This was my first Sarah Morgan book and I'm sure it won't be my last.
Following tragic events Lauren and her daughter Mack have to move back to Lauren's' childhood home in Martha's Vineyard from London where she first had her heart broken. Nancy, the matriarch of the family is carrying secrets as are both the sister Lauren and Jenna, as the story unfolds the secrets are revealed and the family is drawn closer together.
'How to keep a secret' was a bit of a slow burner compared to similar beach reads, but I ended up really enjoying it. While there is romance at the heart of the story, this is really a family saga, one of four women who are not as close as their family bonds would suggest. The twists and turns of their reunion are enjoyable and kept me interested all the way through.
The main setting is an East Coast island, which really adds to the beach read feel, but because it starts in London that wasn't initially apparent. I also liked the age range of the main characters, which was developed through different narrative perspectives - this also helped build a bit of suspense as the secrets were gradually revealed.
I'd really give this 3.5 stars, but that wasn't an option!
The first book I've read by this author and it was very enjoyable really likable characters and a great story after a family tragedy Lauren and Mack move to Martha's vineyard and here the story really takes off loved imagining myself in this fabulous location with other family members and reconnecting with a lost love It was a tale of love, family and descovering past secrets a really great read
I really enjoyed this book. I laughed and I cried and I got totally caught up in the characters lives. There is a lot to this story. It is about love, secrets and betrayal. The characters are all really good and the descriptions of the scenery brought everything to life. I would definitely recommend this book and I will be looking out for more books by this author.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
oh I loved this book ! all the characters are great and I'm so happy things played out the way they did , I felt so bad for Lauren at the start but as her story progresses with the help of her mum, sister and daughter and a handsome hunk on the beach as secrets get spilled they stand strong and come together, I am a little disappointed that we didn't get to hear more about Nancy and Bill and Jenna and Greg too , in really hope one day we'll find out if they got their happy ever afters , the only reason it was 4 stars instead of 5 was because of that, a must read
This a refreshing summery read about how a family who have to pull together to overcome all of their own issues. The change of character perspective was good and kept the story moving on well.. The characters are well-written and likeable, all-in-all, an easy, entertaining read.
Having read nearly all Sarah Morgan’s books I was eagerly anticipating the release of this one. It did not disappoint at all. The characters were all well written and the story flowed really well. Given the pre-release information about the book I think I was expecting it to be slightly more upsetting to read but it wasn’t. Really good story with the expected happy ending. Looking forward to reading her next book. A teaser for which was at the end of this one.
I have read many books by Sarah Morgan and have always enjoyed them , this was no exception! Her other books have been one of a series , so I was disappointed when I finished this book to know that I was saying goodbye to the characters. Perhaps if enough of us ask she may change her mind and let us know how the lives of the people in this book continue to evolve!
It is the story of three generations of women in a family and all of them have different life problems to cope with and it was impossible to put it down I read it late into the night on more than one occasion.
How to keep a Secret was another great book by Sarah. I have yet to find a book by this author that I haven’t loved.
There are three generations in the story from the same family, Nancy, her two daughters Lauren and Jenna and granddaughter Mackenzie all with their own problems and secrets.
A great stand alone book that you will struggle to put down.
Really enjoyable read.
Interesting mix of characters, and I liked how there were chapters from vaious points of view.
This wasn’t my usual genre of book but something about it appealed to me, and I so enjoyed it. It’s a tale of sadness and secrets which has kept a family at arms length from each other. A tragedy brings them all together and as they start to share their secrets they become stronger as a family unit. Thoroughly enjoyed this, and would highly recommend it.
Whenever I pick up a book by Sarah Morgan I can expect a story that will instantly pull me in along with getting to know some wonderful characters. How to Keep a Secret is a slight change in direction but what a charming and beautiful story it is. This book is told from four perspectives which I thought worked out so well especially as the characters were written with distinct and individual personalities. You have Nancy who is mother to Lauren and Jenna along with Lauren's daughter Mack. Now it's safe to say that they have a complicated relationship. Mainly due to the fact that there are some secrets that have simmered below the surface for quite some time. Although even the longest buried secrets have a way of being revealed and the reader gets to see the effects that this has on the Stewart family. The characters were developed brilliantly, sometimes when writing multiple characters along with different ages their personalities can be lost. However Sarah Morgan has created some balanced and well though out characters who truly shine.
I was well and truly wrapped up in this story and loved how the little details were revealed creating a slight tension within the story. I couldn't wait to discover all the secrets that this family have struggled to hold onto. There is romance in this book but it isn't the sole focus however it was written in such a stunning and wonderful way it enhances the overall story into something truly captivating!
