I thought this book was well written and a bit of a rollercoaster. The basic premise is that Rose wakes up in a field with her car covered in blood and no memory of what happened. Has she hit someone? Then her daughters boyfriend, who Rose does not like, I’d reported missing.
Rose is not a very likeable character but you want to know what she did and is it linked to something in the past?
I read this in a couple of days and loved how the story unfolded. Would definately read this author again.
I really enjoyed the storyline in this book, the ending was not the one I was expecting. I have enjoyed this author’s previous books, and this new one did not disappoint. Brilliant and highly recommended.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Kerry Wilkinson for the copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
Wow! This is a fabulous psychological drama. It's a real page turner that had me hooked throughout. One of those writers that makes you stay up late and then gives you butterflies when you wake at 0530 because you know it's waiting for you.....or is it just me that has those moments?!
The story begins with a female lead character who wakes up in her car, in a field and with blood on the bonnet and it doesn't let you go as the story advances.
It's a fabulous read that I'd heartily recommend for those who loved early Linwood Barclay and Harlan Coben. It's as good as their earlier books which, in my opinion, were their best. It's a true psychological drama, but, with humour that, at times, made me laugh out loud.
The only negative is that I'd worked out the culprit, but, very near the end of the book and it didn't spoil the read.
Thanks so much to @netgalley and @bookouture for the opportunity to preview this excellent read.
Rose Denton wakes up in her car. She has no memory of how she got there. But she knows something bad happened…
There’s blood on the windscreen and bonnet – but it’s not hers and there’s no sign of anything or anyone she might have hit. The last thing she remembers is being in a hotel on a business trip but now she’s miles away.Back home and her daughter’s boyfriend is missing. The last thing he did was argue with Rose over money. He left no note, no text, no clue as to his whereabouts.
The police have questions – and so does Rose’s family. But those are little compared to the ones she has for herself.
What happened last night? And, perhaps more importantly, does she really want to know the answer?
A totally addictive psychological thriller which will keep you turning the pages until the final dramatic twist.
“Last Night” was a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat read that kept me guessing throughout! I love a story that starts off with a jammed packed scene that automatically sets the stage for the rest of the story!
When Rose woke up in a field in the wee hours of the morning not knowing how she got there or why there was blood all over her car, I immediately began trying to piece together the events! Kerry Wilkinson did a great job untangling the web of suspects carefully which kept me questioning who I thought was behind this crazy set of events!
I almost made it to the end without guessing! I figured it out close to the end but coming to this realization didn’t ruin the story at all. I was pleased to see how the cast of characters were connected. He did a great job making me think that everyone was guilty! I went through each chapter trusting each character less and less!
With a perfect number of twists and sprinklings and smatterings of doubt throughout the story, Wilkinson managed to write a fabulous book! I look forward to reading more of his work!!
3.5*
Rose just had the oddest of nights. On her drive home from an out-of-town meeting, she mysteriously awakens in her car, in the middle of a field. Drawing a complete blank, no clue what happened, how she got there. And just to add to the shock of it all, Rose notices blood on her windshield! But she’s unhurt...and there is no one else around.
Rose is a woman shrouded in mystery. What happened all those years ago that she doesn’t want anyone discovering? What exactly happened in that field? And why won’t she confide in her husband?
Rose has been convinced she’s losing her mind.
Her car keys are in the fridge, her work card is missing, AND to remind you...Rose waking up in the field! Is someone gas lighting her? Or is she really losing it?
This is the second book by Kerry Wilkinson I‘ve read. While I absolutely loved The Girl Who Came Back this one didn’t quite rise to the same level. Don’t get me wrong - it had all the mystery and twists I look for, but it never “grabbed me.” I missed the connection with Rose.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Kerry Wilkinson for this ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

I was lost in the mushy, grassy field in the desolate coulee with Kaceey and Susanne reading Last Night. Things started off a bit slow for us with this story and at times we wanted to nod off in the coulee, however, there was enough suspense to the story to keep us turning the pages right to the end.
Kerry Wilkinson does a good job creating an interesting, unlikable, and unreliable character here with our main character Rose. A dense fog soon fell over us in the coulee as we tried to piece together along with Rose the missing pieces from her memory. She kept us guessing as she created confusion with some twists and turns and we could feel her fear with every turn she took. The tension built for us as she starts to unravel the mystery of what happened last night and in the end, the fog cleared and we were satisfied with the ending.

Coulee: a term applied rather loosely to different landforms, all of which refer to a kind of valley.
