I received a digital ARC of #WhereTheMissingGo from #NetGalley for an honest review.
I was hooked from the beginning and didn't want to put it down! I thought I had worked out who "he" was but it turns out that I was wrong. I certainly didn't see that twist coming! I can't really say much more without spoiling it, but I would recommend it and will look out for any books by this author in the future.
I really loved this book! Excellent story with brilliant main characters. I would recommend this book.
My name is Kate she is a volunteer at a missing person . She gets a phone call that Sophie is called and she tells Kate that she must let her parents know .
Kate is her mother and she knows she’s not safe . Thank you Netgallery for the ARC

There are times you sit to write a review and you look through your notes and highlightings and struggle to piece together exactly how you felt when you read a particular book. This is not the case here. Instead as I opened the book I had a blast of the things I adored as they pelted me full force from the beautiful, simple descriptions that left you under no illusions as to the love of Kate Harlow for her daughter Sophie, who disappeared from her home, to the insights into what happens when somebody goes missing.
You know I very rarely play the ‘I won’t tell you too much in case I spoil it for you’ card, but honestly here, I think it’s the way to go. I will tell you that this book is a little bit different to most I’ve read in that you have some clue as to what happened to Sophie when she went missing (holds breath trying to stop from saying it) and also that the moment her mother, who works at a helpline for missing people, gets the call is set up perfectly!
If I could have read this in one sitting I most definitely would have but, as it was I flew through it, absolutely invested in every single word leading to a conclusion that I had set up in my head totally wrong and that was brilliant. Most definitely a favourite book of mine for this year and one I’ll be recommending to anyone who wants a thriller! I hope hope hope there’ll be plenty more from this author. Thanks so much to Orion and Netgalley for the book in return for an honest review.
Rating: 5/5
Where The Missing Go is a good psychological thriller which twists and turns to make an addictive read.
For me, I found the first third of the story (Part 1) slow going and slightly boring while the background of Sophie’s disappearance was built up and the effects it had on the family along with Kate’s reaction of losing her daughter and blaming herself. That said, I did stick with it and the rest of the book was pulsating and thrilling, ensuing that you just had to keep reading just one more chapter (followed by another and another).
Where the missing go
After Kate’s daughter Sophie went missing she joined a missing persons helpline, one night while alone in the office she receives a broken call from a run away who Kate believes to be Sophie. Kate has always felt that there was more to Sophie’s disappearance and following the phone call and a disjointed conversation with an elderly friend, she decides to start delving deeper into this mystery and soon discovers more than she bargained for.
A fairly fast paced thriller with a great storyline, with an ending I wasn’t expecting.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this and look forward to more.
I was immediately intrigued by the premise of this book and friends, I am thrilled to report it did not disappoint!
As a result of her daughter Sophie going missing 2 years ago, Kate has dedicated herself to the message in a bottle helpline, a helpline where missing persons can phone in and leave a message to be passed on to their loved ones, no questions asked.
One night whilst Kate is working at the helpline, she answers one such call. Although the call is broken at times, Kate realises this is no ordinary caller. The caller sounds like her daughter Sophie, frightened and desperate for help!
But is it really her or is Kate hearing what she desperately wants to hear?
My mind was buzzing with questions:
Where is Sophie?
Why did she disappear?
Is Kate's desperation leading her towards a breakdown?
Taking me a little while to get into at first, the story picked up pace nicely beyond the 25% mark. Spicing things up with an abundance of red herrings, the author had me questioning who exactly was telling the truth. Add in some unexpected plot developments and tension filled moments, I was hooked as the clues kept coming.
The author's writing truly had me feeling Kate's love for her daughter, her raw emotions of determination, anxiety and her frustration in trying to get her daughter back.
The conclusion had me feeling giddy as the pace picked up further still. I could not read fast enough!
Definitely recommended if you're looking for a fast paced, clever, twisty page turner, written by an author who is masterfully skilled at grabbing your attention, I thoroughly enjoyed the roller coaster ride!
Many thanks to Netgalley, Orion Publishing and the talented Emma Rowley for an advanced copy in exchange for my unbiased opinion of this book.
A brilliantly written thriller with more twist and turns then any other book I've read in awhile. There where so many suspects, that I just couldn't figure out the who-dunnit. The very intense and creepy feeling added a whole lot to the reading experience and made this book stand out. I highly recommend this book if you're in the mood for some psychological mind games. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group!
Where the Missing Go has a great hook and is a well-written and disturbing mystery thriller.
It is a pretty fast-paced story and particularly picks up speed about a quarter of the way through. I must admit that prior to that point, I had struggled to really connect with Kate or Sophie. However, thereafter the story takes off in an exciting new direction and you are really rooting for Kate!
There are some dramatic and unexpected plot developments and lots of moments of tension as the story plays out and the clues start to come crashing together. Emma Rowley really makes you feel Kate’s anxiety and frustration as well as her determination.