How to Keep a Secret is about love, family and relationships all beautifully and expertly written by Sarah Morgan. There is a real warmth to the story showing both the ups and downs of life.
Five stars from me!
With thanks to Isabel at HQ for my copy.
I have read many of Sarah Morgan's books and find they are ideal to curl up under the duvet with a warm drink in the winter or read outside in the sun in the summer. This novel is no exception.
From the start I had a connection with the two sisters as they sneak out as children to witness something that will impact the rest of their lives. As adults they have different lives; Lauren with her rich husband in London and Jenna with her more modest lifestyle in Martha's Vineyard, America. I loved them both and as the story developed enjoyed the interaction between the two. Mack, Lauren's daughter took me back to my own teenage years and the emotions that went with it. Nancy, her grandmother was the hardest character to connect with but as secrets were revealed it was easy to understand her actions and she grew on me. This novel felt more involved and the relationships had more depth than Sarah Morgan's previous novels so was a pleasure to read. The characters were more real and it had a greater sense of place. I have fallen in love with places described by her in other books such as Manhattan, Puffin Island and the Snow Crystal resort but Martha's Vineyard is something else. I wanted to sink my feet into the sand on the beach and walk through the rooms of The Captain's House.
It is a tale about sisters, the secrets they share and those they keep to themselves and how secrets keep people close but can tear them apart. It made me think about the relationship between my own sister and made me want to pick up the phone just to say hello. It is emotional with its heart break but also uplifting as strength of the characters shines through.
I was disappointed to reach the last page because I did want to leave them and the house behind.
I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing a few of Sarah’s books now. When I heard that she had a new book (‘How To Keep A Secret’) in the pipeline, I read the synopsis and I just knew that I had to read it. I got hold of a copy and I began to read. I was not to be disappointed as I absolutely and totally loved reading it but more about that in a bit.
The main characters in this book are three generations of women from the same family. Nancy is the matriarch of the family, her two daughters are called Lauren and Jenna and her granddaughter is called Mackenzie. Each character has their own problems. Nancy knows that she hasn’t exactly been mother of the year material and I got the impression that she finds it hard to show emotion. There is a reason for Nancy’s behaviour but we don’t initially find out what that is and she certainly hasn’t told her daughters yet. Lauren and Jenna are hiding a secret. In the past they discovered a devastating secret but they made the decision to keep that secret from their mother. Lauren and Jenna also have other issues. Jenna feels that Lauren is her mother’s favourite daughter and that her mother thinks that Lauren is perfect with the perfect family. There is a huge amount of jealousy there but I don’t mean that nastily. Jenna has been trying for a baby for quite a long time but sadly she hasn’t fallen pregnant. You can imagine how Jenna feels when she sees Lauren with her daughter. Jenna feels as if her infertility is being rubbed in her face. Jenna has always felt that their mother has kept her at a distance which she struggles with a bit. Jenna does get on with her mother but they don’t have as close a relationship as some mothers and daughters have. Lauren has her own problems. Her daughter is going through the normal teenage angst years and she is being rather unpleasant to her parents, but then most teenagers are. For the time being Lauren and Mack are not that close and Lauren finds it hard to get any sort of information out of her daughter. Mack is closer to her father and this close relationship irritates Lauren, who is jealous. Add to the mix the fact that Lauren and her husband appear to be going through a bit of a cashflow problem, although Lauren isn’t aware of the full extent of those problems. She only begins to realise that something is up when her cards are declined.
I have to say that I was addicted on this book from the moment I picked up my review copy and began to read. The author’s writing style is such that you can’t fail to be drawn into the story from the first word on the first page and you are almost under the book’s spell until the moment you close the back page. The characters are so well described and the situations are so realistic that you actually begin to identify with certain characters and care about what they are going through. I really felt for Jenna because I know somebody who had trouble conceiving a child. All she wanted was a huge family but it just didn’t happen, so when she saw people conceiving with ease, she was understandably envious and upset. I became so addicted to reading this book and I cared about the characters so much that the pages just seemed to fly past in a blur. The pages were turning so quickly that it was almost as if they were turning themselves and before I knew what was happening I had finished well over a third of the book, but I hadn’t realised because I was enjoying the story so much and I was concentrating so much on the book. I usually have the attention span of a gnat but not in this case because I was able to shut out all other distractions and just focus my attention solely on this book.
Boy oh boy was this an emotive read or what? I am normally not that affected by what I read but I so was with ‘How To Keep A Secret’. On more than one occasion I felt myself develop a lump in my throat and tears threatened to spill over. I could literally put myself in the place of all of the main women in this book and I could totally understand why they were acting the way they were acting and the possible reasons behind this behaviour. There were times that I wanted to jump into the pages of this book and either give the characters a hug or a slap across the face with a wet fish or shake them by the shoulders. By the time I finished this book I really did feel as though I had been on an emotional rollercoaster with all the highs and lows and moments that affect you like a punch to the gut.