Kept me up all night, I had a feeling I knew what was coming but was so surprised at the end, I devour all of Kerry wilkinson books and wasn't disappointed, keep up the good work
I have previously read all the 'Jessica Daniel' series of books by the same author and was delighted to receive an advance copy of Last Night from Kerry Wilkinson and NetGalley. A different perspective in that it was not from a police point of view but from that of a victim. Or is she? Rose Denton wakes up in a car in a field in the middle of the night. The outside of the car is covered with blood. She has no idea how she got there or even more alarmingly whose blood it is. She tries to act normally but her work and marriage are suffering, her daughter's boyfriend has gone missing and she believes she is losing her mind. A quickly developing story that has the reader hooked from the beginning. It has many twists, turns and revealing plots, until the final shocking conclusion. I absolutely loved this book and it was a joy to read something totally different from Kerry Wilkinson that was just as enjoyable as the Jessica Daniel series.
I really struggled with this book at the beginning. Some of it having to do when the police are called and they give her a case number, they didn't come to the house to check on a burglary call?? Is that how they do that in Europe??
The book did pick up, with Rose trying to figure out why she woke up in a blood covered car. She doesn't trust her husband or her own memories. She tries to follow the clues to what really happened that night. The ending luckily picked up.
This is a standalone book. I have read the series featuring DS Jessica Daniel and absolutely loved them. So I was looking forward to Last Night and it certainly didn’t disappoint, The opening grabs you with Rose, waking up in a ditch in her car which is covered in blood. She has no recollection of how she ended up there. She doesn’t tell anyone about this and tries to discover herself what happened to her. Rose then has to confront her past as well as the breakdown of her marriage and her strained relationship with her daughter. The plot has many layers with lots to think about, There are plenty of twists and turns as Rose’s life begins to unravel with an unexpected ending. Totally gripping, don’t miss reading this book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
EXCERPT : There's blood on my windscreen.
It's in the corner, a few speckled spots and then a thicker pool towards the bottom. . . How to explain what I’m seeing?
ABOUT THIS BOOK: It’s the early hours of the morning and Rose Denton wakes up behind the steering wheel of her car. She’s off the road, through a hedge and in a field.
There’s blood on the windscreen and bonnet – but it’s not hers and there’s no sign of anything or anyone she might have hit. The last thing she remembers is being in a hotel on a business trip but now she’s miles away.
Back home and her daughter’s boyfriend is missing. The last thing he did was argue with Rose over money. He left no note, no text, no clue as to his whereabouts.
The police have questions – and so does Rose’s family. But those are little compared to the ones she has for herself.
What happened last night? And, perhaps more importantly, does she really want to know the answer?
MY THOUGHTS: Apart from the OMG moment towards the end, Last Night by Kerry Wilkinson proceeds at an orderly pace, posing many questions about what may or may not have happened that Rose can't remember. In fact there are a lot of things happening that makes Rose think that she is losing her mind, or perhaps being set up.
Rose has something in her past that she doesn't want revealed, and it wasn't hard to guess what that was. This should have created a greater sense of mystery and suspense than it did.
I didn't much like Rose, who is self-absorbed, spies on her workmates and then derides their lifestyle choices. I couldn't connect with her, and I think that this affected my enjoyment of this book. An enjoyable read, but not a particularly memorable one. 3.5 stars.

This is the first book that I have read by Kerry Wilkinson meaning I didn't really have a clue as to what to expect, so what did I think...
I'm going to be pretty vague about the plot of Last Night as I would hate to ruin the story with any spoilers. What I will say is that it kept me on my toes with a plot that made me suspicious of everyone and everything. There is an almost claustrophobic effect that surrounds the story as the reader is as much in the dark as Rose.
The secrets and facts are revealed at perfect moments along the way often bringing up more questions however this just made me even more determined to discover the truth. Rose's hazy recollections of that night definitely help to ramp up the tension with revelations about the past being shown too. I'm not sure that I found Rose completely likeable but I think this just added to the mystery of her character and made things even more intriguing. I have to admit to having plenty of theories and I enjoyed trying to piece everything together. Kerry Wilkinson expertly built up the story along with my curiosity with just the right amount of tension and suspense.
With a pace that is guaranteed to keep you turning those pages, Last Night sent me on a very twisty journey before I finally discovered the truth!
Four stars from me!
With thanks to Noelle at Bookouture for my copy of the book. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Very good thriller. Kept me thinking. Worked out the ending but not too soon for it to disappoint. Look forward to reading others by this author.
I absolutely loved this book. Kept me guessing the entire time. I have never read anything by this author but can't wait to read more.
"This is what happens when you live with someone you can't stand. You make each other's lives a misery and, in the end, everyone loses."
"Is this me? Is this what I do? I destroy everything and everyone around me."