The conclusion ramps up the pace even further; it is thrilling and exciting and I was flying through the pages to see what would happen. This is a really good fiction debut and I look forward to seeing what Emma Rowley writes next.
Thank you to NetGalley and Orion for the ARC of Where the Missing Go.
Wow what a brilliant story. So many twist and turns it kept me guessing right to the end. A easy five stars from me.
Two years ago Kate's daughter Sophie went missing, the police investigated it and when they found nothing they assumed she had run away and closed the case, but Kate never believed she would do that and, when one night Kate receives a call at the Missing Persons Helpline where she volunteers, and that call comes from Sophie herself, Kate is determined to find out what is going on and bring her daughter back home, but things are never as simple as they seem.
This is a fast paced debut thriller by an author that certainly knows how to grab the readers attention and keep you hooked, I was gripped from the first chapter and enjoyed the unexpected twists along the way and I look forward to reading more by this author soon. Thank you to Orion Publishing for the approval, I will post my review on Goodreads and Amazon.
Warning- do not start this book unless you have time to spare- you will not be able to put it down. One fo those that makes you want to read faster and faster as you just have to know what happens. Two years ago sixteen year old Sophie disappeared. She ran away when she should have been at school and then at friends house overnight. Since then she has sent the occasional postcard and the police have scaled down their investigation. Her mother and father have since split. Kate, her mother, volunteers for the “Message in a bottle” helpline where runaways can leave a message for their loved ones “no questions asked”. This is written in the first person from Kate’s perspective which gives it an intense and very personal feel. I felt instantly drawn in, especially as the prologue gives, we think, Sophie’s voice. This is written with a passion so much so that you almost feel that you are Kate and are with her every step of the way. Through the “what if’s” and small finds that the police have already looked into and got nowhere. I won’t spoil it but let’s just say a woman intuition isn’t to be sniffed at. I really couldn’t put this down. I read 240+ books a year and less than 10% of them get my 5** rating. This one deserves it in spades. Wow! A highly emotive read.
An excellent drama which shows the love of a mother and the lengths she will go to to ensure that her daughter is safe when all other have given up hope and stopped searching for her.
I loved the author’s style of writing, how she dealt with sensitive areas such as grief, domestic abuse, mental health and dementia.
I thought that the balance of the main character Kate, was brilliant. She was determinedly strong, but not to such an extreme that she appeared to be an unrealistic superhero. She at times showed her weakness and relied on prescription medication (as I think most people would in her situation - daughter missing and nobody believes what you’re saying and thinks you’re having a breakdown!)
I highly recommend this book and will be looking forward to reading another by the same author.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advance Kindle copy in exchange for an honest review.
What an incredible book! Hooked form the very first chapter, I found myself sneaking off to bed early just so I could read it without distraction. I found myself reading it at any opportunity I could. The characters are complex and the plot incredible. I thought I had it figured out but NOPE! It completely draws you in, in such a way that your are not only emotionally invested in the people involved but desperate to find out what happens! A fantastic page turner, incredibly well written with a fantastic pace that grips you from the start.
Wow!
This was an amazing read and more so given it's a debut novel!
It keeps the suspense alive though you may think you know or guess what's about to come.
Also has plenty of thrills and action.
This is the story of Kate Harlow whose 16 yo daughter Sophie just went away one day two years ago.
With the police treating it as a voluntary disappearance and the case becoming cold, everyone has moved on.
But Kate wants closure, she blames herself and keeps going over what she could have done differently. Her instinct keeps pushing her to go on looking, to find out what happened. She volunteers for a helpline where the 'missing' can anonymously phone in messages for their families to let them know they are safe.
And one day, she gets the call she has been waiting for... her daughter says she is safe but doesn't want further contact...
With everyone around her sceptical, Kate is forced to question whether it was Sophie indeed, was she just believing what she wanted to, should she learn to let go?
But what if Sophie needs her?
What if she is actually right?
The writing is smooth and kept me totally engrossed. Towards the end, I got really caught up in the action and so this was a 4.5 * read for me.
This is the kind of book that will keep you trurnimg the pages hoping for the best outcome! A gripping tale of a mother who’s daughter is missing and the continued fight she has to find her when those around her have given up. Heart wrenching, gripping and a page turner.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Kate's daughter disappeared, appearing to have run away, but Kate has always harboured doubts over the circumstances of her daughter's disappearance..
Kate now volunteers at a missing person helpline and one evening she receives a call from a young girl called Sophie. Kate's daughter.
I loved this book. It is written with such depth that you can feel Kate's despair throughout and the truth about what really happened to Sophie makes for a twisty conclusion.
An absolutely BRILLIANT book. I ploughed through it in a day because I simply had to know what was going on.
Lots of suspense, excellent description and dialogue and a twist I didn’t see coming.
Highly recommended.
