home on Martha's Vineyard. Her whole life revolves around becoming pregnant and having a baby, to the point of putting her marriage on the line. Lauren is trying to deal with her obnoxious teenage daughter and her husband, who seems to be focused on everything other than his family.
Nancy has been keeping her own painful secrets in order to protect her daughters. Then when tragedy strikes in the family she finds herself having to confront her past and her fears in order to heal wounds of the past.
There is an emphasis on the tenuous strings holding people and relationships together, and the way they are easily shattered. Words said in haste, being in the wrong place at the right time and not having the courage to speak out. All things that can change the course of a life.
The author as a very distinctive style when it comes to story-telling. It's a mixture of pure honest emotion, the intricacies of relationships, and her flair for timing and creating the kind of scenes that tug at your heartstrings.
The story of the Stewart's is subtle and relatable. It speaks to the mother and daughter relationships we all experience, often struggle with, and yet ultimately are also driven by and flourish because of them. The sisterhood that exists, albeit it often subconsciously, and regardless of whether via blood connection or not, to support each other in times of struggle.
The secrets we keep usually don't stay buried forever.
It's a successful and exciting new venture for Morgan, and I hope just the beginning of many more.
I very much enjoyed this book. It was a different type of story to how Sarah normally writes but i actually think it was a better book for it.
Lauren and Ed and their daughter Mackenzie live in London and on the day of Ed's 40th birthday tragedy strikes and Lauren and Mackenzie have to leave their home and go back to Laurens childhood home in Marthas Vineyard. There Lauren has to navigate her mother Nancy, her sister Jenna, and a familiar face from the past.
A really good story, i would be really interested to see this storyline continue, maybe with a time jump and we could concentrate on Jenna and Greg.
This book is a total departure from Sarah's normal stories but it was a beautiful and captivating read. I enjoyed how the various relationships in this family played out and came together when they needed to. Highly recommended
A riveting book about families and the secrets they hold. A story about a mother and her two daughters who have always had unspoken problems which come to a head when one daughter is forced to return home. Somewhere she had avoided for most of her life and she and her sister uncovers truths from their childhoods. A great read. Will certainly be reading more form this author.
This book was really sweet - it is the first book I have read of Sarah Morgan’s and I am looking forward to reading her earlier books.
The book opens with Lauren and Ed on the morning of his 40th birthday. Lauren has a birthday bash planned for him that night but he seems distracted and their teenage daughter is acting up which is completely out of character.
Next we meet Lauren’s sister Jenna and her husband Greg. Jenna and Greg are very much in love but the one thing Jenna wants more than anything else is a baby and it just isn’t happening!!
And finally we meet their mother, Nancy. While the two sisters have a wonderful relationship their relationship with their mother is somewhat stilted and has been since they were kids.
When tragedy strikes the family, the three generations of the family are forced together and its then that a whole pile of secrets are revealed.
Sarah Morgan tells the story beautifully with just the right amount of humour. Lauren’s daughter did however come across as a lot younger than 16 (I have a sixteen year old myself) or perhaps she was just immature for her she. As I said at the start it’s a great book.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced read copy of the book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
A lovely read, all about family, relationships and the damage that secrets can do. 3 generations of women thrown together in unexpected circumstances, finding their way, and finding out so much about the past and how that has shaped their present.
Thank you to Net Galley for a copy in exchange for a review.
This is a feel-good read full of drama, romance and laughter. The storyline is about three generations of family, being brave and opening up to new love.
A romantic and splendidly atmospheric novel. My thanks to the author, the publisher and Net Galley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
A book I was loath to put down. It had all the threads to keep you gripped right to the end. It's one of those times you want more, but are also racing to see how it all end up.
Wow what can I say? For a start this is my first Sarah Morgan book, how come I never knew about this author!! What have I been missing out on!!
How can I, a mere mortal do this beautifully written book justice. Definitely the best family drama book I’ve read ,which made me smile, laugh and cry!!
When Tragedy strikes for Lauren, she and her sulky teenager Mack move to Martha’s Vineyard to be near her mother Nancy and sister Jenna. We find out why Nancy wasn’t the most maternal mother and secrets are revealed. The three generations must learn to live together and their story is an emotional rollercoaster that had me gripped.