In conclusion I have to be honest and say that ‘How To Keep A Secret’ is Sarah Morgan’s best book yet. I would definitely recommend it to other readers. I can’t wait to see what comes next. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a well deserved 5* out of 5*.
Three generations of one family come together after a tragedy and loss. It if full of emotions and deals with real issues. The basis of the story is during a summer at Marthas' Vineyard. An emotional roller coaster and a great read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for an advanced copy of Sarah's new book which I really enjoyed.
I was slightly apprehensive at first as I had read that this was going to be different to Sarah's usual style of writing and it is at first. However, once I got into the story (didn't really take long) I found it was just like reading all her other books -totally enjoyable. Sarah is one of my favourite authors and every single one of her books has been brilliant.
Sisters Lauren and Jenna were best friends growing up, sharing almost everything with each other - including keeping a secret that they witnessed when they were really young. Marriage has resulted in them living on different sides of the world and they now have secrets in their marriages that they haven’t shared with each other. Their mother has many regrets about her daughters’ childhood but she kept things secret to protect them. Lauren is worried about her own teenage daughter, Mackenzie, who is rejecting her efforts to connect and it will take for a shocking death, a revelation at the funeral and financial surprises to bring the three generations back together again.
The story provides plenty of angst and drama that it is easy to relate to. I loved all the characters and recommend this book as it certainly doesn't disappoint.
This is the story of a fractured family who are healed through the power of love. The path to healing is not without some stumbles along the way but with the help of close ties, and friendship, these women are successful. A great summer read.
A couple of years ago I was looking for a fun read and I stumbled upon Sleepless in Manhattan. As a big lover of New York, I am quickly drawn to every book that is set in the Big Apple and, after reading the blurb, I decided to give it a try. Two years and six books later I am now a huge fan of Sarah Morgan and I am always excited when she has a new book coming out.
HOW TO KEEP A SECRET is a bit different from her Manhattan books, but I loved it nonetheless. For starters this one is a stand-alone – which is the only thing I didn’t like about this book because I loved the characters and I’d love to read more about them. Also, the novel is set in Martha’s Vineyard and I really loved this setting with its beautiful beaches and the community vibe.
The protagonists of this novel are four women, independent and strong-willed, but each one of them has a secret. It seems that Nancy always put her career as a painter first, even before her daughters Lauren and Jenna who always found their mother distant and unapproachable. Lauren’s beautiful life in London is shattered after a tragedy and she is forced to leave everything and move back to Martha’s Vineyard with her sixteen-year-old daughter Mack, even if that means facing someone from her past. Jenna’s struggle to get pregnant has taken over her life and she can’t think of anything else. And Mack’s change of moods is not due only to the fact that she is a teenager. And when these four women come together, their secrets risk to come to light. Will the revelations bring them closer or will the truth separate them?
Once again, I found myself completely engrossed in a novel by Sarah Morgan, in her flawless writing, in her characters, in their compulsive stories, and the atmospheric settings. HOW TO KEEP A SECRET is a fascinating, sharp, and entertaining read, the perfect novel to immerse yourself this summer and I’d like to thank HQ and Isabel Smith for providing me with an advanced copy of the book and for inviting me to take part in the blog tour.
When you pick up a book by Sarah Morgan. You know you are guaranteed a good read.
How to keep a secret is a little different from her usual books. How ever don't let this stop you picking up a copy. The Stewart family are full of secrets. The problem with secrets is that they don't always stay hidden. Eldest daughter Lauren is living in London with her husband and teen aged daughter Mack. Lauren believes she has her life carefully controlled. Her daughter is acting out, and her husband isn't acting himself. While waiting for her husband to arrive at his birthday party. There is a knock on the door. Its the police, her husband has passed away at his desk. What follows on from that is shock after shock. Lauren and Mack have no choice but to move back to the US.
Jenna has her own problems she is desperate to start a family but doesn't feel like she can talk to anyone. Neither sister have a warm relationship with their mother Nancy who has her own secret.
When they finally do start to share whats going on, its the start of a new closer relationship for them all. My take away from this is that, never assume you know how someone is thinking. You really don't. Opening up can be the start of a whole new dialogue. I highly recommend this book, it one that you will continue to think of after its ended. ARC received from Net galley and as part of Mills & Boon insiders.
I read this book in just two days. It is the first book by Sarah Morgan that I have read and I can’t wait to read another. It was a real page turner wondering what the family secret was. When I found out I couldn’t wait to see how it would evolve.. There were some twists and turns in this book but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it.