Kerry Wilkinson's Last Night is an impossible to put down character driven thriller featuring Rose, a middle age woman who finds herself parked in the middle of a field with no memory of what happened or how she got there. She discovers blood on her car's windshield, and frantically inspects the car for any signs of who or what she hit. Finding no evidence of bodily harm, Rose flees the scene. She washes the car clean of any evidence at home, and goes back to the humdrum of her daily life.
Despite her best efforts, Rose can't stop ruminating over that night. Rose's personal life takes a turn for the worst after that fateful night, too, causing her to worry that someone is out to get her family. Her 18-year-old daughter Olivia's boyfriend - a handsome but rough and tumble guy named Tyler from the wrong side of the tracks - goes missing after a fight with Olivia. This isn't the first time he's disappeared after a fight, but it is certainly the longest time he's left town.
Rose's work card is lost, but then reappears days later after she has turned her house upside down. Rose's house is broken into, but expensive items, like laptops and televisions, are left behind, with only a small amount of cash taken. Rose's boss also has Rose in the hot seat for her poor work performance and lack of professionalism. Finally, Rose and her husband of 18 years, Dan, are miserable together and plan to divorce. Dan seems to be pursuing a lover on the side, and Rose hints at doing the same.
Is someone taunting Rose for the sins of her past? Is Rose's husband seeking revenge amid divorce proceedings? Has Rose herself gone too far with Olivia's boyfriend, a guy Rose cannot stand but has put up with to remain close to her daughter? Or is someone else lurking in the shadows - a coworker, boss, fling, or trusted friend, someone seeking vengeance for Rose's unsavory deeds as a teenager or adult?
This book reminded me of Paula Hawkins' The Girl on the Train as it features a middle-aged woman struggling to keep things together in her personal life, which makes the reader question the narrator/Rose's claims. Is the narrator giving us the full picture, or are they concealing certain memories and events from the reader?
This book has so many quotable passages and memorable characters. Wilkinson has a talent for making characters come alive to the point it feels as though they are standing right next to you, urging you to be a part of the story. This was my first time reading his books, and I am looking forward to reading more from him.
Thank you to the author, Kerry Wilkinson, the publisher, Bookouture, and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of Last Night.
This is a standalone story from this author who has previously written a great series too.
It starts off very dramatically where Rose wakes in a ditch at the wheel of a car. This was the start of what I can say was an action packed read, thought provoking from start to finish.
She had been on a business trip.
We later find out what happened as the story goes back in parts then forward in time so we get to meet this in the middle. The author has cleverly lead me along a path he wanted me to follow.
Rose hasn't been doing so good in her job, her boss is not that keen she is falling behind. Rose isn't happy either and need to pull it back.
Her marriage is not ideal, her and her husband are like ships that pass in the night, you can see how they communicate only when they need to and I felt an atmosphere around that.
Neither of them where "in love" anymore, they were together out of habit maybe, no closeness at all.
They have a teenage daughter, shes in love. But her boyfriend has gone missing.
When Rose discovers blood on her car she can't help putting two and two together as a possibility.
Things start to happen where Rose starts to question herself, her reactions, her mind and her belief in herself.
We discover quite early on that Rose has a secret, what that is, we don't find out soon.
I thought the story opened up well, kick start and great lead to the middle keeping up the tempo right until the end. It certainly kept me on my toes.
I was hoping and praying that it wouldn't end in the 'obvious'.
What happened the night Rose can't remember?
Who was Stephen?
And.....where was her daughters boyfriend. He had gone off for days before but always returned, not this time though.
At first Rose wasn't too worried and her daughter sensed this as her Mother wasn't too thrilled with her choice of boyfriend.
Her daughter, on the other hand was worried sick. She started up a Find Him Facebook page.
There were lots of speculations throughout the book by Rose and indeed myself!
So many things happening that would certainly cause me to question myself, so I am not at all surprised how this made Rose do that same, if not more so.
The ending was an OMG moment, this has left me wondering if this really is going to be a standalone as its left me excited for me.
My thanks to Bookoutour via Net Galley for my copy.
Last Night is my first Kerry Wilkinson book and it looks like I have even more to add to my TBR list. A standalone psychological thriller that kept me up late reading because I couldn’t put it down. The opening was BAM IN YO’ FACE… with main character Rose waking up with blood all over her car and struggling to remember what has happened. Totally hooked me right off the bat!
Rose Denton and husband Dan have a pretty crappy marriage that is coming to an end. Their 18 year old daughter, Olivia, is dating an older loser (according to Rose) named Tyler. Tyler is missing and Rose wonders if her lack of memory and the blood in her car could have something to do with his disappearance.
The plot has many layers with lots of things to think about while reading. What happened to Rose before she woke up with blood in her car? What happened to Tyler? What happened to Rose and her friends when they were younger? And don’t forget her failing relationship with her husband, her strained relationship with her daughter, her poor job performance… The author was able to make all this work without coming across as overly complex. The balance was perfect and made for a very interesting, page-turning read.