I loved the description of Martha’s Vineyard and would love to live there myself, reading about the Stewards was like putting on a cosy pair of slippers as by the end of the book I felt like I knew them all and cared about what would happen to them all. I didn’t want to finish this book I wanted to be left fully immersed with this incredible family!!
A massive thank you to Netgalley for my copy of this book in exchange for a review.
A very easy read, perfect for the summer. Different plot threads, interesting characters and slow reveals keep you hooked.
A great holiday read and one for the beach. I liked the setting of Martha's Vineyard as have visited there and made my feel nostalgic.
A great story which unfolded along with secrets the women had been keeping from each other.
I adored this book. From London to Martha's Vineyard in what seemed a well off background but where there were struggles like everyone else has. Lauren seems to have it all, a successful, loving husband and a teenage daughter, she's working on getting her career in interior design on track when her husband' 40th birthday party doesn't quite go to plan. So Lauren heads back to where she came from, to move in with her mother in Martha's Vineyard in the USA. Her daughter is a Londoner and struggles to fit in. Lauren and her sister Jenna are very close, but they have never enjoyed a good relationship with their mother who preferred interacting with her painting than her daughters, so their dad spent more time with them. We wonder from the start what the family secret is that Lauren and Jenna discovered while young, and why it has had such an effect on their lives. We are involved in their current lives and will them all to mend fences and make a dysfunctional family more than functional. We laugh with them, we cry with them, we discover their secret and more besides. This is more than a "chick lit" novel, and I'll be reading more Sarah Morgan. #netgalley #HowToKeepASecret
I absolutely love Sarah Morgan’s books. I have been a huge fan for many years.
This book was a great read as always and loved every minute.
Set in London and Martha's Vineyard. It's all about the Secrets that members of a family keep from one another. Thoroughally enjoyed this book and would recommend it to a friend.
Sarah Morgan is one of my favourite authors and I have been looking forward to a new book by her and this one did not disappoint. It was a little more deep and meaningful than her other books, definitely not a light-hearted chick lit read but still brilliant.
The characters were great, three generations each with their own tale and personality. I highly recommend it for a good summer read that has a little more substance to it.
Jenna and Lauren are sisters and have always looked out for each other.... especially after they discovered a secret that they could not share with anyone! Growing up on Martha's Vineyard they adored the adventures they had with their father, although their mother was always distant and totally absorbed in her painting. So when tragedy happens in Lauren's life she returns home with her teenage daughter Mack to live with her mother at the Captain's house...... but can old secrets be overcome and what about ghosts from the past.... can people really change!
I loved this book from the setting to the storyline to the characters. I have always loved Sarah Morgan books but this one seemed to have more depth to it and dragged me in right from the beginning.
This book was an absolute delight to read. Believable characters and thought provoking plot. A perfect holiday read, recommended wholeheartedly.
The story is about three generations of the same family keeping secrets to protect other members of the family. Do these secrets protect or hurt the family.
Lauren and Jenna have kept a secret from their mother, Nancy, for decades. Nancy Is keeping a secret from her daughters and Mackenzie, Lauren’s daughter is trying to find her place in the world.
When Lauren’s husband dies suddenly she comes home to live with her mother and to try and help her daughter heal. Secrets start to be revealed. You will empathise with the women as they find new places within their world and their family.
I really enjoyed this book and think it’s the perfect beach read.
Thanks to NetGalley and HQ for an ARC in return for an honest review.
The title of the book tells you all you need to know. A family with secrets, mother not telling daughters, daughters not telling mother, sister not telling sister. Trouble was, none of the secrets to my mind were so earth shattering that they were worth all the angst of keeping them to one's self for so many years.
Having said that it was a pleasant enough read for the first two thirds of the book but it all dragged on too much for my liking.
A pleasant enough read for holiday reading when an undemanding story is required but not engrossing enough for me.
Wonderful. A emotional roller coaster. Excellent holiday reading. Hard to put down and couldn't wait to restart reading it.