I felt bad for Rose who was pretty sure (as was I) that she was being set up but by who and why? It is funny how our minds begin to work when we are unsure if we have done something wrong. Rose starts to act guilty…sneaking around the cops and doing Google searches on topics that would more than likely incriminate her if she was investigated. I was very impressed with the author’s ability to floor me with a twisty surprise at the end of almost every chapter. Not to mention the ending!! I had my list of possibilities of what was happening and once again I was WRONG!! Oh well, I like books with a major WTH?? at the end and Last Night by Kerry Wilkinson did just that!
5 out of 5 stars! I highly recommend to those who love twisting and turning psychological thrillers. Kerry Wilkinson is another name to add to my favorite author list. Thank you to the author and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of this book to review.
I really want to shout and scream from the rooftops about how much of a humdinger this psychological thriller is from Kerry Wilkinson, Last Night is an absolutely freaking amazing read.
The opening of Last Night, is the first puzzle to try and crack, Rose has had an accident found herself in a field, with blood on the windscreen of her car, no sign of an injured or dead animal, where has the blood come from has she knocked someone down. The actual feel of this intense beginning of the book, launches you head long into a scenario which no-one would like to be party to, trying to decipher what exactly she did Last Night.
To top it all off when Rose returns home, it becomes apparent that something else has occurred, her daughter Olivia’s boyfriend, Tyler has disappeared, taken off after an argument which Rose was involved in, is she to blame. Rose tries to unravel everything that the Last Night is hiding from her.
The glimpses into Rose’s past offers up a hidden secret, which she is unwillingly to confront or acknowledge, is everything that’s happening to her part of her past coming back to haunt her or is it something else. Is someone playing Rose or is she losing her mind……..
Kerry takes us down the route that Rose is an unreliable narrator, hard to fathom if she is showing us everything, do we take her at face value or is she hiding behind a façade. The characteristic of Rose is gradually revealed, leaving me with the insatiable feeling of a slow burning character, but with an impact at the end that floored my imagination.
Last Night is a book which left me with an unquenchable thirst, a wanting of more, Kerry always manages to fulfil all my desires in his writing prowse, I can’t help the feeling of intensity which Kerry produced in my imagination, an explosive reaction starting from that slow burn.
Thanks to Kerry Wilkinson, Bookouture and Noelle Holten for an advanced readers copy of Last Night, thoroughly enjoyed and easily recommended. If you want a psychological thriller which gradually builds to a dramatic conclusion, then Last Night is for you.
I have read a few books by Kerry Wilkinson and I am totally hooked to his writing. This book just made me like his works even more. Honestly, if you are yet to read Kerry’s books then you are definitely missing out.
Last Night begins with a dramatic scene. Rose wakes up in her car. She is in a field with no idea about how she got there. To make matters worse, there is blood on her windscreen which she can’t explain. I immediately wondered what I would have done in the same situation. Would have I gone to the police or driven home hoping to forget the incident. Tough choice! This was exactly Rose’s predicament. She needed answers fast but unfortunately, her mind was blank and someone else was working hard to ensure that it stayed that way.
I enjoyed this suspenseful read with all its twists. There were instances when things happened outside the main storyline and I feared that Kerry was deviating a bit. However, it turns out that everything that happened was meaningful and I loved how the author brilliantly connected it all in the end making this quite a suspenseful, captivating read from start to finish.
Last Night was an entertaining read. I loved how the book tackled different themes such as marriage and family dynamics intertwined with the ongoing mystery surrounding Rose. This was a fast-paced, unpredictable, addictive read which I definitely recommend.
Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via Netgalley and for letting me take part in this tour.
The blurb is quite disturbing in an intriguing way and the opening of the book is the same. It's the early hours of the morning and Rose Denton is in her car, everything is where it should be except, there's blood on the windscreen. Rose has no idea where she is, how she got there or, more importantly, who's blood is on her windscreen.
Rose's life is falling apart around her. Her and her husband are going through the motions but it's obvious that there's nothing between them anymore. She often fights with her daughter Olivia especially about her boyfriend Tyler and then there's Jason.
This is the first book I have read by Kerry and he does an excellent job of building the suspense and mystery. By the end of the book poor Rose is losing her mind. She suspects nearly everyone in her life is playing a trick on her and she has no idea who to trust. In all honesty nor did I. Nothing seemed to make sense and that was the point. When it came to the big reveal I was shocked. I didn't see it coming but it was oh so good.
I thoroughly enjoyed this twisty turny ride that Kerry took me on. I have a few of Kerry's books on my TBR pile and I am looking forward to another one in the near future.
